Party success needs team effort- Johari Ghani
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani today called on party members to embrace a team-based approach, warning that relying on individuals alone will lead to failure. Johari, who is Titiwangsa Umno division chief, likened political strategy to a football match, that every 'player' must play their part effectively for the team to succeed. "We need to have a team mentality. If we do not base our efforts on a team, we won't get anywhere," he said at the division's delegates meeting today. Johari, who is also Titiwangsa member of Parliament, cited his experience in past general elections, noting that he lost in the 14th General Election despite being the deputy finance minister at the time, due to a weak team structure. "I lost by 4,000 votes because the team was not solid," he said. The plantation and commodities minister illustrated his point with an analogy involving a village football team that spent RM300 million to recruit Cristiano Ronaldo, only to find the star player ineffective because the rest of the team could not get the ball to him. Johari said success is only possible when each member of the team understands their role. In his speech, Johari also credited Barisan Nasional's win in Titiwangsa in the 15th General Election to four and a half years of careful preparation and the dedication of grassroots members including branch leaders, Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings. "We won during the worst tsunami in Umno's history, but Titiwangsa held firm because the team was solid," he said. He said that even the most prominent figures cannot win elections without a functioning support system. "Even with great strikers, if the team is not strong, this is what we will see," he said, referring to a former prime minister who lost his deposit in Langkawi despite his legacy. Looking ahead to the 16th General Election, Johari cautioned that dismantling the team concept would be detrimental, regardless of the candidate. Later, at a press conference, Johari said political success cannot rest on the shoulders of one individual alone, underscoring the importance of teamwork in any contest. "One person cannot win for the party. He cannot guarantee victory on his own," said Johari, adding that a strong team creates a better chance of winning. Meanwhile, acknowledging the diversity within political organisations, Johari said differing opinions and ideologies are common. "We must accept the reality that political parties are established to champion their respective ideologies," he said, citing Umno, DAP, PKR, Amanah and the various parties from Sabah and Sarawak as examples. He highlighted the challenge and the necessity of cooperation among ideologically distinct parties during elections and in forming a functional government post-victory. "The real question is how we organise our roles despite differing ideologies and once we win, how we unite to build a government that can drive national development." He said Malaysia's political landscape has changed significantly. "It's no longer like the past, where one party could dominate for up to 60 years. Now, we must learn the concept of power-sharing," he said.

Ahmad Zahid to leave decision on Hishammuddin's suspension to Umno's supreme council
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has deferred the decision regarding the Sembrong Umno Division's request to lift the six-year suspension of Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to the party's supreme council. Astro Awani reported that Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said the former Umno Vice President had yet to submit any appeal or apology. "Regarding the Sembrong Umno Division's motion, the statement from Johor Umno Liaison Committee Chairman, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, will bring this matter to the supreme council, so we will wait for the motion to be brought by him and reviewed by the Political Bureau. "The power to expel, suspend, or accept a member, if there is no General Assembly, lies with the supreme council of Umno. "Since there is no appeal letter from the applicant, we will look at the decision based on what is submitted by the Johor Mentri Besar," he told reporters after launching the Desa Kirana@KKDW programme at Sunway Putra Hotel on Thursday (June 26). Ahmad Zahid emphasised that the suspension of membership for several figures within the party was based on solid reasons, and the supreme council's decision at that time was deemed correct. He added that no disciplinary action is taken by the supreme council without reasonable cause. "I would like to mention that the suspension carried out was reasonable at the time because the supreme council would not expel or suspend any individual if there were no offences," he said. He also provided an example of how a leader allegedly poisoned the minds of 22 Umno Division Heads in Sabah to leave the party after the 14th General Election (PRU14), causing Umno to fall in the state. Ahmad Zahid also referred to an incident involving 10 Umno Members of Parliament who allegedly withdrew support for the government despite having signed a pledge to support the formation of the government. "Can the person who led 10 out of 30 Members of Parliament, who did not follow the party's decision, not be acted against? "Can the person who wanted the Umno President, who was the Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman before the formation of the government, to be dismissed, not be acted against," questioned Zahid. "I am not referring to any names, but those three cases are very reasonable for suspension or action to be taken. I am not referring to anyone, the media can think for themselves who that person is. "If that person asks what is my crime? That is the answer. The supreme council made the right decision at that time," explained Ahmad Zahid. On Saturday (June 21), the Sembrong Umno Division suggested that Hishammuddin's membership suspension be revoked, in line with the goal of strengthening the party at all levels ahead of the upcoming General Election. Hishammuddin was suspended from Umno membership for six years starting January 27, 2023, or two supreme council Umno election terms. The letter dated Jan 30, 2023, was signed by Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, who served as the Umno Secretary-General at the time.

Federal Court grants PKR leave to appeal in Zuraida's bond payment reduction case
PUTRAJAYA — The Federal Court here today granted Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leave to appeal against the appellate court's decision to reduce the bond payment owed by its former vice-president Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin (picture) from RM10 million to RM100,000 in a party bond breach case. The leave application was allowed by the Federal Court's three-panel judges comprising Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan, Datuk Nordin Hassan and Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, which is a prerequisite for matters proceeding to the Federal Court. The appeal will centre on a single question of law, which was amended by the bench during today's hearing. The question allowed to be argued in the substantive appeal is whether a party (A) to a financial bond, agrees to pay a certain sum of money as liquidated damages to (B) upon the happening of a certain event and; admits in a recital to such financial bond, that, the sum of money represented the value that (A) had received from (B), can have the court override such admission of fact and proceed to decide whether that sum constitutes reasonable compensation, taking into account the peculiar nature of the relationship between the parties. On Dec 11 last year, the appellate court three-man bench led by Judge Datuk See Mee Chun upheld the High Court's ruling that Zuraida had breached the bond but reduced the quantum payment from RM10 million to RM100,000. Previously, in Jun 23, 2023, the High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled in favour of PKR and ordered Zuraida, who is the former Ampang Member of Parliament, to pay RM10 million in accordance with the bond's terms. The presiding judge, Datuk Akhtar Tahir, held that the bond was a valid and binding contract. The lawsuit was initiated in 2020, by PKR's secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, on behalf of the party, claiming Zuraida had violated the terms of a bond she signed before contesting in the 14th General Election in 2018. Under the bond, among others, Zuraida was required to pay PKR RM10 million to the party within seven days if she resigned from PKR, joined another political party, or became an independent representative after being elected on the party's ticket. In her defence, Zuraida contended that she was forced to sign the bond with the party to be able to stand for election as a candidate in the general election under the PKR banner. In today's proceeding, PKR was represented by lawyers Ranjit Singh, William Leong, Navpreet Singh, Sakina Siraj, Chew Chun Man and Liew Hong Wei, while Zuraida was represented by counsels Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun, Nurul Najwa Zainuddin and Muhammad Firdaus Shaik Alauddin. — BERNAMA
