The new Vauxhall electric Mokka GSE has some serious rally vibes… and it's closely related to speedy GTI
LAST month at Le Mans, Peugeot wheeled out an electric 208 GTI in front of tens of thousands of race fans. This week in a studio in Leighton Buzzard, Vauxhall unveiled the electric Mokka GSE in front of six people – and five of them work for Vauxhall. Or as spendy. But at least the coffee was free. The reason I'm telling you this is because GTI and GSE are very closely related. Different tracksuits. But the same go-faster pants underneath. READ MORE IN MOTORS Both are front-wheel drive with a 280hp e-motor and a limited-slip differential. So they'll be nippy and grippy. The regular Mokka Electric is 156hp. Both have specially-tuned suspension with a rear anti-roll bar for sharper handling. Both have beefy brakes. They'll need them. I reckon Vauxhall will try to keep prices a few quid below £37k to qualify for the Government's new electric car grant. We'll see. Sad day when I let it go. Now Peugeot Sport has got me all excited by revealing a box-fresh 208 GTI with lots of codes to its great grandpa. Like the classic red paint job, pepperpot wheels, red carpet and patterned sporty seats. It's electric, of course. But hear me out. It's 280hp with a limited-slip differential integrated into the gear reducer. It sits lower to hug the ground. The wheels are pushed out wider. It has specially-tuned suspension and a rear anti-roll bar. Michelin rubber. Beefy brakes. 5 Fans of the Pug 205 GTI will see echoes in the interior Credit: Peugeot 5 Peugeot's iconic hot hatch - the 205 GTI Top Gear Peugeot 208 Gti review Nothing will get past you on a B-road. The only snag is the price. About £38k–£39k I reckon. Have a goosey on and you'll see an original 205 GTI on there, albeit a 1.6 and not a 1.9, for half that price.
