BMW 5 Series goes back to its inline six roots with special edition

BMW Canada has revealed the 2026 BMW 540i xDrive Legacy Edition, a heritage-inspired limited edition that marks the return of the inline-six 5 Series (sans PHEV tech) to the region. Just 151 units will be produced, claiming to 'embody the essence of the traditional 5 Series experience' thanks to the 'now legendary' 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six petrol engine under the bonnet, developing 375hp (280kW) of power and and 398 lb-ft (540Nm) of torque. Featuring intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive and a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, the 540i xDrive Legacy Edition can scoot from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds, which makes the heritage special as quick to triple figures as the E60-generation V10-powered M5 from the 2000s-2010s. Spec sheet headliners include no-cost option BMW Individual Manufaktur paintwork such as the beautiful Maldives Blue II Metallic shown here alongside a matching E34-gen 540i sedan; the M Sport Pro Package; 21-inch Individual alloy wheels; as well as an 18-speaker Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system. Pricing starts at $94,500 CAD (A$105,830), with orders opening back on 18 June in Canada. BMW says first deliveries are expected to begin during the fourth quarter of 2025. BMW Australia doesn't offer the 540i xDrive, though the 540d xDrive with its 3.0-litre inline six turbo-diesel is sold here. The mild-hybrid-assisted oiler makes less power but more torque (223kW/670Nm), good for a 5.2-second 0-100km/h dash. Supplied Credit: CarExpert The 5 Series range in Australia starts from $114,900 before on-road costs for the four-cylinder turbo 520i, with the inline-six 540d xDrive priced from $134,900 plus on-roads. The electric i5 eDrive40 kicks off from $155,900, while the high-performance i5 M60 starts from $215,900 – all prices exclude on-road costs. While the 540i xDrive Legacy Edition is destined exclusively for the Canadian market, Australian customers can specify the local 5 Series range with similar equipment, including the lovely Maldives Blue II Metallic BMW Individual Manufaktur paint (~A$7300) and the M Sport Plus Package (~A$3200). The BMW 5 Series Is Dominating In Europe Right Now

Mercedes-Benz and BMW unveiled the current E-Class and 5 Series within a month of each other in 2023. Buyers are clearly favoring one over the other so far this year, and those in Stuttgart have to be a bit disappointed with the trend. The 5 Series is outselling the E-Class and its other rivals by a wide margin. Automotive News Europe reported on numbers published by Dataforce that show BMW sold about 5,000 more cars than Mercedes through the first four months of the year. That's despite both models seeing sizeable sales increases compared to the same period in 2024. Sales for the 5 Series and E-Class are up 56 percent and 19 percent, respectively, according to the data. Model Jan.-April Sales BMW 5 Series 20,402 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 15,811 Audi A6/S6 13,774 Volvo S90/V90 2,722 Lexus ES 1,397 Audi S7/S7 1,216 Maserati Ghibli 51 The E-Class barely outsold the Audi A6/S6, which saw a 10 percent increase, but both crushed the Volvo S90/V90, Lexus ES, and the Audi A6/A7. BMW's electric i5 also outsold its other electrified rivals, squeaking past the Audi A6 E-Tron—8,843 versus 7,460 units. Mercedes sold just 3,740 EQE sedans. Shrinking Selection Completely missing from the list is the Jaguar XF, which the automaker stopped building in the middle of 2024 . The brand is undergoing a bold reimagining that will move the automaker upmarket to compete with Bentley, Maybach, and Porsche. Maserati announced it would end the car's production in 2024, leaving buyers with fewer choices, which makes the current iterations of the 5 Series and E-Class even more important to their respective brands as they battle for customers. BMW Will Make 5 Series Buyers Wait For New Looks And Tech

