F1 could return to naturally aspirated V8s by 2029, says Ben Sulayem
Formula One could go back to using noisy V8 engines with fully sustainable fuel by 2029 at the earliest, according to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The sport is entering a new engine era next season, but the head of the governing body suggested last February that a return to the naturally aspirated V8s or V10s was being considered after that. The V8 engines were last used in 2013 before the 1.6l turbocharged V6 units. "The engine is so complicated, you have no idea, and it is costly," Ben Sulayem told reporters at the weekend's British Grand Prix. "R&D is reaching $200m (R3,562,554,000), and the engine is costing about $1.8m (R32m) to $2.1m (R37.4m), so if we go with a straight V8, let's see. "Many manufacturers produce V8s in their cars, so commercially it's correct. How much is it? You drop it. The target is more than 50% in everything." Ben Sulayem said the V8 engine would also have significant weight advantages and the sound would be welcomed by nostalgic fans and the new generation. "To us, the V8 is happening. With the teams, I'm very optimistic and happy about it. FOM (Formula One Management) are supportive, the teams are realising it is the right way," he said. "We need to do it soon. You need three years, so hopefully by 2029 we have something there, but the fuel is also very expensive, and we have to be very careful with that. Transmissions are very expensive." Ben Sulayem also spoke about the possibility of a Chinese team filling the final 12th slot, something he has mentioned before, and said he felt the sport needed more cars rather than more races. "The time will come when we feel it is right to open an expression of interest," he said about filling the 12th slot. "We are not here to upset other teams. It won't be go and do it for the sake of doing it. It has to be worth it for us. The team has to add value to sustaining the business of Formula One." General Motors' Cadillac brand is due to become the 11th team next season, a slot won after initial resistance from the other teams and Liberty Media-owned Formula One.

It's been nearly three years since New York Mets slugger Juan Soto played for the Washington Nationals, but he is forever cemented in the latter club's lore. The four-time All-Star signed with it as an international free agent in 2015, and it developed him into a future Hall of Famer. The five-time Silver Slugger led them to their first-ever World Series title just one season later, slashing .277/.373/.554 with five homers and 14 RBI over 17 playoff games. Washington then traded Soto and Josh Bell to the San Diego Padres in August 2022 for CJ Abrams, MacKenzie Gore, Robert Hassell, James Wood, Jarlin Susana, and Luke Voit. Fast-forward to Tuesday, and Soto smacked a 373-foot solo homer to left center off of Gore in the third inning of the Mets-Nationals game. The 26-year-old shared what he said to Gore as he rounded the bases, via Anthony DiComo. New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto (26).Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images "We were saying hi to each other. Gold jumps Rs6,600 on global rally
Globally, gold prices rose for a third straight session, helped by a softer dollar and safe-haven demand amid economic and geopolitical uncertainty. photo: Reuters Listen to article Gold prices in Pakistan surged on Wednesday in tandem with gains in the international market, where bullion extended its upward streak for a third consecutive session, reaching a one-week high. The global rally was driven by a softer US dollar and renewed safe-haven demand amid prevailing economic and geopolitical uncertainty. According to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA), the price of gold per tola in the domestic market rose sharply by Rs6,600, settling at Rs349,400. Similarly, the rate for 10 grams increased by Rs5,659 to Rs299,554. A day earlier, gold prices had edged up by Rs300 per tola, reaching Rs342,800. Adnan Agar, Director at Interactive Commodities, noted that while gold is currently trading around $3,310 in the international market, it faces significant resistance near the $3,350 level. "There is potential for further upside if this resistance is breached, possibly pushing prices toward $3,380 and $3,420," he said. "However, if the market fails to break this level, a pullback toward $3,280 or even $3,270 is likely." He added that trading remains relatively subdued, with gradual movement and limited momentum compared to previous sessions. Market activity may also be affected by the upcoming US bank holiday on Monday, which could influence global trading volumes and price direction in the short term. Globally, gold prices rose for a third straight session on Wednesday and hit a one-week high, helped by a softer dollar and safe-haven demand amid economic and geopolitical uncertainty. Spot gold was up 0.7% at $3,312.51 an ounce, as of 1553 GMT. US gold futures climbed 0.9% to $3,315.60. The US dollar fell 0.6% against a range of other currencies, making gold less expensive to buy for overseas currency holders. Wall Street's main indexes slipped and government bond yields rose, as investors closely watched a pivotal debate over US President Donald Trump's tax-cut bill that has fanned concerns about the country's growing debt. The Pakistani rupee weakened slightly against the US dollar in the interbank market on Wednesday, posting a minor depreciation of 0.02%. By the day's end, the local currency closed at 281.97, slipping by five paisas compared to the previous day's close of 281.92. Ismail Iqbal Securities wrote that on a cumulative basis, the local currency has depreciated by 1.21% since the beginning of the calendar year (CYTD) and by 1.29% since the start of the fiscal year (FYTD).
