Thug Life FIRST Review Out: Kamal Haasan Film Is 'Poor, Disappointing'; Mani Ratnam Magic Missing
Thug Life Movie Review: Kamal Haasan performs well but film suffers from poor writing and outdated story.
Thug Life Review: Kamal Haasan's highly anticipated film, Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, is finally out in theatres. As the veteran actor's fans flock to cinema halls to catch the early shows, the first reviews of the film have started pouring in on social media sites like X, formerly known as Twitter.
One person wrote, 'Been an hour since I watched the UK premiere of #ThugLife. Poorly written, lack of character depth aplenty, no emotional connect with any of the titular roles, music in the movie was mehh. Should've just stayed at home and slept." Another post mentioned, 'Failed attempts, screenplay is too vague, Nayakan can happen only once. This is such a below-par work from both #KamalHaasan and #ManiRatnam, what the hell is Trisha's role, man, worst."

A fan review on the site read, 'No emotions, no proper writing for revenge and betray setup, only music and 2 action blocks were good." Someone else posted, 'Major disappointment! Couldn't even sit through the whole film." 'An emotionless, outdated gangster drama made worse by a forgettable soundtrack," another review read.
#ThugLife had potential but ends up Haasan delivers a solid performance, but his never-ending monologues wear you down. Simbu handles his part well, but even that can't rescue the sluggish, flat second half. The trademark Mani Ratnam spark? Nowhere to be found.… — MR . AK (@anandhumanoj666) June 5, 2025

#ThugLife I had nil expectations for the movie. Even then ended up huge disappointment. Very old 80s story that didn't have a gripping screenplay. Overdosage and wastage of star cast. Really bad.— Vikram Shankar (@vikramaxe) June 5, 2025
One person wrote, 'Just in awe of KH's acting throughout the movie and STR has delivered brilliantly too 🔥🔥, the young kid's expressions 🥹 and the entire cast has delivered!! ARR's music is a huge strength, but in some portions it felt a bit off… 2nd half suffers from poor writing!"
