Too early to judge Gill and his young India team, says Dev
NEW DELHI: Former India captain Kapil Dev on Saturday said it is too early to judge new Test skipper Shubman Gill and his young team in England despite two defeats. Gill, 25, took over a team in transition after the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ahead of the five-Test tour of England. The visitors, who trail the series 2-1, lost the opener before they bounced back to level the series. They then went down in a closely-fought third Test at Lord's. Ben Stokes' England are in the box seat in the fourth Test and in sight of clinching the series. 'The team came close to winning (at Lord's) and then lost,' said Dev, who is the president of Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), on the sidelines of the announcement of the second half of the national golf calender. Stokes ends two-year wait for Test hundred before India collapse in fourth Test 'It's a new team and it is getting an opportunity. In the coming days, these boys will come back with tournament victories. 'Any new team needs time to adjust. The new captain has to learn a lot and this series will be a learning step (for him).' Gill, a top-order batter, leads the series batting with over 600 runs including three centuries and a career-best of 269 in the second Test in Birmingham. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been India's best bowler with 14 wickets in five innings despite the collective decision that he play just three Tests to manage his workload. Bumrah, a yorker specialist who bowls with an unusual slingshot action has more than 200 Test wickets in his injury-prone career of 48 Tests. But Dev, who never missed a Test due to injury in his 16-year-old career that ended in 1994 with 434 wickets, defended Bumrah's decision to skip matches. 'I think everybody is different,' the 1983 World Cup-winning captain told reporters. 'Times have changed, bodies are different and they are working differently. 'He is one of the finest bowlers we have. His action is so awkward, and to sustain it this far, I think it's fabulous. 'We never thought that someone would play so long (with this action) because he puts so much stress on his body. He is still delivering for the Indian team, hats off to him.' Dev said Indian golf is ready to take a leaf out of cricket's set up in India and expand with the PGTI securing new sponsors and increased prize money for tournaments.

Former Liverpool and Man Utd star Ince banned for drink-driving
LONDON: Former Liverpool and Manchester United star Paul Ince has been banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay £7,085 (RM40,434) after a drink-driving offence. Ince admitted driving his black Range Rover while over the limit on June 28 in Cheshire. The ex-England captain had a reading of 49 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when he was stopped by police, Chester Magistrates court heard today. Nigel Jones, prosecuting, said: "On the day in question, the defendant was witnessed by an off-duty police officer driving a vehicle perceived to be swerving across the road." He said the 57-year-old's car swerved across the central reservation, hitting bollards and causing two tyres to burst. Frank Rogers, defending Ince, said: "My client finds himself today facing the huge impact of a ban, but he accepts he only has himself to blame for that. "He misjudged the fact he believed at the time he would be under the limit." Rogers said Ince had been at Heswall Golf Club and had not eaten before having two drinks in the clubhouse. "He felt fine to drive, of course we now know that he shouldn't have done," Rogers said. District Judge Jack McGarva told Ince: "The message has got to be if you're going to drive you don't drink at all." Ince, who also played for Inter Milan and West Ham, earned 53 caps for England, winning two Premier League titles among a host of trophies during his six years as a United midfielder. He moved into management after retiring, with his most recent spell in charge at Reading ending in 2023. - AFP

Nebraska fireworks sales begin this week after lawmakers increased State Fire Marshal fees
Revelers enjoy the July 4 fireworks in Ralston, Neb., in 2016. (Aaron Sanderford/Nebraska Examiner) LINCOLN — The return of retail fireworks sales this week comes after Nebraska lawmakers increased State Fire Marshal fees this spring, many for the first time in nearly four decades. Retail fireworks sales started Tuesday ahead of Independence Day (July 4), with sales able to continue through July 5 on a July license, according to state law. The same law required such seasonal retail license applications — now $100 per stand, instead of $25 — to be received no later than June 9. Other fireworks aficionados are also paying higher fees this season, such as jobbers at $400 (up from $200) and distributors at $1,000 (up from $500). Anyone wishing to conduct a public exhibition or 'display fireworks' must receive a 'display' permit, now costing $100 per date, up from $10. State Sen. Dave Wordekemper of Fremont, who led the proposed fee increases through Legislative Bill 434 this year at the request of the State Fire Marshal's Office, said this spring that the fees were a 'critical need that has been overlooked for far too long.' Wordekemper said, for instance, that some of the fire marshal's state fees had not been changed since the 1980s or 1990s. The increases, he said, still wouldn't keep up with the actual costs of such services. 'These fee increases are not taken lightly, but they are necessary to ensure the continued operation of vital safety services that protect our communities, schools, hospitals and businesses,' Wordekemper said in April. State Sen. Christy Armendariz of Omaha, vice chair of the Legislature's Appropriations Committee, gave Wordekemper's bill a boost on the floor saying that the alternative would be more funds from the state's main pocketbook, fueled by sales and income taxes. She said the fee increases would not touch family homes. Armendariz noted there is some 'sticker shock' to some of the increases, but she and Wordekemper said that might not have been the case if the fees were more regularly updated. All fees increasing under LB 434: Fireworks display permit — $100 per date (up from $10). Fireworks distributor's license — $1,000 (up from $500). Fireworks jobber's license — $400 (up from $200). Fireworks retailer's license — $100 per stand (up from $25). Fire alarm inspections — Up to $200 (previous cap was $100). State fire code inspections and compliance, late submittal after remodeling or construction — 50% of projected plan review fee (up from $50 flat fee). Fire safety inspections — $50-$300 (up from $25-$150). Plan reviews (beginning Sept. 1) — Up to $5,000 (previous cap was $500) Plan reviews for accessibility standards and specifications — Up to $5,000 (previous cap was $250). Water-based fire protection system contractor certificate (and renewals) — Up to $200 (previous cap was $100). Tank registration for farm or residential (one-time fee) — $10 (up from $5). Tank installation permit — $75 (up from $50). Tank registration permit (annual) — Up to $60 (previous cap was $30). The State Fire Marshal's Office estimates collecting an additional $800,000 in revenue the next fiscal year (beginning July 1) and $1.5 million the following fiscal year, which could be used to reduce or replace 'reliance' on state dollars.
