Over 5,000 Attend East Coast Zone National Science Week Carnival 2025
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said MSN served as a key platform to spark interest, raise awareness and strengthen the country's talent ecosystem in the field of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).
'In facing the wave of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation and the green economy, Malaysia cannot remain merely as consumers. We need to produce creators and leaders.
'MOSTI (the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry) is committed to building local talent inclusively and continuously so that the country is not only prepared but also capable of leading future technological and economic transformations,' he said at the opening ceremony of the carnival today.
Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar officiated the opening of the carnival.
Chang said each activity held at the MSN Carnival was aimed at ensuring that Malaysia would be able to lead future technological and economic transformation by involving various stakeholders, including school students, university students, teachers, researchers, industry players and the public.
He said the programme also complemented the existing school curriculum by incorporating hands-on and interactive co-curricular activities involving experts in STI.
MOSTI would continue to strengthen the implementation of MSN through an inclusive approach to ensure the public could fully benefit from science and technology through activities such as an interactive Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) exhibition, quizzes, workshops and a career fair, said Chang.
'I believe the MSN Carnival can not only spark interest in science among the younger generation but also bridge the STI gap through the involvement of various stakeholders, including educational institutions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the community,' he said.

New AI polytechnic in Lumut to strengthen Malaysia's TVET sector
MELAKA: A new polytechnic dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) will be established in Lumut, Perak, as part of Malaysia's push to strengthen its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system in line with Industry 4.0 advancements. Polytechnic and Community College Education Department director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Zahari Ismail confirmed the project has received government approval. Construction is set to begin under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) next year. 'Once the polytechnic and its programmes are approved, we will begin campus planning, curriculum design and instructor recruitment.' The institution aims to boost graduate employability in technology-driven industries, particularly as demand for AI expertise grows. Specialised certificate and diploma programmes in AI will be offered to address the rising need for skilled talent in digital and smart technology sectors. Currently, over 10 IT and computer science programmes in polytechnics and community colleges nationwide include AI components. These cover machine learning, data analysis, and introductory AI. 'This initiative will continue to expand across disciplines.' 'All students, regardless of their main field of study, will be required to take AI courses,' Mohd Zahari said. He added that integrating AI with fields like the Internet of Things (IoT), automation, and big data analytics aligns with national priorities in digital innovation. Mohd Zahari also highlighted that over 95% of TVET graduates from polytechnics and community colleges secure employment or pursue further studies. This reflects the system's success in producing job-ready talent. The Melaka convocation celebrated 569 graduates from the state's community colleges. Moflin by Casio Computer Co. demonstrates over 4 million distinctive personality traits, recognising the person who talks to it frequently as its owner. It gradually learns what the owner likes based on interactions such as petting and cuddling. "Development began with women as our target audience. We imagined a sidekick that could provide support even when you're facing issues at work or in your personal life," said Erina Ichikawa, 42, the leader of the team that developed Moflin. The project gained momentum after an engineer from the company brought in a prototype robot for the purpose of portraying the cuteness of small animals. Casio, which launched the robots in November, exceeded its target and sold over 7,000 units by March. They are particularly popular among women in their late 30s and 40s, according to the company. Ichikawa notes how some people also bring them on excursions on days off. "People can feel that their Moflins are different from other Moflins, as the robots, like animals, display individual personalities and emotions, on top of growing and having varying sleep cycles," Ichikawa said. 506 local products approved for MySTI logo as of July
TANJONG MALIM: A total of 506 products under the Use of Local R&D Products and Services Programme (MySTI) have been approved for the MySTI logo as of July, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang. Chang stated that products and services with the MySTI logo are now prioritised in government procurement since June 23, 2025. 'The implementation of MySTI is one of the Government's strategies to prepare the country towards achieving technological sovereignty and reducing dependence on foreign technology,' he said. Approved products are listed in the MySTI Inventory, accessible via 'Registration for logo application is currently free of charge,' Chang added during the closing of the Effectiveness Programme for Dengue Vector Control Strategy. Among those present were Boniface anak Edwin Manung, Secretary of MOSTI's Technology Transfer Division, and Associate Professor Dr Rahmat Dapari from Universiti Putra Malaysia. MOSTI also showcased the eco-friendly *Aedestech Mosquito Home System* (AMHS), developed by One Team Networks. The system was tested over 24 weeks from February to July. Chang noted that before AMHS implementation, the Ovitrap Index (OI) was 45% in intervention areas and 39% in control areas. By week 22, intervention areas saw a slight drop to 44%, while control areas surged to 62%. 'This shows intervention areas maintained mosquito control, unlike control areas, which saw a 24% increase without AMHS,' he said. The results align with WHO-recommended OI monitoring, proving AMHS reduces Aedes breeding. 'MOSTI supports local tech that tackles national issues like dengue.
