The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891. The Vols claim six national championships in 1938, 1940, 1950, 1951, 1967 and 1998. Tennessee has won 16 conference titles in program history (13 SEC, two SoCon, one SIAA). Tennessee's 2025 season will kick off Aug. 30 against Syracuse. The nonconference matchup will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. California bars now legally required to offer lids for drinks
California bars must now provide lids for drinks upon request, a measure intended to prevent drinks from being spiked with drugs. The law, Assembly Bill 2375, which took effect Tuesday, builds on existing legislation requiring bars to offer drug testing strips. Assembly Member Josh Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, introduced both bills. The new requirement applies to bars and nightclubs with Type 48 liquor licenses, which serve beer, wine and liquor, but not food. Violating it carries no penalty, just a warning for a first offense, and the requirement sunsets in 2027. The law was endorsed by alcohol watchdog groups like Alcohol Justice, and passed unanimously. But Bay Area bar operators told the Chronicle they were skeptical of it. The new lid requirement is not expected to be much of a financial burden for the Bay Area's bar operators. (The law also authorizes bars to charge an additional fee for the lids.) But Roxzann De Marco, owner of popular dive bar the Rumpus Room, said her business already offered lids, which she called inexpensive without mentioning a specific price. De Marco also said putting a coaster or napkin over drinks has been a common practice among women at bars for as long as she can remember. While she does support measures to ensure bar goers feel safe, she called the new law a 'bandage' for a problem that requires a deeper solution at a personal and social level. 'I'm not getting on a soapbox or anything, but could we just not roofie each other instead?' she said. Ben Bleiman, founder of the San Francisco Bar Owners Alliance, an organization of 300 local bars, also questioned the effectiveness of the new law. 'You can get 500 lids on Amazon for 50 bucks, but they won't actually do anything,' he said. The requirement follows Assembly Bill 1013, passed in 2023, which required bars and nightclubs to offer drug testing kits for patrons starting last year. The bill also required bars to display clearly visible signs reading 'Don't get roofied! Drink spiking drug test kits available here.' The new law also requires such signs to include mentions of drink lids. Bleiman is critical of the previous requirement. He worries about the accuracy of test strips, and he called the tone of the signs victim-blaming. 'The real problem is the predators that don't seem to be mentioned there,' Bleiman said. At Rumpus Room, De Marco has only handed out a couple of test kits. She said she hopes the new law can offer some peace of mind, but she doesn't expect the lids to be a big hit.

Alex Bowman set to race in Mexico but will have Anthony Alfredo on standby
MEXICO CITY — Anthony Alfredo will be on standby this weekend for Alex Bowman after Bowman's head-on crash last weekend at Michigan, Hendrick Motorsports stated Thursday. Hendrick Motorsports stated that Bowman is set to compete in Sunday's Cup race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The team stated that Bowman was evaluated this week for back pain following the Michigan crash. In 2023, Bowman missed four total Cup races after he suffered fracture vertebra in a sprint car crash. Alfredo is the primary simulator driver for Hendrick Motorsports and also is entered in Saturday's Xfinity race here. At Michigan last weekend, Austin Cindric made contact with Cole Custer and Custer's car hit Bowman's. That sent Bowman's car into the wall head-on. 'That hurt a lot,' Bowman told Prime's Kim Coon after exiting the infield care center at Michigan. 'That was probably top of the board on hits I've taken, and unfortunately I've had a lot of hits. So I hate that for the 48 team. Couldn't really do anything except think about 'Oh (expletive) this is about to hurt really bad.' Hate that. Hate that for our team.' Dustin Long, Bowman finished last in the 36-car field last weekend. Michigan marked the seventh time in the last nine races that Bowman has finished 27th or worse. He has dropped from third to 13th in the standings in that time. Bowman has five top-10 finishes in his last nine road course starts. He won the Chicago Street Race last July for his most recent Cup victory. 'I'm really looking forward to racing in Mexico this weekend,' Bowman said in a statement from Hendrick Motorsports. 'It's always special to bring our sport to new places and feel the excitement from fans who don't always get to see us race in person. 'Our No. 48 Ally Chevy team has had speed, but we haven't had the results to show for it lately. We're ready to turn our luck around and put together a strong race from start to finish.'

