Businesses warned to adhere to by-laws or face might of the law
TMPD is calling on local business members to obey the law.
This comes after businesses in Eersterust, Mamelodi, and Doornpoort were inspected on Monday and Tuesday, revealing many by-law violations.
TMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, said the department, in collaboration with other stakeholders in the metro, conducted extensive operations on the two days.
He said, 'The main objective of these operations is to ensure compliance with the city by-laws.
'It was discovered that most of the businesses were operating contrary to their licenses, selling counterfeit, expired, and tampered food packaging products.'
This resulted in these businesses being issued with Section 56 notices, and the products being confiscated.
'Meanwhile, in Doornpoort, two well-known establishments were closed due to non-compliance,' he said, referring to businesses in the Doornpark shopping complex.
Mahamba added that the metro's building control department has discovered that certain residential properties are being extended without the metro's permission.
'Notices have been issued to the owners of these houses, giving them a 14-day period to respond to the violations,' he said.
He emphasised the importance of the owners becoming compliant within this prescribed time frame, to avoid further consequences.
He said, 'Failure to comply within the stated time frame will result in the municipality commencing the demolition process.'
'It is crucial for the owners to prompt action to avoid any further consequences.'
He closed by saying that TMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner YCR Faro, commended the members for their hard work and dedication to upholding the law.

Tshwane weekend operation nets 328 in Silverton and Garsfontein
In a bid to combat crime, the SAPS in Tshwane continued with its disruptive weekend crime operations in Silverton and Garsfontein policing precinct on July 12. The multidisciplinary operation was a planned intervention aimed at addressing crime in the Tshwane metro. It took place under the leadership of the District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine. Warrant Officer Marinda Austin said that the operation was a collaborative effort comprising law enforcement agencies, including SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and representatives of the local CPF. 'This combined effort resulted in the overall arrest of 328 suspects for criminal offences. These results are a direct outcome of planning, strategic deployments and heightened visibility aimed at reducing crime and continued track and tracing of wanted suspects,' said Austin. She said detective teams were responsible for more than 200 of the arrests made on Saturday night. 'The detectives were responsible for 234 arrests: 120 suspects were arrested for contact crime, which includes 1 for murder, 2 for attempted murder, 6 for armed robbery, 5 for common robbery, 19 for assault grievous bodily harm (GBH), 12 for assault for gender-based violence (GBV) under the Domestic Violence Act. Thirty-three people were arrested for common assault, 35 for common assault under the Domestic Violence Act, 6 for rape and 1 for sexual assault.' Austin said a roadblock with operational teams in the Silverton precinct resulted in the detention of 39 undocumented foreign nationals, who are now being processed by immigration authorities. 'During the operation, 967 individuals and 633 vehicles were searched.' Other arrests included 13 suspects for property-related crimes that included burglary at residences and theft out of and from motor vehicles, 18 people for driving under the influence of alcohol and 15 people for public drinking. Austin added that targeted patrols were conducted at 13 identified crime hotspots, leading to further arrests and the issuing of 21 534 fines of R17 200. Traffic enforcement units issued six Aarto infringement notices, totalling R3 750 in fines. Liquor compliance inspections were carried out at four establishments, and liquor was confiscated. Major-General Thine thanked all participating stakeholders for their continued co-operation and commitment to enhancing community safety. Two counterfeit syndicate members await bail hearing as case postponed
Three men allegedly involved in the printing and distribution of counterfeit South African rand and US dollar notes appeared in court recently. Two of them, Maxwell Basong (39) of Pretoria North and Tieze Zemeniouh (38) from Sunnyside, had their cases postponed to July 22/ Philliph Mumbai (42), also from Pretoria North, was granted R3 000 bail by the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on July 10. Mumbai is facing charges of possession of counterfeit goods and corruption, while the other two accused face charges of possession of counterfeit goods and being in the country illegally. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), it is alleged that the three operated a counterfeiting syndicate. This syndicate is said to be involved in the printing and distribution of counterfeit South African rand and US dollar notes. 'The counterfeit money was allegedly sold and used to purchase goods. On the afternoon of July 1, Philliph Mumbai exited an e-hailing service vehicle in Elardus Park, and was walking toward a nearby guesthouse when he was stopped by patrolling police officers,' said NPA regional spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana. Mahanjana said they questioned him about a printing machine he was carrying and asked where he was headed. 'When he could not answer, the police requested that he take them to the guesthouse. Upon arrival, they discovered Basong and Zemeniouh, operating a similar printing machine and printing counterfeit money. All three were arrested on the scene,' she explained. She said that during the arrest, Mumbai allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with R2 000 in exchange for their release. Mahanjana said during the bail proceedings, the state had decided not to oppose Mumbai's release, as he is legally in the country, has a confirmed residential address, and owns property. Mobile app to bring service delivery closer to residents
The metro has launched a mobile app designed to simplify service delivery reporting for residents. This innovative platform allows users to log service requests, track request progress, and receive real-time updates – all from their smartphones. MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Kholofelo Morodi, said the platform helps residents by cutting out red tape and long waiting times. He added that the city aims to bring services closer to the people it serves. She said that projections already indicate that the app will cut foot traffic to service centres by up to 40%, freeing up resources for infrastructure development and faster frontline delivery. According to Morodi, this initiative marks a clear break from the 'era of service delivery collapse' and unresponsive governance that plagued the city in recent years. She said, 'The Tshwane App is a ground-breaking mobile platform that places the power of local government directly into the hands of residents. 'This free and easy-to-use app empowers residents to bypass long queues, endless phone calls, and red tape.' The Tshwane App followed the launch of seven regional WhatsApp channels to provide residents with up-to-date information on service delivery issues.
