Sabah Karate Association sending 83-member contingent to Indonesia meet

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) is making a return to the 4th Shureido International Karate Cup championship to be held at Gelanggang Olahraga Ciracas in West Jakarta, Indonesia starting on July 4. SKA secretary general Julian Chin said on Tuesday that they will be represented by 83 athletes accompanied by nine coaches. 'The organisers are expecting more than 2,000 participants in the three-day competition. This will be a good opportunity for our athletes to gain experience against strong foreign opponents and hopefully they can give their best,' he said. SKA did not take part in the meet last year. Sabah Karate Association clinch overall title

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) clinched the overall title in the 33rd National Under-14, Cadet and Junior Karate Championship which concluded at the Penampang Cultural hall on Sunday. They bagged 12 gold, 10 silver and 23 bronze medals to top the tally well ahead of second place Johor Karate Association who only managed to collect four golds, two silvers and three bronzes followed by Kelantan Karate Association in third spot with three golds, four silvers and one bronze. Advertisement Their winning golds were delivered by the male and female teams kata (cadet & junior), Razmi Nur Rasyiqah Fariah (cadet female individual kata & kumite -54kg), Azlan Amirah Syahindah (cadet female individual kumite +61kg), Razmi Nur Radhiah Fathiah (junior female individual kumite -48kg), Ahmat Khairil Iman (junior male individual kumite -61kg), Lorimer Sierra Dyanne (Under-14 female individual kata), Fernandez King Iona Siew Lin Maria (Under-14 female individual kumite -47kg), Rajis Danish Rayyan (Under-14 male individual kata & kumite -55kg), Eusebius Arthur Braxton (Under-14 male individual kumite -45kg). However, they failed to make it to the podium in the 43rd Senior Championship and only finished in fifth place with one gold, four silvers and three bronzes behind overall winners Johor Karate Association with five golds, one silver and one bronze followed by Terengganu Sports Council (three golds, three silvers, one bronze), Hayashi Ha Malaysia Karate Federation (two golds, two silvers, seven bronzes) and National Sports Council (two golds, two silvers and three bronzes). SKA was represented by 157 athletes with 14 men and 13 women competing in the Senior Championship. Secretary general Julian Chin was happy with the overall performance of the athletes. The athletes' achievement was not just due to their hard work, but also the unwavering support from the coaches, teammates, families, fans as well as from the president and the supreme council of SKA. 'There are more to come from our athletes as we are preparing for the 4th Shureido International Karate Cup to be held in Jakarta in July,' he said.
