Embattled Police Minister Mchunu gifted R20K phone, goat, and blanket in 2025 disclosures

A R20,000 cellphone and a goat, and a blanket valued at R2,350 were the only gifts embattled police minister Senzo Mchunu received. This was revealed in the 2025 Parliament's Register of Members' Interests. Listed under 'Gifts and Hospitality', Mchunu declared that he had received the phone from the Ambassador of the Republic of China and the goat and blanket from the community of Onyango in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal. The register is a public document that contains information about the financial and other interests of Members of Parliament (MPs). It attempts to increase openness, accountability, and public trust in the legislative process by requiring MPs to declare any conflicts between their public obligations and private interests. Mchunu is currently on special leave after KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi also alleged that he disbanded a task force that was set up to investigate political killings in the province. The African National Congress (ANC) veteran did not declare ownership of any companies, businesses, or partnerships. Mchunu also claimed that he is not a member of a business organisation, nor is being sponsored by any entity.

Afghans loiter at KLIA for four days

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) thwarted an attempt by four Afghan nationals, believed to be from a family, to enter Malaysia using fake visas. The agency said the four were among 132 foreigners who were checked during a monitoring and document screening operation at KLIA Terminal 1. It said the four individuals – a man and three women – were spotted wandering in the terminal area, which aroused the suspicion of the KLIA Terminal 1 monitoring unit personnel. 'The four were found to have arrived in Malaysia on July 24 at 9.20pm, but failed to report to the immigration counter within the specified time. 'It is learnt that they had been in the terminal area for four days without going through the immigration inspection process,' said the agency in a statement. AKPS said further checks on their travel documents revealed that the visas were fake. 'The fake visas were obtained through an agent for a fee of US$6,000 (RM25,350),' read the statement, Bernama reported. The agency refused entry (Not To Land) to the four individuals, who will be deported to their country of origin today.

Judge Suzana Hussin fixed the date after lawyer Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, representing Ismail and his former political secretary Datuk Mohammad Anuar Mohd Yunus as respondents, informed the court that more time was needed to review and respond to the application. The court also ordered the defence to file its affidavit in reply on or before Aug 13, while MACC must file a counter-affidavit on or before Sept 3. The proceedings were attended by Deputy Public Prosecutors Ifa Sirrhu Samsudin and Alis Izzati Azurin Rusdi, as well as lawyer Ragunath Kesavan, who also appeared for Ismail and Mohammad Anuar. MACC is seeking a court order to forfeit the seized funds from Mohammad Anuar to the Malaysian Government. On July 3, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said at a press conference that the anti-graft body would apply to the court to forfeit seized assets amounting to RM170 million. Previously, Ismail Sabri had been summoned several times to record statements with regard to the declaration of assets he made to the MACC. MACC had also seized RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies, as well as 16 kilogrammes of pure gold bars estimated to be worth RM7 million, in connection with the corruption and money laundering investigation involving the Bera MP. The seizure was made during raids on residences and offices believed to be used as 'safe houses' following investigations into four senior officers of Ismail Sabri who were arrested in February. - BERNAMA More Like This
