Boy's quick thinking saves family stranded on Lake Lansing

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — An 11-year-old boy is being praised for calling 911, saying his family was stranded on a large inflatable raft on Lake Lansing. Deputies say it happened shortly after 1:40 p.m. on July 5, 2025. The boy told the Deputies that his mom, another adult, and two children were on the raft, and he was concerned because they couldn't reach shore and the raft was taking on water. Only one person was wearing a life vest. Marine Patrol assisted the Ingham County Sheriff's Office and thanked the 11-year-old for remaining calm and clear when he spoke to dispatchers about where he was and what he needed. Neenah teen convicted of reckless injury in apartment shooting that injured 2

A Neenah teen pleaded no contest June 30 to charges in connection with a November 2024 shooting that injured two people at a Neenah apartment. Anthony Hendricks, 18, pleaded no contest to one count of second-degree reckless injury and one count of maintaining a drug trafficking place, as party to a crime. Three other felony charges — aggravated battery, possession with intent to deliver THC, and an additional count of second-degree reckless injury — and one misdemeanor charge of resisting or obstructing an officer were dismissed. Investigators say on the evening of Nov. 29, 2024, Hendricks, then 17 years old, fired a gun at an around-18-year-old man during an altercation at Hendricks' family's apartment, striking both the man and Hendricks' 11-year-old brother. A no contest plea means Hendricks accepts a guilty verdict without admitting or denying any guilt. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 8 in Winnebago County Circuit Court. The following information is from a criminal complaint and and testimony of investigators at Hendrick's preliminary hearing in January: Around 7:15 p.m. Nov. 29, police were dispatched to an apartment at 130 W. Bell St. in Neenah for reports of gunshots and a gunshot victim. Outside, on the north side of the apartment building, officers found the around-18-year-old victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his leg area. Inside the apartment where the shooting took place, officers found the injured 11-year-old. Both gunshot victims were transported to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah and received treatment for their injuries. Through interviews and review of surveillance camera footage, investigators learned multiple people had been in and out of the apartment that evening, including multiple children. In an interview from the hospital after the shooting, the around-18-year-old gunshot victim told investigators he got into an altercation in the apartment unit earlier in the day, with a 15-year-old boy who pulled an AR-style rifle on him. Surveillance video showed the 15-year-old run out of the building before the shooting took place. A short time later, three males went to the apartment building and stood outside the locked exterior door. Audio from the external surveillance camera captured one of the males, identified as the older victim's brother, asking someone inside the building who pulled a gun on his brother. One of the other two males pulled out and racked a handgun, surveillance video and audio captured. A neighbor let the three males into the building, and they were later let into the apartment unit by someone inside. Surveillance camera did not capture what happened inside the apartment unit, but some time later, Hendricks' mother, Elizabeth Johnson, was seen walking the three males out of the building, then returning inside. As the three males got into a vehicle and were driving out of the parking lot, the surveillance audio captured the sound of three gunshots. The around-18-year-old gunshot told investigators he and others in the apartment wrestled a gun away from Hendricks, but then Hendricks retrieved another gun and shot him. In police interviews from the hospital, both Hendricks and Johnson said Hendricks fired a gun after a group of people pointed guns at Johnson. During a search of the apartment, investigators found between 4,000 and 4,500 grams of THC products, a Glock handgun inside a backpack, and a handgun under the mattress in a bedroom. Hendricks and the 15-year-old were arrested Dec. 4, at a motel in Grand Chute. The 15-year-old had a handgun on him, and investigators located an AR-style rifle in their motel room. In February, Johnson — Hendricks' mother — pleaded no contest to a felony count of maintaining a drug trafficking place, as party to a crime. She was sentenced to three years of probation. Lamell Matthews, 18, of Appleton, is charged with harboring or aiding a felon in connection with the shooting. According to the criminal complaint, Matthews was seen on surveillance video leaving the apartment after the shooting while appearing to conceal something in a large blanket. Days later, officers located a blanket matching the description of the one Matthews carried in a nearby yard, but did not find any evidence with it. When questioned about the blanket, Matthews told investigators he was moving drugs that belonged to him, not firearms. Matthews has a plea and sentencing hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. July 10. Although Hendricks was not yet an adult at the time of the shooting, 17-year-olds in Wisconsin are automatically charged as adults. For second-degree reckless injury, Hendricks faces up to 7½ years in prison and five years of extended supervision. For maintaining a drug trafficking place, Hendricks faces a maximum of one year and six months in prison and up to two years of extended supervision. ‘High-risk' traffic stop in Hamilton results in arrest of 11-year-old and 15-year-old boys

