LPNM Unveils Innovative Pineapple-Based Products
JOHOR BAHRU, June 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) has developed 22 pineapple-based products in collaboration with local entrepreneurs between 2021 and 2024 as part of efforts to boost the country's downstream pineapple industry ahead of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). LPNM Product Development and Biotechnology Division director Elmie Adha Ismail said the board aims to develop 25 innovative products by the end of this year, in line with the 13MP's focus on innovation and empowering downstream industries. He said these innovative products include a variety of food and non-food items such as pineapple vinegar, pickles, energy drinks, livestock feed pellets, pineapple fibre threads, as well as various products made from pinapeat (dried pineapple residue). 'The development of downstream pineapple products is a joint effort and initiative by LPNM, researchers, and entrepreneurs to create products that are innovative, unique, creative, and competitive,' he told Bernama during an interview in conjunction with the National Pineapple Day here today. Elmie Adha noted that the division is currently conducting 18 research collaborations with research agencies until the end of the 12MP, focusing on set criteria such as marketability, industry suitability, and benefits to entrepreneurs. He said the prescribed criteria are aimed at ensuring the research delivers a significant impact to pineapple entrepreneurs, which can also be expanded along the industry value chain to allow them to generate higher income. According to Elmie Adha, the expansion of downstream pineapple products is also being driven through the division's transfer of technology, which has engaged over 1,000 participants nationwide. He said the initiative demonstrates the agricultural sector's capability to produce highly innovative and competitive products, redefining pineapple as more than just a fruit but a dynamic income-generating resource. On the National Pineapple Day event, he said the inaugural programme showcases 78 pineapple-based products, including 27 food items, 32 non-food products, 11 health-related items, and eight cosmetic and personal care products created from the fruit, leaves, stems, and agricultural waste.

Sarawak to continue ALAF project in phases to extend electricity supply to underserved communities

KOTA SAMARAHAN (June 28): The Additional or Late Applicant (ALAF) project will continue to be implemented in phases by the Sarawak government as part of its efforts to extend electricity supply to underserved communities, said State Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi. He said the initiative has received a total allocation of RM315 million for Phases 1 to 4, which are currently being carried out progressively. 'Under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the Sarawak government has also approved an allocation of RM550 million to continue implementing the ALAF programme in rural areas across the state in phases,' he told a press conference after the handover ceremony for Phase 8 of the Village Street Lighting (LJK) Project at Kampung Merdang Lumut here today. He explained that the implementation of ALAF is conducted on a rotational basis to ensure equitable distribution, especially for longhouses and villages located in remote and hard-to-reach areas. 'Sarawak is vast, and one of the main challenges lies in its topography, distance, terrain, and various other constraints which require coordination across multiple agencies,' he said. Julaihi also sought to clarify misconceptions held by certain quarters that Sarawak prioritises electricity exports, particularly to Kalimantan, over the needs of its own rural communities. 'Let us not be misled. Electricity exports to Kalimantan have been ongoing since 2016 and are not provided free of charge. Instead, they are sold at tariffs significantly higher than local rates. 'We support our neighbours, but our own people will always remain the priority. That is why ALAF is still ongoing and will continue to be implemented,' he stressed. He further disclosed that Sarawak will supply 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Sabah through a power exchange agreement, with the potential to increase the supply to 50MW or even 80MW, depending on grid stability. 'In addition, we have approved the allocation of no less than 1,000MW of electricity to Singapore via undersea cable, along with another approved supply allocation to Peninsular Malaysia, also not exceeding 1,000MW,' he added. He also revealed that there are plans to supply electricity to Brunei in the future. However, he assured that this will not compromise domestic demand. 'At present, Sarawak is capable of generating up to 5.8 gigawatts (GW) of electricity, compared to current demand of approximately 4.8GW. This leaves us with a sufficient energy reserve margin. Government reviews 13MP after thorough discussions, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: The government's decision to review the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) was not made hastily but followed detailed discussions over the past two weeks, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He explained that the process began with a draft presented by the Economy Ministry secretary-general to the Cabinet. 'We've actually discussed this. In my press conference a few weeks ago, I mentioned that the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) had issued a directive to review the draft presented by the Economy Ministry secretary-general,' Fahmi said during a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda (NANBA) programme. He emphasised that all policies and decisions must first undergo Cabinet scrutiny. Last Friday, ministries were instructed to study the draft and submit feedback. A special Cabinet meeting was then held to consolidate these inputs, leading to further refinements. Fahmi, who also serves as the MADANI government spokesman, noted that the review process revealed several areas requiring adjustments, prompting the Cabinet to assign Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah to oversee the Economy Ministry's functions. The decision comes after former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli questioned the review, calling it a rushed response to social media criticism. However, Fahmi reiterated that the move was procedural and aimed at ensuring the 13MP aligns with national priorities. The 13MP is set to be tabled in Parliament on July 31.
