Princess Kate's French Fashion Outfits Have Harry and Meghan Link
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Princess Kate welcomed Emmanuel Macron to Britain wearing Dior and Givenchy—two French luxury fashion brands with a link to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Princess of Wales mostly wears British brands, but the arrival of the French president and his wife Brigitte Macron gave her an opportunity to branch out. Dior was at one stage rumored to have a partnership with Harry, while Meghan wore Givenchy on her wedding day. However, Kate's Givenchy look was by her own wedding dress designer Sarah Burton, who had previously been creative director of Alexander McQueen. Burton was at Alexander McQueen when she designed Kate's wedding dress for her fairy-tale ceremony at Westminster Abbey in 2011. In 2024, she moved to Givenchy. Meghan's wedding dress was designed by Clare Waight Keller, then at Givenchy but now at high street brand Uniqlo. Kate paired her dress with a lily of the valley embroidered clutch bag, earrings from Queen Elizabeth II's collection and the Lover's Knot tiara. Wearing Burton will have been easier for Kate while the designer was at famous British brand Alexander McQueen, but Macron's visit gave her the perfect justification to go back to one of her favorite designers. Princess Kate wore a red Givenchy evening gown with a cape alongside Prince William for the State Banquet at Windsor Castle for President Emmanuel Macron of France on July 8, 2025. Princess Kate wore a red Givenchy evening gown with a cape alongside Prince William for the State Banquet at Windsor Castle for President Emmanuel Macron of France on July 8, In Kate's case, the decision to wear both Givenchy and Dior on the same day on the one hand reflects a desire to signal to the French delegation a love of the country's fashion and culture. On the other, it highlights the fact she usually sticks to British brands to promote homegrown fashion from houses like Alexander McQueen, for example. Meanwhile, the fact Meghan wore Givenchy on her wedding day shows she felt less obliged to showcase British fashion, and the same goes for Harry who, had he kept to tradition, would have been expected to wear a bespoke suit from world famous London street Savile Row to the coronation. Harry's military uniform on his wedding day, for example, was made by famous Savile Row tailor Dege & Skinner, which has a history dating back to 1865 and has held a royal warrant since 1984, under both Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles. It was therefore a doubly risky move on Harry's part—he wore a French designer to the coronation of Britain's king and allowed Dior to promote his choice on social media, before heading straight to the airport immediately after the ceremony. Princess Catherine ‘saved' disastrous French state visit with French President Emmanuel Macron amid dazzling appearance at banquet
Princess Catherine has been praised by palace insiders for dramatically stepping up to 'save' Emmanuel Macron's state visit to the United Kingdom. President Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron arrived in the United Kingdom on Tuesday for the first state visit by a French president since Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008. King Charles, Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales all stepped out to mark the historic visit and show off Britain's soft power. Catherine joined her husband for the formal welcome for the French President and First Lady at the airport and wore a show-stopping blush pink 30 Montaigne Rose Des Vents Bar Jacket by Dior. The French luxury house has recently installed Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson as creative director, making Kate's choice of outfit a diplomatic choice. Unfortunately, the monarch was seen to be suffering from a noticeably bloodshot eye during the state visit, sparking unwelcome commentary about the 76-year-old's health. Meanwhile, the French First Lady was twice accused of 'snubbing' her husband during the visit just months after appearing to strike Emmanuel in the face. On Tuesday evening the Princess of Wales also attended a state banquet for the Macrons, which marked her first appearance at a banquet since her cancer treatment. According to a palace insider who spoke to The Daily Beast, courtiers were relieved to see the Princess of Wales attend the dinner. 'Kate has saved the day,' the source said. 'The only thing the newspapers will be reporting on (Wednesday) is her presence.' It is understood Catherine's attendance at the banquet was only confirmed shortly after 6 p.m. local time, about 90 minutes before she arrived at Windsor Castle with the Prince of Wales. Catherine entered the banquet hall in a dazzling caped red dress designed by Sarah Burton, her royal wedding dress designer, for Givenchy. The Princess of Wales coordinated the gown with the priceless Queen Mary's Lover's Knot Tiara. The French State visit is set to continue on Wednesday with the Macrons pencilled in to visit St George's Chapel to lay flowers on the tomb of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Dior diplomacy: Princess Catherine's French fashion statement
