Reports on Nimisha Priya case inaccurate: Govt sources
Claims being made by a Kerala-based cleric about the case of Nimisha Priya, an Indian on death row in Yemen, are incorrect and any speculation on this sensitive matter should be avoided, government sources said on Wednesday. Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musaliyar, the Grand Mufti of India, claimed on Monday that Priya's death sentence has been overturned. "We urge people to avoid misinformation and speculation on the sensitive matter," one of the sources said. The clarification came after the Grand Mufti reportedly said the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of External Affairs are aware of his efforts in the Priya case. Live Events The 38-year-old Indian national's execution was scheduled for July 16, but it was postponed following the intervention of Indian officials. She is presently lodged in a jail in Sana'a, the Yemeni capital city that is under the control of Iran-backed Houthis. The nurse, hailing from Kollengode in Kerala's Palakkad district, has been found guilty of murdering a Yemeni citizen in July 2017. In 2020, a Yemeni court handed her the death sentence and the country's Supreme Judicial Council dismissed her appeal in November 2023. The MEA on July 17 said it is in touch with Yemeni authorities as well as certain friendly nations as part of efforts to reach a "mutually agreeable solution" in the case relating to Priya. India does not have any diplomatic presence in Yemen and diplomats in the Indian mission in Saudi Arabia were looking into the matter, it is learnt.

India set to become 2nd-best represented nation in Times Higher Education rankings
India is set to break new records and become the second-best represented nation in the world, behind only the US, in the 2026 edition of Times Higher Education ranking, according to Times Higher Education's Chief Global Affairs Officer Phil Baty . The comments were made by Baty in a statement on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the new National Education Policy (NEP). The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings (re-launched for 2026 as the Sustainability Impact Ratings) assess universities' social and economic impact based on their contributions to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Universities are examined on their teaching, research, community outreach and the stewardship of their resources across hundreds of metrics based on all 17 of the UN SDGs. Live Events Baty noted that India's National Education Policy of 2020 was so pioneering and so bold that many said at its launch five years ago that it was simply too ambitious to succeed. "...but exactly five years since the NEP 2020 was formally launched, there is a growing body of independent evidence that, despite the dramatic disruption of the COVID pandemic, the bold vision is rapidly becoming a reality. "Certainly, regarding ambitions to improve higher education quality and to finally embrace the full internationalisation of Indian higher education, Times Higher Education's data is clear -- the plans are working," he said. In 2019, the year before NEP2020, India had 49 universities in the rankings - a share of around four per cent of all ranked universities. In the 2026 edition, India's representation will have almost tripled to 128 ranked universities, representing nearly six per cent of all ranked universities. "This remarkable achievement reflects a nation-wide commitment from Indian universities to collect better data, to step forward and subject themselves to global data benchmarking, to put themselves on the world stage alongside the top research universities worldwide -- and most importantly to be a visible and active part of the global academic community , where research collaboration and talent exchange can help them to thrive further. "And it is not just in representation where India is showing exceptional progress. There are improvements in quality too. So the data is clear that India's universities are increasingly rubbing shoulders with the world's global research elite. But based on an additional, very different set of performance metrics based on their social and economic impact, India's universities are also starting to really shine," he said.

'Has given a clean chit to Pakistan': Union Minister Pralhad Joshi criticises P Chidambaram for his remarks on Pahalgam attack
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Monday criticised former Home Minister P Chidambaram 's remarks on Operation Sindoor , a military action taken by India in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Joshi accused Chidambaram of giving a "clean chit" to Pakistan, suggesting that Chidambaram 's comments could embolden Pakistan's stance on terrorism. The same people, when they were in power, used to say that there is no hand of Pakistan. The former Home Minister and former Finance Minister should realise that such statements embolden Pakistan's stand," said Joshi. On April 22, terrorists attacked a group of tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir , killing 26 people. India launched Operation Sindoor in response, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Chidambaram questioned the government's narrative on the attack, suggesting that the terrorists could be "homegrown" and asking for evidence to prove they came from Pakistan. He also criticised the government for not disclosing details about Operation Sindoor. Live Events In a July 27 interview with the Quint news outlet, Chidambaram raised questions on whether the Government had taken any follow-up steps to prevent another Pahalgam. "Where are the terrorist attackers? Why have you not apprehended them? Why have you not even identified them? Suddenly, a news item emerges that we have arrested two or three people who gave them shelter. Now what happened to that?" Chidambaram asked. Further, the Congress leader who served as the Home Minister in the UPA tenure said, the Government was "unwilling to disclose what the NIA has done all these weeks. Have they identified the terrorists, and where did they come from? I mean, for all we know, they could be homegrown terrorists. Why do you assume that they came from Pakistan? There's no evidence of that. They are also hiding the losses."
