Indian-Americans in California alarmed as Senate advances transnational repression bill
The Indian diaspora, including Hindus, have expressed serious concern over the "rapid advancement" of California Senate Bill, SB 509. The bill, which claims to address "transnational repression", is seen by some sections of the Indian community as a "potential threat to the civil liberties and safety of minority communities".The bill, which was passed by the Senate and is being rushed through the Assembly, according to two advocacy groups, The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) and the Hindu American Foundation (HAF).advertisementSB 509 aims to counter foreign governments or agents who threaten, surveil, or silence people living in California. While this goal seems noble, critics say its language is overly broad and could unintentionally target members of immigrant communities. The bill has been referred to the Assembly's Emergency Management Committee as of June 9, 2025. If it clears the Assembly, it will move to Governor Gavin Newsom's desk for final WAS THE BILL INTRODUCED?SB 509 was authored by Senator Anna Caballero and co-authored by Assembly members Esmeralda Soria and Jasmeet Bains. All have been rejected. Now, the bill is being rushed through the Assembly after it passed the Senate vote without any effort to address community concerns," the statement CoHNA and HAF felt their concerns had been ignored by the bill's authors — Senators Anna Caballero and Assembly members Jasmeet Bains and Esmeralda Soria, CoHNA the lawmakers have doubled down on legislation that could unjustly label peaceful advocacy efforts as foreign interference, placing innocent Hindu Californians at risk of undue scrutiny and profiling, the statement Kalra, managing director of the Hindu American Foundation and a Civil Rights Attorney, reiterated, "SB 509 lacks the adequate guardrails necessary to prevent training on transnational repression from being politicised.""More dangerously, under the guise of protecting 'dissent', SB 509 would empower law enforcement to criminally prosecute diaspora groups and community organisations who merely speak out against terrorism and extremism, by accusing them of being foreign 'agents' or engaging in 'transnational repression' on behalf of a foreign country," Kalra added.

Supreme Court refuses to reduce sentence of advocate who abused woman magistrate in 2015
The Supreme Court Tuesday decided not to interfere with a Delhi High Court order which refused to reduce the sentence awarded to an advocate for outraging the modesty of a woman judicial officer in 2015, and granted him two weeks to surrender. A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan recorded that it is 'not inclined to interfere with the orders' passed by the Delhi High Court against advocate Sanjay Rathore and dismissed his plea. In October 2015, the complainant judicial officer was serving as a metropolitan magistrate in the Karkardooma court when Rathore, enraged by an adjournment in his matter in his absence, verbally abused the officer, including using gendered abusive language. An FIR was subsequently lodged at the Farsh Bazar police station. Rathore was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment under Indian Penal Code Section 509 (intending to outrage modesty of a woman), three months under Section 189 (injury to public servant), and an additional three months under Section 353 (assault or criminal force against public servant to deter them from their duty). It was directed that the sentences should run consecutively, thereby resulting in a total sentence of two years. The Delhi High Court, while refusing to reduce the sentence, however, modified it so that the sentences could run concurrently instead of consecutively. As a result, Rathore was sentenced to a total of one year and six months in prison. The high court, in its order of May 26, emphasised that acts threatening or intimidating a judge, especially through 'gender-specific abuse, is an assault on justice itself, and must be met with firm accountability'. While refusing Rathore any relief, it further recorded in its order, 'The act of outraging the modesty of a judicial officer while she was presiding over court proceedings, seated on the dais and discharging her solemn duty of dispensing justice, in this court's opinion, attacks the very foundation of judicial decorum and the institutional integrity.'

Sustained capacity addition, PPA tie ups improve revenue visibility for Acme Solar
The stock of Acme Solar Holdings , a renewable energy producer, has gained 18% on bourses in a month following strong fourth quarter performance in terms of double digit revenue and profit growth and improved power generation. The company continues to expand the operational capacity of its projects, which is fully tied up to long term power purchase agreements (PPA) with central and state government agencies thereby offering revenue visibility. Analysts anticipate a strong revenue and profit growth annually between FY25 and FY28. The company builds, owns, and operates renewable energy projects in solar, wind, hybrid and firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE) categories. FDRE offers firm power supply at higher capacity utilisation factor (CUF) compared with solar and wind projects. On June 10, Acme announced commissioning of 75 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity at its project in Sikar, Rajasthan, which follows a 165 MW addition in May taking the commissioned capacity to 240 MW out of planned capacity of 300 MW. This has also enhanced its total operational capacity to 2,806 MW as of June 10, 2025 from 1,340 MW a year ago. It has another 4,164 MW of capacity at various stages of implementation, which is expected to be commissioned by FY28. In FY25, the company's power generation increased by 55.2% to 4,013 million units, driven by improved operational capacity and an increase in CUF to 25.6% in FY25 from 23.6% in the previous year. The company monetised 369 MW of assets in FY25. Excluding that, revenue grew by 32.3% year-on-year to Rs1,575 crore while net profit surged nearly four times to Rs 251 crore in FY25. Acme's asset base expanded by 36% to Rs15,507 crore while net worth grew by 74% to Rs4,509 crore, helped by an initial public offering (IPO) in November wherein it raised Rs 2,395 crore of fresh equity. The stock has been under pressure since its public listing on November 13, mostly trading below the offer price of Rs 289 given the hangover of additional stake sale by the promoter group to reduce its holding from 83.4% to 75% or below to abide by the regulatory requirement. 'Given the company's discernible execution performance and visibility on upcoming capacity, we estimate revenue and EBITDA to grow by 54% and 57% over FY25-28,' stated JM Financial Research in a report. It has a buy call on ths tock with a target price of Rs270. The stock was last traded at Rs252.8 on Tuesday on the BSE.

Teacher in Alor Gajah affair controversy lodges report over leaked video
ALOR GAJAH: A 31-year-old female teacher at the centre of controversy surrounding an alleged extramarital affair has lodged a police report, claiming that an intimate video of her has gone viral. Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Ashari Abu Samah said the teacher lodged a report here recently as she was dissatisfied upon discovering that her intimate video had been circulated. He said police have opened an investigation under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting the modesty of a person and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. "However, we have yet to trace the video in question," he said on Saturday (May 31). Supt Ashari added that the investigation will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instructions. On Friday (May 30), the teacher and a male wiring technician were each fined the maximum amount of RM5,000 by the Melaka Syariah High Court for attempting to commit adultery. The case had previously attracted widespread attention on social media when the female teacher issued a public apology amid allegations of an affair with a 31-year-old married man, known online as "abang wiring". The matter sparked public outrage after screenshots of lewd and inappropriate conversations between the two went viral on WhatsApp.
