Toshiba Unveils Automotive Photorelay For 1800V Battery Systems

BUSINESS Toshiba: a new photorelay "TLX9165T" with an output withstand voltage of 1800V (min) suited for high voltage automotive batteries. KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (Toshiba) has introduced an automotive photorelay, TLX9165T, designed to support high-voltage battery systems with an output withstand voltage of 1800 volts (V). In a statement, Toshiba said volume shipments of the product, housed in a 10pin SO16L-T package, begin today. The TLX9165T is developed for use in battery management systems (BMS) in electric vehicles (EVs), which monitor battery charge levels and ensure electrical insulation between the high-voltage battery and vehicle body for safe operation. It is also applicable to energy storage systems (ESS) used in renewable energy infrastructure, which operate with voltage levels similar to EV battery systems. Toshiba noted that while 400V battery systems remain standard in EVs, the shift to 800V systems is accelerating to enable faster charging and longer vehicle range. Photorelays in such systems must withstand at least twice the system voltage, which is 1600V or more. The TLX9165T meets this requirement by integrating a newly developed high-voltage MOSFET. The SO16L-T package uses a resin with a Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) of 600 or more, compliant with IEC 60664-1 standards, and offers a creepage distance of 7.5 millimetres (mm) or more on the light receiver side, enabling a rated operating voltage of 1500V. The product retains the same pin pitch and configuration as existing SO16L-T models, allowing designers to reuse printed circuit board layouts. Toshiba will continue to expand its photorelay portfolio for automotive and industrial applications, contributing to the safety and efficiency of high-voltage systems.
