Korea's InnoCORE Attracts Top Global Postdocs Through U.S. Job Fairs
Over 100 postdoctoral researchers from top global universities were interviewed, underscoring Korea's rising global research appeal. SEOUL, South Korea, June 30, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Korea has launched its first large-scale initiative to attract outstanding global researchers in science and technology through InnoCORE, a new fellowship program aimed at recruiting international talent in Artificial Intelligence and Science & Technology (AI+S&T). The Ministry of Science and ICT of the Republic of Korea, in collaboration with the country's four Institutes of Science and Technology (KAIST, GIST, DGIST, and UNIST), will invest KRW 300 billion (approximately USD 225 million) over the next five years to recruit and support 400 postdoctoral researchers in the interdisciplinary field of AI+S&T. As part of its global outreach efforts, InnoCORE hosted in-person job fairs in Boston (June 18, Northeastern University), New York (June 20, NYU-KAIST Global Campus), and Silicon Valley (June 23, KIC Silicon Valley). More than 100 postdoctoral researchers conducted face-to-face interviews with Korean research group leaders at these job fairs. The job fair not only attracted participants from local institutions—such as Harvard, MIT, NYU, Columbia, UC Berkeley, and Stanford—but also from other premier universities across the United States, including Cornell University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Florida. The strong turnout of students reflects a growing interest in Korea's evolving role as a global research hub. Professor Hee-Seung Lee, Research Group leader of the AI Co-Research & Education for Innovative Drug Institute at KAIST, noted: "We had the chance to meet highly capable and motivated researchers with a strong potential to lead groundbreaking work in AI+S&T and was able to hear firsthand their enthusiasm for such a unique opportunity. Korea's strategic efforts through InnoCORE are resonating internationally. If these talented researchers enter our network, it will not only elevate Korea's global scientific standing but also strengthen our global talent pipeline in the future." Dr. Hyojun Lim, a postdoctoral fellow at MIT who participated in the job fair, commented: "For U.S.-based researchers seeking career opportunities in Korea, InnoCORE provided a truly practical and insightful platform. Direct discussions with the lead professors of the research projects gave me a clear sense of each research group's mission and future direction—far beyond what a website or brochure can convey." Building on the success of these events, the Ministry of Science and ICT of the Republic of Korea will officially commence the selection and onboarding of fellows in July. Each selected postdoctoral researcher will be offered a competitive base annual salary of KRW 90 million (~USD 66,000), with opportunities for additional research funding and compensation available through partnerships with industry and academic institutions. Fellows will also have access to advanced research infrastructure, including supercomputers, semiconductor cleanrooms, and cutting-edge biomedical facilities. The program will also implement a multi-layered mentoring system involving academic advisors, industry experts, and international researchers—designed to strengthen both independent research and multinational cooperation capabilities. InnoCORE currently operates through eight interdisciplinary research clusters. The projects are run in collaboration with Korea's top, major industry leaders (Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Naver), and global research giants such as MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Oxford, Meta, Google, and IBM Research. Research areas include large language models (LLMs), generative AI, AI-based drug discovery, advanced manufacturing, aerospace AI, clean energy, and nanotechnology for brain disease diagnostics. In a proud moment for India, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will conduct a series of groundbreaking scientific experiments in space as part of an international mission. Speaking on Tuesday, Dr. Singh — Minister of State for Science & Technology and the PMO — said Shukla's involvement in this high-profile mission reflects India's growing stature in global space exploration. Captain Shukla will lead studies on physical, cognitive, and physiological responses in microgravity, including the effects of prolonged electronic display exposure — crucial for planning long-term space missions. He will also explore skeletal muscle dysfunction and test potential therapies to counter its impact. One of the most anticipated experiments involves extremophiles like Tardigrades, resilient organisms that can survive harsh space environments. These tests could offer insights into the possibility of life beyond Earth. Shukla is one of four astronauts selected for India's ambitious Gaganyaan mission, slated for launch in early 2027. With Japan in the rearview, Indian envoy to US Vinay Kwatra says nation eyes $30 trillion economy by 2047
Washington [US], June 3 (ANI): India's Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, highlighted the country's economic growth trajectory and its future goals, emphasising the importance of systemic stability for investors. 'You mentioned 4.1 trillion GDP that India touched recently. We now have Japan in our rearview. Prime Minister Modi has spoken about taking this to 5 trillion in the coming years, but the eventual goal which we are working towards is to take the Indian economy in the range of 28 to 35 trillion dollars by the year 2047, when we celebrate the centenary of our independence. When we talk of that, and if you position this in the perspective of an investor, for any investor, economic opportunity has to be one of the first drivers for a capital flow to happen. Suppose I'm a four trillion opportunity today looking to become 5, 10, and eventually 30-odd trillion opportunity; that whole journey is not enough in terms of numbers. In that case, it has to be combined with something which the investors truly value. First of all, I would say any investor would look for whether there is systemic stability in the economy, and whether there is systemic stability in the growth of the economy?' Kwatra said. He underlined that while India's GDP growth and economic potential attract investors, systemic stability in the economy and its growth is crucial to sustaining capital inflows. India recently crossed the $4.1 trillion GDP mark, overtaking Japan, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi aiming to achieve a $5 trillion economy soon. The visit was a follow-up to the Prime Minister's visit to the United States on February 13, during which both sides launched the India-U.S. COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century. Deputy National Security Advisor Pavan Kapoor was also part of the Indian delegation. According to MEA, at a luncheon meeting with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, both sides reviewed the full spectrum of the bilateral agenda. They underscored that Technology, Trade, and Talent would be the key pillars shaping the India-U.S. partnership in the 21st century. In meetings with Deputy Secretary of Defence Steve Feinberg and Under Secretary for Policy Elbridge Colby, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a robust and forward-looking defence partnership. Discussions focused on co-production and co-development initiatives, sustained joint military exercises, logistics and information-sharing frameworks, and enhancing interoperability between the armed forces, MEA said. Vikram Misri met with Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Michael Faulkender, the Foreign Secretary and discussed ways to deepen economic and financial ties, including collaboration in international financial institutions and coordination in the upcoming Financial Action Task Force (FATF) processes. In his meeting with Under Secretary of Commerce Jeffrey Kessler, both sides reviewed progress on the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement, cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, and the need to streamline ITAR and export control regulations. They agreed to convene the next meeting of the India-U.S. Strategic Trade Dialogue at the earliest opportunity, according to MEA. Consistent with the vision outlined in the COMPACT, detailed inter-agency discussions were also held on a range of strategic areas, including defence cooperation, energy security, the TRUST initiative, counter-terrorism, the Indian Ocean Strategic Venture, and collaboration through platforms such as the Quad, I2U2, and IMEEC.