BMW's Executive Sedan Is Late For A Meeting With Buyers The current-generation G60 BMW 5 Series was officially revealed a little more than two years ago, on 24 May 2023, and in Bimmer land, that means it's starting to get a little old. BMW likes to put the latest and most advanced technology possible in each of its model updates, so the G60's now-obsolete rotary iDrive wheel and associated systems are beginning to feel a little 'last season,' so to speak. However, despite the fact that BMW's new Panoramic iDrive infotainment system was revealed six months ago, the 5er isn't getting its mid-cycle update, or Life Cycle Impulse, as early as planned. According to a reliable insider who provides updates on the Bimmerpost forum, the G60 LCI will arrive four months late. Comprehensive Changes To BMW's Product Plan According to the post, updates for June 2025 include moving the launch of the updated G60 from March 2027 to July. The same report claims that the next X5 (codenamed G65) will be in production until July 2035, which means it will need to satisfy the market for nine years, while the current F70 1 Series and F74 2 Series Gran Coupe will stick around two years longer than originally anticipated, until October 2032. Back to SUVs for a second, and the assumption is that the G66 X6 and G67 X7 will have similarly long production cycles. Finally, the same report says that the U.S.-spec Z4 M40i and both versions of Toyota Gazoo Racing's Supra will continue to be produced in Austria at the Magna Steyr facility for another two months, only ending production in May 2026. No reasons were given for these extended production cycles, but the ever-changing geopolitical environment may be a contributing factor. More Tech Will Dominate The 5 Series The new 5 Series will get the latest infotainment tech, says the forum post, adding that, along with Panoramic Vision, a passenger display will become an optional extra. On the outside, we expect the G60 facelift to wear a new face inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse and Vision Neue Klasse X concepts. The look has already become evident in spy shots of the next-gen M3, as well as the updated G90 M5 seen below, so it's inevitable that the 5er will make the switch too. Hopefully, BMW doesn't create a Russian Doll situation with its styling, but we'll have to wait a little longer to find out. With production only commencing in July 2027, we suspect the reveal will happen at the very end of 2026, if not early in January 2027. With all of that being said, it wouldn't be a surprise to see BMW at least mildly update the interior for 2026, unlocking earlier access to updated iDrive systems. Oops! BMW Design Shift Is About to Change Everything

BMW is embarking on a full-scale design revolution that will transform every vehicle in its portfolio. Dubbed the BMW Design Shift, this sweeping change will begin with the highly anticipated iX3 electric SUV, set to debut later this year, and extend to every model in the Bavarian automaker's lineup within the next four years. This bold move represents more than just a new look—it marks a strategic pivot in BMW's design identity. At the heart of the BMW Design Shift is the Neue Klasse design language, a minimalist, forward-thinking aesthetic first showcased in 2023 through concept vehicles. Now, this design vision is going mainstream. Group design chief Adrian van Hooydonk confirmed that the BMW Design Shift is not limited to electric models. Every car in BMW's stable—from the sporty 2 Series to the luxurious 7 Series and rugged X models—will adopt the new styling. 'We're ensuring that the Neue Klasse design becomes the defining face of every BMW,' van Hooydonk stated, noting that the rollout begins this year and will leave 'no car behind.' Interestingly, the transformation will start with the recently updated 5 Series sedan. Despite launching a new generation in 2023, the 5 Series will receive a visual refresh incorporating the Neue Klasse design. Although it remains on the current CLAR platform, this facelifted model will serve as the vanguard of the BMW Design Shift. Other key models, including the X5, X2, X7, and 2 Series, will follow shortly. Product development head Bernd Körber emphasized the speed and scope of the initiative, stating that the BMW Design will be completed within just three and a half years. This accelerated timeline reflects BMW's urgency to unify its brand image across all powertrains—combustion, hybrid, and electric. While the Neue Klasse aesthetic will bring cohesion to the brand, BMW assures fans that individuality won't be sacrificed. Each model will retain unique design elements and character traits, ensuring that the Design Shift enhances diversity rather than eliminating it. Initially intended exclusively for EVs, the Neue Klasse approach has since been extended to gas-powered models as well. The massive kidney grilles that once dominated BMW's front-end styling are expected to be replaced by sleeker, more refined surfaces and restrained detailing—hallmarks of the new design philosophy. The BMW Design Shift isn't just a cosmetic update—it's a statement about the brand's future. With a lineup that will soon speak a common design language, BMW is positioning itself to remain a leader in both innovation and visual identity as the industry evolves.
