Former Ashley Youth Detention Centre employee charged over alleged rapes, abuse
A former employee of Tasmania's notorious Ashley Youth Detention Centre has been arrested over alleged serious sexual offences, including child sexual abuse, while he was working at the centre.
In a statement on Friday, Tasmania Police said a 64-year-old man would appear in court on June 11 to face charges of 11 counts of rape, three counts of indecent assault and two counts of indecency after an investigation by Taskforce Artemis.
Tasmania Police Commissioner Donna Adams said the charges against the man related to "three victim-survivors".
Police said the charges have "stemmed directly from matters that were investigated as a result of the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings".
"Some instances of abuse are alleged to have taken place between 1974 and 1982, while another instance of abuse is alleged to have occurred at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre between 1990 and 2021 while the man was an employee," the police statement said.
Police said Taskforce Artemis was a "specialist police team investigating child abuse allegations from the commission of inquiry".
"The taskforce is working closely with government agencies to share information, support victim-survivors, and hold alleged perpetrators to account through an intelligence-led approach.
