KOTA MARUDU (July 6): The State Government will consider the proposal to upgrade the Matunggong Sub-District to a full district, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor. He said it is subject to a feasibility study by the relevant authorities. 'The government hears the aspirations of the people of Matunggong and will assess the needs and readiness of infrastructure before finalising any decision,' he said when officiating the 2025 Sabah Rungus Cultural Festival at the Sabah Rungus Cultural Centre here on Sunday. Hajiji called on the people to continue giving their strong support to the State Government led by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming State Election (PRN). 'Many efforts have been and are being carried out by the GRS Government for the well-being of the people and the development of Sabah. 'We have the clear Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan, which focuses on holistic development and the welfare of the people,' he said. He added that political stability and continued support from the people are vital to ensure that all government policies, programmes and initiatives can be carried out without disruption for the progress of the state and the well-being of all communities. 'Let us not take a step backward. Continue to stand with the GRS Government, which has proven its commitment and capability to protect the people and develop the state inclusively,' he stressed. Hajiji said the State Government is committed to preserving the rich cultural heritage of Sabah's ethnic communities, which are known for their unique and highly valued artistic traditions and customs. He said that efforts to safeguard the diverse cultures of various ethnic groups are crucial to ensure the state's identity continues to be protected and passed down to future generations. 'The State Government will continue to support and assist ethnic organisations in their efforts to preserve their customs, arts and cultural practices. 'Culture is not just a historical treasure but also a developmental asset that must be protected,' he said. According to him, ethnic culture and heritage, such as that of the Rungus community, are not just traditional values but are also vital assets for unity and tourism appeal. They also instill a sense of identity and pride among the younger generation. Hajiji also praised the United Rungus Organisation of Sabah for consistently organising the Rungus Cultural Festival as a platform to introduce and promote the culture of the Rungus ethnic group.
