Fencer Ryan Choi has made history by winning Hong Kong, China's first-ever gold medal at the Fencing World Championships. Choi beat his opponent from Russia, Kirill Borodachev, 15-9 in the men's foil final in Tbilisi, Georgia. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law congratulated Choi on winning the gold medal. "Ryan made impressive performance in the competition, demonstrating Hong Kong athletes' charm and perseverance," she said in a statement. "I hope the Hong Kong China fencing team will continue to strive for excellence. I have faith in them to perform spectacularly again in the 15th National Games to be held in November."

Photo: RTHK The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism hopes the upcoming National Games can instil a sense of national identity among Hong Kong people and unite society. Speaking on RTHK's Overview Policy programme, Rosanna Law was also confident SAR athletes would perform well in front of a home crowd, noting they are strong at events staged here such as track cycling, fencing and rugby sevens. The 15th National Games, scheduled between November 9 and 21, will simultaneously take place in Macau and various Guangdong cities in a concerted effort. Apart from the above events, Hong Kong will also host competitions for golf, triathlon, beach volleyball, as well as men's handball and men's under-22 basketball, while bowling will be staged as a "mass participation" event. "With home court advantage, I hope we can achieve good results at the Games," Law said. "But also importantly, sport can instil a sense of national identity and cohesiveness in society. Our athletes will be competing against elite counterparts from different provinces, municipalities and special administrative regions." The minister believes the entire city will be fully committed to the event, with 18,000 or so volunteers recruited. "During the tournament, every TV station and media outlet will surely cover the Games, especially when it's the final with the gold medal on the line. Everyone will turn on their televisions to watch the event live," she said. Touching on other aspects of her work, Law said arrangements are being made to help local arts groups perform overseas as a demonstration of Hong Kong's soft power. The government is also constantly inviting overseas performers and exhibitors to visit the city, she added, so that they can learn about the SAR's unique culture.

Lawmaker urges more English-language TV, radio programming, two years after gov't cuts to required broadcast hours
A lawmaker has called on the government to ensure more English-language TV and radio programming, two years after the government relaxed rules for programming hours. At a legislative meeting on Wednesday, pro-Beijing lawmaker Starry Lee said Hong Kong needed to capitalise on its strengths and position as a international hub for high-calibre talent ahead of the upcoming 15th National Games and other international events. Lee, who heads the DAB party, urged the 'setting up of well-established English information channels for [the] demonstration of Hong Kong's cultural diversity, openness and inclusiveness…,' including a 24-hour RTHK English-language channel and the use of social media platforms. It comes two years after the required broadcast hours for English programming on English-language stations was reduced from 80 per cent to 55 per cent. Public consultation According to a written response by Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Bernard Chan, there are a total of five English-language TV channels and three radio channels in Hong Kong. 'These help exhibit Hong Kong's diversity and global vision, proactively telling good stories of the country and Hong Kong and enabling non-Chinese speaking persons in Hong Kong to have a better understanding of various information about Hong Kong and Mainland China,' Chan's response said. As for international talent, The Hong Kong Talent Engage (HKTE) provides them comprehensive support services aiding their integration into local society, he added: '[T]he HKTE's promotional and publicity materials, including its online platform, TV Announcements in the Public Interest, social media posts, etc, are already fully available in English, and its themed seminars on living in Hong Kong also offer online livestreaming and simultaneous interpretation services.' According to Chan, the Information Services Department and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will continue producing more English-Language social media content, including for promoting the upcoming National Games. In the third quarter of this year, the Office of the Communications Authority will launch a public consultation on the free-to-TV licence renewals.

65pc of National Games tickets to be for public sale A real-name registration system will be in place for ticket sales, which will be released in batches. Tickets for this year's National Games will be sold in phases, with at least 65 percent of seats at the various venues to be made available for public sale, according to event organisers. Guangdong sports bureau director Cui Jian said the Games in November, which will be co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau for the very first time, will adopt a single ticketing platform for all three regions. He said a real-name registration system will be in place for ticket sales, which will be released in batches. "Both domestic and international audiences can purchase tickets online by registering through the official ticketing website, mobile app and online official sales channels," Cui said. "Alternatively, tickets can be bought in person at authorised offline ticket agencies, service points or venue box offices. "The offline official ticketing agencies and service points will be strategically arranged in cities hosting the 15th National Games and the National Special Olympic Games, creating a ticket sales network that covers the entire country." Cui said the Games will be the largest ever in its history and that the total number of tickets sold is expected to approach or exceed that for the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2022. He said ticket prices are expected to be announced by September at the earliest. In response to the announcement, Kenny Shui, vice president of Our Hong Kong Foundation, said in a statement that he welcomes a unified ticketing platform as it would enhance purchasing efficiency and allow organisers to analyse data on purchasing trends, enabling better assessments of market demand and audience preferences. He also said the new model would standardise ticketing across Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, laying a foundation for a future ticket sales network in the Greater Bay Area.
