Man hospitalized after Saturday morning shooting in Drexel
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – One man was hospitalized after being shot in the chest and the leg early Saturday morning in Drexel. According to Montgomery Regional Dispatch, the shooting happened in the 300 block of Lawncrest Ave. at approximately 12:45 a.m. In the 911 call obtained by 2 NEWS, the caller said the man was shot in the chest and leg. How do Israel and Iran tensions impact the U.S.?
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Tensions continue to rise after an Israeli attack that targeted Iran's nuclear program. This comes before President Trump was scheduled to hold peace talks between the two countries. 2 NEWS spoke with local experts on what this all means for U.S. security. Five things to know about Israel's attack on Iran There are still a lot more questions than answers after this strike, as both sides continue to warn the other about continued attacks and retaliatory attacks, but one Cedarville University professor says any harm coming to U.S. soil is still relatively low. 'Tensions have really been rising between the two, especially in recent years,' said Dr. Glen Duerr, Cedarville University professor of international studies. Israel and Iran have been exchanging strikes over the past 24 hours, all centered around Iran's growth in nuclear weaponry. 'It must be at a point where Mossad, the roughly equivalent of Israel's CIA, said that Iran is a danger,' said Duerr. 'They're getting to a breakout point, where they need to act.' Duerr says a lot escalated following the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. 'Especially after October 7, 2023, when Israel's territory was attacked, and notably, as well, Iran for the first time directly attacked Israel via drone in April and then again in October of 2024,' said Duerr. Concerns have been raised as to if the U.S. could see an attack of this scale, or even a cybersecurity attack — especially towards prominent military locations like Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. But Dr. Duerr doesn't see that happening. 'It's certainly possible, but not likely. I think the target is Israel, although the Israeli and American defense industries are very, very closely coordinated, including in this area around Wright-Patterson Air Force Base,' said Duerr. 'Certainly Iran could target the United States in terms of a cyberattack, but it's the timing doesn't make an awful lot of sense.' President Trump has attempted to hold peace talks between the two countries, but the outcomes of what could happen due to this conflict are endless. 'My sense is that we'll see this kind of lower level tension, some exchanges between the two continue with low intensity into the future until something that changes, whether it's Iran's nuclear weapons program being discontinued or, heaven forbid, something broader that happens in the Middle East as well,' said Duerr. Fire at Miami Township home under investigation
MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) — Firefighters were called Friday afternoon to a Miami Township neighborhood. Crews from the Miami Valley Fire District were dispatched to the area of Pinegrove and Silvercliff drives. Officials arrived to the location in reference to a reported structure fire. Sprinklers cause $200K in damage to MIX 107.7 after downtown fire Officials at the scene told our 2 NEWS crew at the scene that no one is believed to have been home at the time of the fire. Brookville man once again giving away dozens of bikes
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A local man is once again gearing up for a big giveaway for his community. Brookville resident Dave Nugent, better known as 'The Bicycle Man,' gives away hundreds of bikes throughout the year. Nugent repairs bikes of all sizes to give away, completely free to local children. Nugent is once again hosting a giveaway this month starting at 1 p.m. on June 15. Those interested can visit 142 June Place to pick up a bike. The giveaway will run until all bikes are given away. Nugent asks that people only take one bike per person. 2 NEWS has previously featured Nugent during our Tell Me Good News segments. Watch one of the clips in the video player above. 2 men charged in police pursuit, wrong-way crash on I-75
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Two people accused in the police pursuit that led to a 6-car, wrong-way crash on I-75 are now facing charges. Last Thursday, a pickup truck with four occupants inside was pursued by police as it sped through Dayton highways in the wrong direction. New dashcam footage shows just how large scale that pursuit was. New video shows wrong-way driver crashing into 5 cars on I-75 Cruiser video obtained from Perry Township law enforcement shows the 50-minute pursuit that led police from the outskirts of Dayton onto US-35 and then onto I-75. The pursuit started in Perry Township, as police began pursuing a GMC Sierra truck in the early evening hours of June 5. Dash camera footage features communication with a police helicopter overhead and the cruisers on the ground during the chase. Police deployed stop sticks, but the GMC drove right over them, reportedly refusing to stop for officers. The alleged driver has been identified as 46-year-old James Collins of Dayton. The chase continued across township roads until the truck entered US-35, driving in the wrong direction against traffic. That's when law enforcement noticed an occupant in the bed of the truck. 'Hey, there's actually somebody, in the bed of the pickup truck. White male, with gray shirt and black pants.' said one officer over the dashcam footage. 'Yeah, he's trying to dump boards, use caution guys, he's trying to dump boards on you.' That man, identified as 49-year-old Thomas Downey of Dayton, was dumping items onto the road in an attempt to stop law enforcement, including planks of wood. Dashcam confirms what officers have previously reported — the chase was stopped momentarily several times, both in the name of public safety, and to clean up the mess. Once the truck made its way onto I-75, driving south in the northbound lanes, it was just minutes before a multi-vehicle crash occurred. The truck collided with five other vehicles, leaving several other people injured. Four suspects fled the GMC truck, leading police on a short foot chase before they were all arrested and transported to the hospital. Both Collins and Downey are facing three charges, including fleeing and eluding, vehicular assault and obstructing official business.
