"You just get in, race who's there on the day and get your hand to the wall first and to get my hand on the wall first is really exciting." Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh sets second swimming world record in three days

Summer McIntosh set a world record for the second time in three days at the Canadian swimming trials on Monday with the 18-year-old eclipsing Hungarian great Katinka Hosszu's 200m individual medley mark set 10 years ago. Three-times Olympic champion McIntosh, who set a world record in the 400m freestyle on Saturday, touched the wall in two minutes, 05.70 seconds to knock 0.42 off Hosszu's time from the 2015 world championships in Kazan. 'It's been one of those records that's always been in the back of my mind since trials two years ago,' said McIntosh, who won Olympic gold in the 200m butterfly and 200m, and 400m individual medley at the Paris Games. 'I've been knocking on the door on this one. I've just tried to chip away, chip away at it,' said McIntosh. 'To finally do it, it's kind of like 'Wow, I've finally got that done.'' McIntosh, who also won a 400m freestyle silver in Paris, has been in dominant form at Saanich Commonwealth Place, swimming the third-fastest women's 800m freestyle in history on Sunday. She said setting a new mark in the 200m individual medley was a confidence booster heading into the world championships in Singapore, which start next month. 'It's awesome and 200 IM I think is my main race out of my top five, six races where I really have to execute perfectly,' she added. There's no room for mistakes and it's kind of a sprint event for me. 'Overall, I'm really happy with that and it gives me a lot of confidence heading into Singapore,' added McIntosh, who also holds the 400 individual medley world record after setting a time of 4:24.38 at last year's trials.

Summer McIntosh breaks another world record, smashing decade-old 200m individual medley mark

Summer McIntosh made history for the second time in three days at the Canadian Swimming Trials on Monday, producing an inspired performance to break the 200-meter individual medley world record. In front of a sold-out crowd at Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria, the 18-year-old finished with a time of 2:05.70, breaking the previous record of 2:06.12 set by Hungary's Katinka Hosszú in 2015. 'It's been one of those records that's always been in the back of my mind since trials two years ago,' McIntosh, who won gold in the 200m individual medley at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, said afterwards. 'I've been knocking on the door on this one. I've just tried to chip away, chip away at it. To finally do it, it's kind of like: 'Wow, I've finally got that done.'' The 200m individual medley sees swimmers complete a 50m leg of all four stokes – butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle – in one race. McIntosh credited her record-breaking speed for a clean breaststroke leg which gave her a springboard to go for the mark. Her backstroke leg continued her rapid race, with her leg time of 30.80 being a second faster than when she set the Canadian record last year. 'Breaststroke has always been my weakest so getting through that 50, just trying to get to the wall and knowing that I'll be really strong in that last 50 because my freestyle has been great here so far. 'Overall, I'm really happy with that time and I always just trying to keep pushing forward, but I'll have to look over my splits to see where my breaststroke was but happy with it.' The achievement comes two days after McIntosh had smashed the 400m freestyle world record, trimming more than a second off the previous mark held by her longtime rival Ariarne Titmus, who beat the 18-year-old to the Olympic gold medal in the event at the 2024 Paris Games. She almost set another world record on Sunday, setting a new Canadian record in the 800m freestyle with 8:05.07. The time was the third-fastest ever and shaved almost five seconds off her own previous record, but McIntosh finished 0.95 seconds short of the world record Katie Ledecky set in May. She has a chance to continue her successful outing in the pool at the Canadian trials on Tuesday as she swims the 200m butterfly, which she says is her favorite race. Despite being an established figure on the swimming scene already, McIntosh exploded into the wider sporting conscience last year at the Paris Games where she won three golds and one silver. Her success was such that Time magazine called it the 'Summer of Summer.'

Canadian teenager McIntosh smashes 200m medley world record

Summer McIntosh smashed the decade-old world record in the women's 200m individual medley on Monday, touching the wall in 2:05.70 for her second record at the Canadian swimming trials. The 18-year-old eclipsed Hungarian Katinka Hosszu's mark of 2:06.12 set at the 2015 World Championships to become the first woman to duck under 2:06. It was triple Olympic gold medallist McIntosh's second world record of the meet following her 400m freestyle world record on Saturday. The gifted Canadian teenager had also impressed during Sunday's victory in the 800m freestyle, clocking the third-fastest time in history in an event not typically regarded as her strongest. Yet McIntosh showed no signs of fatigue with another dazzling performance to delight the crowd in British Columbia on Monday. "Overall really happy with that time and always just trying to keep pushing forward," McIntosh said after her record-breaking display. "It's awesome. 200 (individual medley) is my main race out of my top five or six races where I really have to execute perfectly. "There's no room for mistakes and it's kind of a sprint event for me, so I'm really happy with that. It gives me a lot of confidence heading into Singapore," added McIntosh, referring to next month's World Championships. Asked how she had prepared herself for Monday's effort after a gruelling weekend, she added: "Just recovering, sleeping as much as possible and eating a lot. "And also mentally calming myself down and taking it one race at a time. "I've had a lot of practice at that these past few years." McIntosh laid the foundations for her assault on the record with flawless opening sections in the butterfly and backstroke before an improved breaststroke — her weakest discipline — left her on world record pace. From there she turned on the afterburners in the closing freestyle to obliterate Hosszu's record. Mary-Sophie Harvey trailed in second at 2:08.78 with Ashley McMillan third at 2:12.08.
