Public Works makes strides in reducing rental payments owed to landlords

'As at 6 June 2025, the outstanding rental amount is R2,540,382.42 (0.5%) and R19,897,707.26 (4.1%) for April and May, respectively,' he said. Macpherson said there were 1,991 leases for 1,274 landlords valued at R484,425,687.62 in the lease administration system and the payment system for April rental payments as of June 6. 'Forty-four leases (2.2%) affecting 26 landlords (2%) amounting to R2,540,382.42 (0.5%) failed Central Supplier Database (CSD) verification and therefore were not paid.' He also said there had been 1,995 leases for 1,269 landlords valued at R483,952,863.48 for May. At least 89 leases (4.5%) affecting 75 landlords (5.9%), amounting to R19,897,707.26 (4.1%) were not verified and were not paid. Macpherson said the payment system was still processing the June rental payments. 'The outstanding rental payments for April 2025 are 44 leases (2.2%) affecting 26 landlords (2%). The outstanding lease payments for May are 89 leases (4.5%) affecting 75 landlords (5.9%),' he said. 'It must be noted that the non-payment of transactions submitted on the payment system is primarily due to landlords not being compliant with CSD. In addition, 33 CSD non-compliant landlords from April are included in the May figure.' Meanwhile, the Independent Development Trust (IDT) has collected R882 million in payments in just three months from 15 departments that owed for infrastructure projects it implemented on their behalf. 'The IDT has been able to collect R882,374,561 between 01 April 2025 and 30 June 2025,' Macpherson said. The entity has paid a total of 1,366 service providers to the tune of R648,167,277. 'As at 30 June 2025, 790 service providers remained unpaid an amount of R1,394,036,545. The variance in the amount is due to additional invoices that would have been received between 01 April 2025 and 30 June 2025,' he said. Macpherson was responding to ActionSA MP Malebo Patricia Kobe, who enquired about the department's obligation to pay contractors after receiving money due from client departments. The IDT had informed the portfolio committee in June that it was owed R1.2 billion by client departments. It informed Parliament four months ago that it had been unable to pay service providers due to delays in payment by client departments. The entity has incurred R47m in total expenditure on legal costs and owed creditors for more than 12,000 invoices that could not be paid within the 30-day deadline as of the end of March last year.

Kuwait Courts handled 5,234 traffic cases in Q1
KUWAIT CITY, July 19: Official statistics issued by the Statistics and Research Department at the Ministry of Justice revealed that courts in various governorates handled 5,234 traffic cases in the first quarter of 2025, indicating that 2,906 of these cases were adjudicated, while 2,328 cases were postponed. The statistics revealed that Hawally Court topped the list in terms of the number of adjudicated cases, with 597, followed by Farwaniya Court with 552 and Capital Court with 491. In contrast, Mubarak Al-Kabeer Court recorded the lowest number of resolved cases with 404. For postponed cases, Jahra Court topped the list with 576 cases, followed by Hawally Court with 489 cases; while Farwaniya Court ranked last in terms of the number of postponed cases with 300. Regarding the total number of cases received, Hawally Court ranked first with 1,086 cases, followed by Jahra Court with 1,050, and Farwaniya Court with 852. In addition, statistics showed that traffic courts issued 1,524 criminal rulings and penal orders in the first quarter of 2025 -- 70 driving license revocation rulings, 43 prison sentences, and 48 traffic fatality cases pending in the courts. Hawally Court recorded the highest number of criminal rulings and orders issued, with 626, followed by the Capital with 304 and Farwaniya with 223. According to the statistics, the total collected criminal fees in the same period amounted to KD87,609, distributed as follows: Capital Court with KD21,996; Hawally Court with KD15,925; Ahmadi Court with KD12,725; Farwaniya Court with KD16,823; Mubarak Al-Kabeer Court with KD10,600 and Jahra Court with KD9,540. Commenting on the figures, Attorney Hussein Al-Asfour stated 'the issuance of this large number of rulings within a short period reflects the seriousness of the courts in addressing the traffic problem, and confirms the role of the judiciary in protecting lives and properties.' Al-Asfour stressed that 'the fine and imprisonment rulings send a firm legal message to those who act recklessly and contribute to enforcing the rule of law, especially in light of the unfortunate increase in accidents resulting from speeding or driving under the influence of drugs.'

Miri man duped of RM1.5mil in online share investment scam
MIRI: A man lost more than RM1.5 million to a fraudulent online share investment scheme after responding to an advertisement he found on the Internet. Miri police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the victim, in his 40s, lodged a report on Sunday after realising he had been scammed. The victim claimed he came across an investment advertisement on Google, clicked on a link and was redirected to a WhatsApp contact identified as "Susan". "The victim was persuaded to make 22 transactions amounting to RM1,540,458 to eight bank accounts provided by the suspect, supposedly for investment purposes," said Farhan. The victim realised he had been duped when he did not receive any returns and the suspect gave excuses to delay payments. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Farhan urged the public to remain vigilant and not to fall for investment offers that promise high returns in a short period. Landing gear snag delays Kol-Doha flight by 5 hrs
Kolkata: A suspected snag in the landing gear, probably due to hydraulics or electrical issue, delayed the departure of a Qatar Airways flight from Kolkata airport on Monday. The aircraft in use was a Boeing B 787-8 twinjet. The airline alternates between this aircraft and an Airbus A 350-900 twinjet on this sector. Flight QR 540 reached Kolkata at 2.14 am, around 6 minutes before the scheduled arrival. However, the return flight QR 541 departed nearly 5 hours behind schedule. Sources said the pilots may have either experienced a problem with the deployment of the landing gear prior to touchdown or received an alert on the cockpit instrument panel about an issue with the landing gear. After passengers alighted from the aircraft, the boarding of Doha-bound passengers was kept on hold while engineers looked into the landing gear, including the hydraulics, to sort out the issue.