Colour-coded outfits and brooches are the usual tools for female members of the royal family to pay tribute to visiting nations, but for the first French state visit to the UK since 2008, the Princess of Wales relied on the power of a single label. Greeting French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte at RAF Northolt in north-west London, a 30-minute drive from Windsor Castle, Princess Catherine made her debut in French luxury label Dior. Catherine wore the pale pink 30 Montaigne Rose Des Vents Bar Jacket from one of Italian designer Maria Grazia Chiuri's last collections for the label before she was replaced by Northern Irishman Jonathan Anderson this year. Dior was a favourite label of Princess Margaret, who wore a dress from the label for her 21st birthday, and Catherine's mother-in-law Princess Diana, who carried the brand's Chouchou bag so frequently that in 1996 it was officially renamed the Lady Dior bag. Fittingly, Catherine wore Diana's Collingwood pearl-drop earrings beneath a matching pink hat with ribbon detail by Jess Collett, tilted with French insouciance. A pearl necklace from Queen Elizabeth's collection completed the pretty summer look. The French first lady was content to let her hosts take centre stage in an understated and appropriately chic tailored cream dress with gold accents. Queen Camilla wore an emerald green midi dress by Fiona Clare with a matching hat by Irish milliner Philip Treacy. At the state dinner held at Windsor Castle – as Buckingham Palace is being renovated – Catherine continued the dress diplomacy in a caped red gown by Sarah Burton, the British designer who made her debut as creative director of the French fashion house Givenchy in March. Burton famously designed Catherine's dress for her wedding to Prince William in 2011, while she was creative director at Alexander McQueen. Wearing the Lover's Knot Tiara with its 19 hanging pearls set in silver and gold, another favourite of Princess Diana's, Catherine's appearance at the dinner is another sign of her easing back into public life after her cancer diagnosis last year.

Kate to attend first state banquet in two years
Kate will join the King, the Queen, the Prince of Wales and some 160 guests at Windsor Castle for the white tie affair, the glittering highlight of the French state visit, on Tuesday evening. President of France Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte are being feted with the opulent display of royal hospitality in the historic St George's Hall. 🇫🇷🇬🇧 The King and Queen, and The Prince and Princess of Wales, have welcomed President @EmmanuelMacron and Mrs. Macron to Windsor Castle. Le Roi et la Reine, ainsi que le Prince et la Princesse de Galles viennent d'accueillir le Président @EmmanuelMacron et Madame Macron au… — The Royal Family (@RoyalFamily) July 8, 2025 Kate, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and confirmed she was free from the disease at the start of this year, last made an appearance at a grand royal dinner 20 months ago in November 2023, in honour of the South Korean president. Last week, she opened up about her 'rollercoaster' cancer recovery, its life-changing impact, and putting on a 'brave face' during a visit to Colchester Hospital. Kensington Palace confirmed the princess would be present after she carried out royal duties to mark the start of the state visit earlier in the day, accompanying the Macrons to Windsor with William, taking part in the carriage ride, the ceremonial welcome, the royal luncheon and Royal Collection exhibition. The princess has already channelled diplomatic royal dressing in honour of the King's guests, choosing to wear French fashion house Christian Dior for her daytime engagements. Her earrings belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales and the pearl necklace was from the late Queen's collection. The blush pink Christian Dior jacket is the 30 Montaigne Rose Des Vents Bar Jacket and a piece from the 2024 collection, and was paired with a tulle skirt. It was reimagined by Maria Grazia Chiuri, who was inspired by the original first created in 1947 by Dior himself. Kate's sleek hat was by Jess Collett. The princess was charmed with a kiss to the hand by Mr Macron as she and William met the French leader as he disembarked from his plane at RAF Northolt. Mr Macron took the princess's hand and leaned forward to deliver an air kiss towards it. Meanwhile, the President warmly shook the prince's hand and held onto his arm as they chatted. State banquets have moved from the Buckingham Palace ballroom to Windsor for the next few years while reservicing work at the London royal residence continues and starts to affect the state rooms. Kate has attended a handful of engagements in recent months including Trooping the Colour, the annual Order of the Garter service and a visit to a V&A storage facility in London. But she missed Royal Ascot in June after seeking to find the right balance to public appearances following her cancer treatment.
