CPO Futures End Lower As Market Awaits Fresh Export, Production Data
By K. Naveen Prabu KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- The crude palm oil (CPO) futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives closed lower today, as traders turned cautious ahead of key export and production figures due next week. Fastmarkets Palm Oil Analytics senior analyst Dr Sathia Varqa said traders are likely awaiting new market leads, particularly for export and production data from July 1 to 20. 'The next major data release will be cargo surveyor estimates for exports and production figures from the Malaysian Palm Oil Association, which will provide clearer guidance for the market,' he told Bernama. He added the CPO market appeared stagnant today, with nearby-month contracts such as August to December showing little movement. 'The market seemed a little directionless today after two sessions of sharp swings. Prices traded on both sides earlier in the session but settled in negative territory by the close,' he said. At the close, the new spot-month August contract fell RM20 to RM4,138 per tonne, September 2025 contract declined RM18 to RM4,180 per tonne and October 2025 contract eased RM14 to RM4,210 per tonne. November 2025 slipped RM16 to RM4,217 per tonne, December 2025 dropped RM20 to RM4,213 per tonne while January 2026 contract shed RM27 to RM4,205 per tonne. Trading volume rose to 119,798 lots from 90,890 lots on Wednesday, while open interest increased to 232,699 contracts from 231,958 contracts previously.

Killing of P200 pay hike bill also kills bid for living wage in Philippines
MANILA: To have a basic but decent standard of living, a local think tank stressed the need for a P1,217 (US$21) living wage in Metro Manila, where most workers are compelled to make do with a minimum wage of P608 to P645. Outside Metro Manila, the minimum wage is also way lower than the P872 to P2,030 living wage, which Ibon Foundation computed based on the government's wage and inflation data. This was the reason that the proposed P100 or P200 wage hike would have been an important step toward a living wage, not only in Metro Manila but all over the Philippines, the think tank said. It pointed this out as 'minimum wage earners will feel immediate benefits and should be able to look forward to a living wage that actually raises their families' standard of living to a decent level.' But since the 19th Congress ended without the Senate and House of Representatives agreeing on how much the wage hike should be, workers will not have anything to expect, not even P50. The P100 wage hike proposal in the Senate was approved last year, Feb 19, while the House of Representatives approved its bill, proposing a P200 wage hike, on June 5. It would have been the first legislated wage hike since 1989, when the Wage Rationalization Act was signed and created the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards. But Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero said House Bill No. 11376 and Senate Bill No. 2534 were not a priority of the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council. Last year, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., declining to certify the bills as urgent, asked the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards to initiate a review of minimum wages. The regional boards in Metro Manila, Cordillera Administrative Region and Mimaropa, among others, approved wage hikes, but only worth P35 to P40, effective last year. 'As pointed out by the government's economic managers, an across-the-board wage hike could have 'dangerous repercussions' on the economy, saying that it could lead to higher inflation, and even jobless rates. They stated on June 11, a few days after the House of Representatives approved its bill, that a P200 increase could raise inflation by two percentage points, while a P100 hike may lead to an increase of 0.7 percentage points. Likewise, they estimated that a P200 wage hike would lead to a 0.6 percentage points increase in joblessness, and a 0.2 percentage points increase if the wage hike is P200. This, as MSMEs, or micro, small and medium enterprises, which constitute over 90 per cent of all businesses, and who considerably depend on minimum wage workers, 'may struggle.' The proposed wage hike, they said, may lead, as well, to higher production costs, which could result in higher prices that may disproportionately affect low-income households. But for Ibon Foundation, the government can intervene if it is concerned about MSMEs that could not shell out an additional P2,000 to P4,000 for every worker a month. It said 'contrary to government misgivings and employer complaints, a P200 wage hike is feasible and takes up just a small portion of company profits: 11.1 percent for large; 9.1 per cent for medium, and 12.9 per cent for small businesses.' A wage hike of P200 would be 15 per cent of the profit of micro businesses. Ibon Foundation stressed that any large increase in minimum wage would bring 'substantial relief to wage earners and their families by increasing the households' purchasing power.' 'Wage hikes also help boost the informal economy, where workers spend their earnings, and overall they are a strong driver of economic activity and more inclusive growth,' it said. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

An 'embarrassment' and a ‘mess': Netball SA taken to task by parliament
The national netball body appeared in front of the portfolio committee just days after World Netball suspended NSA president Cecilia Molokwane. Netball South Africa (NSA) was raked through the coals on Tuesday by the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture, with members of parliament criticising the federation for not taking action against its president, Cecilia Molokwane, and for lengthy delays in releasing audited financial reports. The national netball body appeared in front of the portfolio committee for the first time, just days after World Netball suspended Molokwane. 'While we acknowledge the growth and achievements of netball in our country, we also emphasise the importance of good governance, principles and values,' said the portfolio committee chairperson, Joseph McGluwa. 'Unfortunately, netball is currently embroiled in controversy with its president suspended, pending a disciplinary hearing. In short, Netball South Africa is in a mess.' Though the details of Molokwane's suspension remained unclear, World Netball had reacted to complaints it had received from NSA members, and it was believed they revolved around Molokwane leading a 'cabal' which was blocking individuals from standing for positions at upcoming NSA elections. World Netball sent letters to Molokwane, the NSA board and the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) stating that she could not have any involvement in the sport for 14 days until a disciplinary process was completed. While NSA had not taken any action against Molokwane, she did not attend the meeting, and NSA vice-president Mami Diale introduced herself as the acting president. Financial concerns Meanwhile, the NSA executive spent much of its time in front of the portfolio committee addressing financial concerns, such as the delayed release of audited financial statements, which included R90 million the federation had received from government over three years to organise the 2023 Netball World Cup held in Cape Town. Grilled on its financial statements from 2023 and 2024, the NSA board was able to explain some of the expenditure but was not able to provide specific details, including how R119,217 was spent on a 'social media influencer' and over R2-million was spent on 'consulting fees'. 'It's an embarrassment and an indictment on us as South Africans… and we are going to ensure accountability and transparency, especially in lieu of the fact that these are public funds,' said committee member Shameemah Salie. The NSA executive agreed to come back at a later stage to provide detailed explanations on its expenses in recent years. Head coach selection The netball body was also asked why it had appointed Jenny van Dyk as Proteas head coach last year ahead of black coaches who had also applied for the post. Van Dyk, a former head coach of the SA U-21 team and the Botswana national team, guided the Gauteng Jaguars to five successive titles in the Telkom Netball League between 2017 and 2021. 'We advertised the position and all coaches in this country had the opportunity to apply… but when it comes to coaching it's not always your CV that talks to you,' said Claudine Claassen, NSA director of demarcation and structures. 'You have to know the person can do the job, and we followed vigorous processes because we have set a goal to be one of the top teams in the world and to be on the podium at the 2027 World Cup.'