Alex Cora optimistic about the return of Wilyer Abreu next week
'This is what we thought it was going to be [timeline-wise],' said Cora, who referenced Abreu participating in weight-room activities. 'We talked to him [Monday], no chance we were going to play shorthanded for three or four days. This is the best move for him and obviously the roster.' Advertisement That tracks with the initial thought from Red Sox decision-makers that Abreu's injury maybe wouldn't require a stint on the injured list at all. When they realized Monday afternoon Abreu needed more than a day or two of recovery, they opted to play it safe and put him on the IL, prompting the call-up of Anthony, regarded as the top prospect in baseball. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up If Abreu indeed comes back quickly, it would raise questions about playing time, outfield arrangement and roster construction. The answers should depend on who is playing to what level of success by the time Abreu is ready. In Abreu's stead, Anthony is due to stick in right field, though he played all three outfield spots in the minors. Advertisement Slow for Slaten Reliever Justin Slaten (right shoulder inflammation) remains stuck in a shutdown period, according to Cora, and is not close to returning. He has been on the IL since June 1, his second arm injury in 11 months. 'It's slower than we expected, let's put it that way,' Cora said. 'He hasn't thrown. He hasn't reacted to treatment the way we expected. It's a slow process.' Slaten had served as a key late-inning option for Cora, who has had to lean more heavily on others in Slaten's absence. 'It's a big [loss],' Cora said. 'Hopefully this is something we can figure out in the upcoming days and get him going. Right now, it doesn't seem like it's going to be soon.' Numbers game Anthony, who wore No. 48 in his debut Monday, switched to No. 19 on Tuesday. He said clubhouse manager Tom McLaughlin gave it to him because he had worn that number in Triple A. Among the noteworthy former Sox who have worn No. 19: Jackie Bradley Jr. (2017-20 and 2022), Koji Uehara (2013-16), Josh Beckett (2006-12), Fred Lynn (1974-80) and Moe Berg (1935). Most recently, it had been worn last month by Middleborough native Sean Newcomb . Left out versus lefties Cora reiterated his plan to mostly not let Anthony as well as Marcelo Mayer bat against lefthanded pitchers, preferring the righthanded bats of Rob Refsnyder and Romy Gonzalez , respectively, in those spots. Even if Anthony in particular fared well against southpaws in the minors this year, Cora explained that there is a significant difference between those lefthanders and the lefties in the majors. So his righty/lefty splits aren't particularly meaningful. 'The gap is big. It's very big,' Cora said. 'The lefties here are real lefties. There's stuff here, especially guys in the bullpen … If you have stuff, you're going to be here. You're not going to be in Triple A or Double A. Advertisement 'The kids, they understand … They're all in to win it. They know. We will keep doing that.' Up in arms Of the 35 relievers who have appeared in 30 or more games this season, three are Red Sox: Greg Weissert (31), Brennan Bernardino (31) and Aroldis Chapman (30). Chapman pitched for a third day in a row — for the first time this season — Monday. 'You're going to go through stretches that you don't pitch,' Cora said. 'It seems like we've been in this stretch that everybody pitches every day for a month now.' . . . Seymour's homecoming The Rays optioned lefthander Ian Seymour , a St. John's of Shrewsbury product, back to Triple A Durham, a day after he picked up the win in his major league debut in Tampa Bay's 10-8 defeat of the Red Sox in 11 innings. Seymour pitched the two extra innings, allowing a lone unearned run and no hits . . . Lefthander Chris Murphy joined Triple A Worcester to continue his rehab assignment. He had Tommy John surgery in April 2024 . . . Tanner Houck (right flexor pronator strain) threw his second bullpen session Tuesday and said he is scheduled for another Friday . . . Tampa Bay's Zack Littell , who will start Wednesday, on his five days with the Red Sox in 2023: 'Every now and again, I'll see a picture of me in a Red Sox jersey and it's weird. It's almost like it didn't happen, but it did happen and there's proof.' Advertisement Tim Healey can be reached at

Alex Bowman on Michigan crash: 'That hurt a lot'
BROOKLYN, Mich. — Alex Bowman walked away after he suffered one of the hardest hits in his career when his car slammed the SAFER barrier head-on in Sunday's Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. Bowman was running outside the top 25 when Cole Custer and Austin Cindric made contact, sending Custer's car into Bowman's car. That contact turned Bowman and sent his car head-on into the SAFER barrier. 'That hurt a lot,' Bowman told Prime's Kim Coon after exiting the infield care center. 'That was probably top of the board on hits I've taken, and unfortunately I've had a lot of hits. So I hate that for the 48 team. Couldn't really do anything except think about 'Oh (expletive) this is about to hurt really bad.' Hate that. Hate that for our team. 'It's been a rough two months. I mean, honesty, we were pretty decent (in practice), I was pretty optimistic to start today. We got super loose and just had a long pit stop trying to make an adjustment to make it better and never really got a chance to race again after that. 'Confident that my guys would have gotten the car better, and we could have gotten back up through there, but unfortunately, when you get in the back like that, shit gets pretty crazy, and stuff like that happens.' This marks the seventh time in the last nine races that Bowman has finished 25th or worse. He entered Sunday's race 12th in the points but will score only one point at Michigan with a 36th-place finish. The red flag is out at @MISpeedway after this incident involving multiple cars.@Alex_Bowman exited the No. 48 under his own power. #NASCAR … Damage to Alex Bowman's car after that crash at Michigan