Hamilton police arrested an 11-year-old and a 15-year-old boy following a 'high-risk' stop on Monday afternoon in connection with a stolen vehicle investigation. Police in Niagara Region received a report of a break-in and the theft of a white 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and a white 2015 Jeep Cherokee Monday morning. They said the suspects made a forced entry into a detached garage and stole the keys to the vehicles. Hamilton police said they later got several calls about a stolen Jeep Cherokee driving erratically near Barton Street East and Gage Avenue North. 'Additional reports described suspicious behaviour at a local gas station and Eastgate Square Mall, where two youths were seen attempting to access the vehicle's gas tank and carrying what appeared to be a BB-style handgun,' police said. Officers were able to track the Jeep by mid-afternoon and conducted a 'high-risk' stop near Kentley Drive and Nash Road. The 11-year-old and 15-year-old suspects were subsequently taken into custody without incident, police said. During a search of the vehicle, police found a small quantity of marijuana and an identification belonging to a third-party victim believed to have been stolen earlier that day. The 11-year-old was released unconditionally to a parent due to his age, police said. The 15-year-old has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft over $5,000, theft under $5,000 and two counts of failure to comply with an undertaking. He remains in custody pending a court appearance.

Mom wants justice for son, cousin shot outside Everett apartment complex

The Brief An 11-year-old and a 17-year-old were shot in Everett, and the suspect is in custody. The shooting, believed to be gang-related, occurred during an alleged graffiti incident. Detectives are investigating the details, adding the suspect was arrested nearby and is known to police. EVERETT, Wash. - An 11-year-old is fighting for his life after a shooting in Everett and police believe they have the person who pulled the trigger in custody. A 17-year-old was also hit. Police say the suspect, a 20-year-old man, opened fire on the group, who were allegedly putting graffiti on the side of a building. It happened at an apartment complex in Everett off of 21st Drive Southeast on Monday night at around 6:30 p.m. The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office says the shooting appears to be gang-related because of the nature of the graffiti. The 17-year-old victim's mom says her son, TJ, told her he was going for a walk around the complex, as he did most nights, and five minutes later, he and a cousin had been shot. "We just arrived home from the store," said the mom of the 17-year-old. "They walked outside and said they were going to walk around the apartment complex like normal, and not even five minutes later we heard gunshots." The mom says the other boy who was shot in the head is also a family member. "The 11-year-old victim is my cousin," she said. She says the boys did not know the shooter, who was accused of pulling up on a scooter before opening fire. "He was on a moped, a motorized scooter…and him and my cousin tried to run and they were hit before they knew it," said the mom. She says the two collapsed near a building, which is covered in graffiti. "My son first thought he got hit in the head, because all he kept feeling was fire something was burning. My cousin, all I heard was him screaming for help," said the mom. The 11-year-old was flown to Harborview with critical injuries, her son was treated at Providence and released. "It penetrated through the bottom of the jaw out to the other side," said the mom of the 17-year-old. The sheriff's office says deputies arrested the accused shooter about two miles away near 37th Drive Southeast. "He took off on foot, threw the gun, said Renee Cooper, Snohomish County Sheriff's Office spokesperson. The sheriff's office says detectives initially believed the victims were in a group that was spray-painting graffiti on a building when the suspect approached. "Saw a group of teenagers graffiting on a building. There was believed to be a verbal altercation between the two, and he shot them," said Cooper. The 17-year-old victim's mom disputes any claims the boys were part of any spray-painting of graffiti, saying they were shot near the street, and then ran towards the graffitied area to escape. "We just want justice, that's it, we want him to get put away, they are innocent, they didn't do anything," said the mom. FOX 13 reached out to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday night for clarification based on the mom's statements. Spokesperson Courtney O'Keefe sent a statement back Tuesday night, saying, "Detectives are still working out the exact details of the altercation. However, we received reports of the graffiti occurring and when deputies arrived the paint was still wet, and it was crossing out one gang's name/sign and was writing over it with another gang sign." The sheriff's office says that the suspect was also known to law enforcement. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for assault.
