Photo: St John A man has been charged with kidnapping after stealing an ambulance with a police officer and paramedic onboard in Invercargill. The ordeal happened after police were called to assist an ambulance crew dealing with an "agitated person" on Elles Road at 2.25am on Monday, police said. "While a police officer and an ambulance officer were speaking with a man in the back of the ambulance, he jumped into the driver's seat of the ambulance and allegedly began driving," a police spokesperson said. The ambulance travelled for about a block before the police officer was able to stop it. A 20-year-old Invercargill man was taken into custody and charged with two counts of kidnapping, driving while suspended, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, failing to stop and two counts of resisting police. "Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but there was a risk of serious injury to the people in that ambulance, none of whom were restrained, and a serious risk to the public," acting Southland Area Commander Inspector Matt Scoles said. An investigation into the kidnapping is ongoing.

An impaired driver who refused to stop has been detained by Dauphin RCMP after deploying a tire deflation device. RCMP said at approximately 6 a.m. on June 29, a report was received of a vehicle driving erratically on Highway 10. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to safely pull the vehicle over, though the driver refused to stop. RCMP said the vehicle was travelling at a 'high rate of speed' and nearly caused a collision with an oncoming vehicle. A tire deflation device was deployed, and upon stopping, the driver refused to exit the vehicle, prompting officers to extract the driver. A 20-year-old man from Yorkton, Sask. was arrested and faces several charges, including operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg, resisting a peace officer and driving carelessly. He was also charged with driving an unregistered vehicle and driving without motor vehicle liability insurance. None of the charges have been proven in court.

Ontario Provincial Police said they were told of a stolen vehicle from another jurisdiction within Wellington County on June 28. Police said the owner was able to track their vehicle using a GPS and Bluetooth tracking device they had left inside. With this, police were able to find the exact location of the vehicle. Officers found a 20-year-old man from Montreal and charged him with with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 in Canada, failure to comply with release order – other than to attend court, failure to comply with probation order, two counts of operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code.

Crews search for a man who drowned near Verdun Beach on June 7, 2025. (Maria Sarrouh/CTV News) The body of a young man who drowned at Verdun Beach earlier this month has been recovered, Montreal police confirmed. Police were called to the beach after the man was unaccounted after playing a sport in the St. Lawrence River on June 7. Search crews searched for him but could not find him. In an update Tuesday evening, a police spokesperson said last Saturday police were informed that a body was spotted in the river near Verchères, an off-island suburb of Montreal. The victim was a 20-year-old man. Police did not release any further details, adding that there was no evidence of the incident being criminal in nature. The case is being transferred to the coroner's office to determine the exact cause of death.

Charges laid after London man assaults police officer

A 20-year-old London man has been charged after assaulting a police officer and damaging property inside a convenience store. The suspect began damaging property inside a convenience store near Wellington and York Street on Tuesday at approximately 12:40 a.m. An employee reported the incident, and several officers arrived on the scene. As police approached the store, the suspect threw a can of beer in the officer's direction. There were no reported injuries. The suspect was arrested and charged with assault a peace officer with a weapon, theft under $5,000 and mischief over $5,000. Officers found that he had stolen and damaged property inside the store. A court date is scheduled on July 17 in relation to the charges.
