‘M3GAN 2.0' Is the Killer Sequel You've Been Waiting For—Here's How to Watch

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. She's back, and deadlier than ever. M3GAN 2.0, the highly anticipated sequel to 2022's viral horror hit, marks the return of the internet's favorite killer doll, complete with sharper instincts and a rival with a mission of her own. Directed once again by Gerard Johnstone, the sequel picks up two years after the original, with roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams) and her now-teenage niece Cady (Violet McGraw) navigating life after narrowly surviving M3GAN's first rampage. But a new government-backed AI weapon named AMELIA, played by Ivanna Sakhno, enters the picture—and it's not long before M3GAN is brought back to stop her. The film officially hits theaters today, bringing together returning cast members Amie Donald, Jenna Davis, Jen Van Epps, and Brian Jordan Alvarez, alongside newcomers Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp, and Jemaine Clement. The sequel also takes a satirical tone, focusing on our increasingly AI-reliant world. 'We shot this film three years ago and already technology has evolved so much,' Johnstone told 1News. 'The best thing about the movie is that it's part of the conversation about what's happening now and the more that happens the more there is to talk about. That's what's most exciting about getting to do one of these movies again.' Among the new faces, AMELIA clearly stands out. Sakhno, who plays the military-grade android, told The AU Review she approached the character as more than a villain: 'Although she is very much an artificial intelligence, I think there are certain aspects of her that people can resonate with, and I can only hope that people are able to find a little bit of compassion towards her. But I also feel open to them being scared for her, equally.' For now, M3GAN 2.0 is available only in theaters. As a Universal Pictures title, it is expected to eventually stream on Peacock, the studio's in-house streaming platform, although a date has not been confirmed. The original M3GAN, however, is available on Peacock. Audiences can experience all the chaos, choreography, and campy thrills of M3GAN 2.0 the old-fashioned way—on the big screen. Get Tickets

Almost 2000 pāua worth $25,000 seized in Wellington

Two men have been caught with a "huge haul" of illegally harvested pāua by Wellington fishery officers. The officers discovered 1863 pāua while inspecting the pairs vessel shortly after it landed at Titahi Bay on Tuesday afternoon. Fisheries New Zealand regional manager Phil Tasker said that the "huge haul" of pāua had already been shucked, and the two men would likely face charges under the Fisheries Act. "There is a maximum daily limit of five pāua per fisher in this area, which gives some context to the scale of this offending and the potential damage it could do to the pāua population," Tasker said. The estimated retail value of the pāua was $25,000. ADVERTISEMENT "Offending on this scale is incredibly disappointing to see. This fishery is a shared resource, and the rules are there to protect its sustainability for everyone." Wellington was recently found to be the worst place in the country for pāua poaching, with 30% of people checked breaking the law. Officers checking people on the coast find almost one in three is over the bag limit. (Source: 1News) Generally, one in 10 people checked nationwide were found to be over the limit with their pāua or undersized juveniles. Tasker had previously said sometimes "extreme amounts of pāua has been taken for commercial gain as a saleable commodity". "Most fishers go out there wanting to do the right thing and follow the rules." People could check the rules for their area by downloading the NZ Fishing Rules mobile app. "Our message for those who think they can steal this shared resource is that we will pursue offending, and there will be consequences," Tasker said. ADVERTISEMENT The public was asked to report illegal takes to the 0800 4 POACHER number (0800 47 62 24).

Drivers in fatal Manurewa chase known to each other, one charged

One person has been charged following a fatal car chase between two drivers known to one another in Auckland's Manurewa early this morning. A police vehicle was travelling along Roscommon Rd in Manurewa at about 1am after attending an unrelated incident. Officers observed a Mitsubishi vehicle pulling out of Sharland Rd, closely followed by an Isuzu. They were concerned the Mitsubishi was being chased by the Isuzu and signalled for the Isuzu to stop on Roscommon Rd. Moments after lights and sirens were turned on, the Isuzu made contact with the Mitsubishi, causing the vehicle to leave the road and collide with a tree, police said. ADVERTISEMENT Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Shanan Gray said officers immediately provided first aid, however the passenger of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. The morning's headlines in 90 seconds, including wild weather hitting the country, why a judge sided with Meta over AI, and North Korea's new tourist destination. (Source: 1News) In an update shortly before 1pm, Gray confirmed the drivers were known to one another. "The driver of the Mitsubishi vehicle remains in a critical condition at Middlemore Hospital, and was due to undergo surgery today," Gray said. Police have also spoken with a man taken into custody at the scene this morning. The 56-year-old man has been charged with driving dangerously causing death, dangerous driving causing injury and driving while forbidden. He would appear in Manukau District Court today. ADVERTISEMENT "Police inquiries will continue, and further charges cannot be ruled out as we investigate further," Gray said. A scene examination has been completed by the Serious Crash Unit and the road has since reopened. A critical incident investigation would continue to establish the full circumstances of what happened. "We would like to acknowledge the impact this event will have had on the community and our thoughts are with everyone involved." Witnesses were asked to contact police with information online, or by calling 105.

