Oman table tennis players gear up for next tournaments
MUSCAT, JULY 2 The Oman national table tennis team players began an intensive domestic training camp at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat as part of their comprehensive preparations for several significant upcoming international and regional tournaments. The week-long internal camp, which began on Sunday, featured participation from both senior and youth players representing various clubs across the Sultanate of Oman, and is being held under the close supervision of the national technical staff. Led by national team head coach Omid Shamas Sharbabaki, alongside newly appointed assistant head coach Adnan Fawakherji, the camp will aim to deliver maximum technical and tactical outputs. The coaching duo are focused on building team cohesion, enhancing skill sets, and developing game strategies that align with the high standards of international competition. This camp will play a critical role in shaping the future of Omani table tennis not only by refining the skills of the current senior players but also by evaluating promising young talents who may soon earn the national jersey. The coaching staff will end the domestic training camp by finalising the lineup for the upcoming WTT Star Contender Muscat which is one of the prominent events on the global table tennis calendar. The prestigious tournament, scheduled to take place in mid-November in Muscat, will feature a lineup of world-class players and will offer Oman's athletes a golden opportunity to compete against international elites on home soil. Simultaneously, the youth segment of the national team is undergoing a performance evaluation during the camp, as part of the selection process for the 3rd Asian Youth Games, which will be held in Bahrain in October 2025. The technical staff is closely assessing the youth players' progress and adaptability to international standards, with the aim of forming a competitive squad that can represent Oman honorably in the continental multi-sport event. Adding to the busy calendar, Oman is also gearing up to host the Arabian and West Asian Table Tennis Championship for Clubs this coming September. The Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex will once again serve as the host venue for this prestigious regional championship. Oman will be represented by its top three clubs including Salalah, Ibri, and Seeb who were shown consistent performance domestically in the last season and earned the right to compete at this level. The tournament is expected to draw strong participation from top club teams across the Arab and West Asian region, promising high-level competition and great exposure for the local players. Following the conclusion of the current training phase, the national team's preparation will continue with another internal camp phase starting from July 17 to 24 in Muscat. This next stage of preparation will focus on refining techniques and strategies developed during the current camp. The coaching staff will aim to capitalise on the momentum, strengthen areas of improvement identified in previous evaluations, and ensure that both senior and youth squads are progressing in line with international expectations. This multi-phase training programme aim to provide a competitive generation of athletes capable of representing the country at major regional and global events.

IWF chief visits AYG Executive Committee Headquarter
International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) President Mr. Mohammed Jaloud Al Shammari paid an official visit to the headquarter of the Executive Committee of the 3rd Asian Youth Games, which will take place in the Kingdom of Bahrain from October 22 to 31. The meeting was attended by Mr. Eshaq Ebrahim Eshaq, member of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Olympic Committee and president of the Bahrain Weightlifting Federation. Mr. Al Shammari was received by chairman of the Executive Committee Mr. Yousif Duaij, along with the committee's vice-chairman, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Abdul Ghaffar, and several heads of standing committees. Mr. Duaij welcomed the IWF president and praised his efforts in promoting and developing weightlifting worldwide. He affirmed the committee's commitment to working closely with the IWF to ensure the successful organization of the weightlifting competition, which is among the key events on the Games' program. Discussions focused on coordinating all organizational and technical aspects of the tournament, including weight categories, the overall sports program, and regulations governing participation. The parties emphasized the importance of delivering a competition that meets the highest standards, especially as it serves as a qualifier for the Youth Olympic Games scheduled to be held in Dakar in 2026. Mr. Al Shammari expressed full confidence in Bahrain's ability to deliver an outstanding edition of the Asian Youth Games, citing its impressive facilities and organizational capabilities. He commended Bahrain's success in hosting the World Weightlifting Championships for the first time last year, which showcased the Kingdom's readiness to stage major international sporting events.

HH Shaikh Khalid chairs sixth BOC board meeting

He began by welcoming board members and praising the achievements of national sports federations in the first half of 2025. He also marked the 46th anniversary of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, highlighting its long track record of sporting success. The meeting approved the minutes of the previous session and the 2024 administrative report. It reviewed Bahrain's external sports participation plans for 2025–2026 and discussed preparations for hosting the 3rd Asian Youth Games, set for October 22–31. Shaikh Khalid also reviewed the Olympic Committee's plans for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, emphasizing athlete development and a focus on new sports to boost Bahrain's medal prospects. At the beginning of the meeting, HH Shaikh Khalid warmly welcomed the members and praised the achievements of Bahrain's sports federations during the first half of 2025. He also expressed pride in the 46-year journey of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, highlighting its many successes and contributions to sports in the Kingdom. During the session, several key topics were discussed. These included the approval of the minutes from the previous meeting, the administrative report for 2024, and updates on Bahrain's international sports participation plans for 2025 and 2026. Preparations for hosting the 3rd Asian Youth Games, scheduled to take place in Bahrain from October 22 to 31, 2025, were also reviewed. The meeting touched on the Committee's ongoing preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. HH Shaikh Khalid emphasized the importance of training athletes to compete at the highest level and focusing on new sports disciplines to increase Bahrain's chances of winning medals in future editions of the Games. Additionally, the members reviewed the latest developments regarding the establishment of an International Center of Excellence and a Regional Aquatic Sports Office, in collaboration with GFH Financial Group. They also reflected on Bahrain's successful hosting of the FIBA Congress and Hall of Fame Ceremony held last month. Progress updates from the Bahrain Olympic Academy were presented, and HH Shaikh Khalid tasked Shaikha Dr. Hessa bint Khalid Al Khalifa, Board Member and Chair of the Gender Equality Committee, with coordinating certified administrative programs with the International Olympic Academy. These initiatives aim to improve the skills of sports administrators in local clubs and federations. Other discussions included updates on the National Center for Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and proposed changes to the Olympic Committee's administrative structure. The Board was also briefed on Bahrain's preparations to host the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) meetings from November 10 to 14, 2025. Discussions were held on supporting Gulf candidates in international sports positions and the approval of the new logo for the GCC Sports Arbitration Authority. The meeting concluded with the endorsement of the 2024–2028 strategic plan of the Equality Committee, including its vision, mission, and core values. HH Shaikh Khalid wished the committee continued success in its future initiatives.
