Italy script history, qualify for T20 World Cup 2026; Netherlands earn a spot as well
The Hague [Netherlands], July 11 (ANI): Italy made history after securing qualification for the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, despite losing to the Netherlands at The Hague on Friday. Italy will mark their first appearance in next year's marquee event. Along with Italy, the Netherlands booked their berth in the tournament after gunning a 135-run target with consummate ease to complete a nine-wicket triumph. The final day of the Europe Qualifiers for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup turned into a roller coaster ride. All four sides, Italy, Netherlands, Scotland and Jersey had an opportunity to confirm their presence in the tournament. Scotland, who have featured in the last four editions of the tournament, hoped to qualify, but their hopes ended on a bitter note after a last-ball defeat against Jersey earlier on Friday. In a must-win battle, Jersey crossed the line on the final delivery of the game and pulled off a stunning win by chasing a 134-run target. Even after pulling off a one-wicket heist, Jersey, who were level with Italy on five points, were knocked out of the race due to Italy's superior net run rate. Italy needed to avoid a heavy defeat, which they managed by stretching their defence from 134/7 to 16.2 overs. After opting to bat, Italy lost their opening pair, Justin Mosca and Emilio Gay, within the first three overs. Italy captain Joe Burns hammered 22 before falling in the seventh over, which reduced them to 41/3. Wicketkeeper-batter Marcus Campopiano's cheap dismissal added to Italy's woes as they tottered on 46/4 in the ninth over. Benjamin Manenti's 27-ball 30 and Grant Stewart's 25(16) helped Italy garner 33 runs in the last three overs, which propelled them to 134/7. In reply, the Netherlands were quick off the blocks and hammered 66/0 in the powerplay. Michael Levitt and Max O'Dowd's 81-run opening stand ended in the eighth over. Crishan Kalugamage removed Levitt's stay on 34(25), but the Dutch side quickly rebounded after captain Scott Edwards forged an unbeaten 64-run stand for the second wicket to see the Netherlands home. As of now, 15 teams have qualified for the T20 World Cup next year. The Asia EAP qualifier will see three more sides feature in the competition, while two further teams will make it through from the Africa qualifier. India eye maiden women's T20I series victory over England
LONDON: Riding a wave of momentum, India will look to secure their maiden women's T20I series triumph over England when they lock horns with the hosts in the third game of a five-match series here on Friday. Harmanpreet Kaur and been in red-hot form, having handed England a record-shattering 97-run defeat in the series-opener before sealing a 24-run win in Bristol, England women's first-ever T20I loss at the venue, to take a commanding 2-0 lead. In 2006, India had beaten England in a lone match played in Derby. Since then, the Women in Blue have fallen short in every women's T20I series against England, both at home and away. This dominant performance comes as a timely boost for India as they continue to adapt to English conditions, a crucial exercise in the build-up to next year's ICC Women's T20 World Cup to be held in England. So far, the Indian unit has functioned like a well-oiled machine. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, who scored a century, and Harleen Deol were instrumental with the bat in the opener. In the second match, Amanjot Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues rescued the visitors from a precarious position with vital half-centuries, propelling India to a formidable total. However, the spotlight now turns to big-hitting opener Shafali Verma, who will be eager to make a statement. Back in the squad, Shafali has struggled to get going with scores of 20 and 3 in the series. She will be desperate for a defining innings. Skipper Kaur, who missed the opener as a precautionary measure following a head injury sustained during a warm-up match, will also look to spend some time in the middle after her two-ball stay in the second match. The Indian bowling attack has stepped up admirably in the absence of pace spearheads Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar. Left-arm spinner Sree Charani has emerged as the breakout star in her debut series. The 20-year-old leads the wicket charts with six scalps and also has the best economy rate in the series -- a frugal 5.11. For the hosts, one of main issues has been the inability of openers Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt-Hodge to provide a solid start. While Dunkley has enjoyed some good beginnings, Wyatt-Hodge has made a total of 18 runs across five innings this summer, including three successive ducks. Their bowling too has been sub par. Cricketing action returns to iconic venue in Pakistan's five-T20I series
The series, designed as vital preparation ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2026, will feature two matches in Faisalabad and three in Lahore. The historic Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad, having seen 24 Tests and 16 ODIs between 1978 and 2008, last hosted an international match in April 2008, and will be the venue for the first two T20Is. Initially scheduled as a three-ODI and three-T20I series under the Future Tours Programme (FTP), the tour has been revised to include five T20Is. Both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) agreed to swap the ODIs for additional T20Is in order to better align with their preparations for next year's marquee ICC event.