'Terrible idea': Finlayson weighs in on Ngāpuhi settlement proposal

Former Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson has called Shane Jones' proposal to force New Zealand's largest iwi Ngāpuhi into a single commercial settlement 'a terrible idea'. Jones confirmed yesterday that he was drafting a Members' Bill that would stop the Northland tribe from receiving multiple commercial redress packages with smaller groups. That's despite Ngāpuhi being made up of more than 100 individual hapū or subtribes. Ngāti Hine, a group affiliated to Ngāpuhi, has long challenged the idea of a single commercial settlement and would like to negotiate its own separate deal. Shane Jones (Source: 1News) ADVERTISEMENT Finlayson told 1News Ngāti Hine should be allowed to given how 'organised' and 'advanced' it was to enter negotiations. He said the Crown could adopt a similar settlement model to that Ngāti Kahungunu, the country's third largest iwi, which successfully negotiated multiple commercial deals. The official signing will be later today, former National minister Chris Finlayson saying the deal has been achieved in good time. (Source: Breakfast) That iwi's tribal territory stretches along the eastern coast of the North Island and was divided into seven 'natural groupings' according to geography and whakapapa. Each received their own commercial redress package. However, Finlayson said he did not agree with some suggestions that Ngāpuhi would receive the biggest settlement to date. He said Ngāpuhi did not experience 'raupatu' or 'land confiscation' to the same extent of other iwi like Waikato of Ngāi Tahu, who each settled for $170 million, ADVERTISEMENT He warned that if Ngāpuhi was to receive a quantum above that amount, it would dismantle the principle of 'relativity' among other settled iwi.

NZ First MP suddenly quits Parliament

NZ First MP Tanya Unkovich will resign from Parliament, 1News can reveal. It's understood the surprise decision was formalised this week after careful consideration and is set to be announced publicly later today. Unkovich entered Parliament as a new MP following the general election in 2023. According to her biography on the NZ First website, before entering politics she was self-employed and worked as a public speaker, having published several books as an international life and business coach. It's believed the MP's departure comes in part as a result of her coaching and consultancy work with a view to heading back to the private sector. ADVERTISEMENT She caused controversy early in her term after being linked to an anti-Covid vaccine channel, and has faced attacks after introducing NZ First's 'Fair Access to Bathrooms Bill'. The law would, if it had become law, required separate, unisex and single sex bathrooms. She later dropped that bill, introducing a bill to improve access to palliative care. In a statement, Unkovich said she had made the decision to resign after "careful consideration". "Serving in the public sector has been a great honour and a unique opportunity, for this I am grateful for the trust placed into me. "I do believe, however, I can personally be of more service to New Zealanders through various avenues in the private sector, as well as coaching and consultancy." She said it had always been her "deepest desire to serve mankind" and that she had been privileged to be a voice to many in the community. "I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the New Zealand First caucus, party members, and in particular the Rt Hon Winston Peters for his strong leadership and commitment towards a greater New Zealand." (Source: Supplied) ADVERTISEMENT In a post on her Instagram page today Unkovich said she had intended to travel to the US this Sunday to take part in a podcast with her publisher, however, due to 'situations worldwide' the decision was made to delay the trip. Unkovich is promoting the republishing of her book Grief to Greatness which aims to help readers rediscover joy after loss, grief and hardship. The MP has spoken publicly about her own struggles with eating issues and body dysmorphia when she was young, as well as the grief of losing her first husband to cancer at the age of 40. Replacement aims to be 'good parliamentarian' Replacing Unkovich in the NZ First list will be David Wilson, a former chief executive from Whangārei who's worked in various roles across economic and regional development. Speaking exclusively to 1News Wilson said he was preparing to make his way to the capital over the coming weeks to 'learn the rules' of Parliament. 'I want to be a good parliamentarian that works for the party's values and policies and put my head down and use what skills and experience I have to that end,' Wilson said. ADVERTISEMENT Wilson has stood as a candidate for NZ First in the past three general elections. Dr David Wilson becomes NZ First's new MP. (Source: Supplied) Now with Unkovich moving on the soon-to-be MP is excited for what's ahead. 'I'll have my head down over the next couple of weeks looking at all of the policies we're covering and getting an understanding of what's in front of us,' he said. He said Unkovich was leaving for 'legitimate' reasons and wished her well. 'Tanya is a lovely, lovely person,' he said. 'You know what it's like being a parliamentarian, it's not easy, and of course she has a very strong private career and so I wish her well.'
