Tributes flood in for Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne

Tributes poured in Wednesday for hell-raiser singer Ozzy Osbourne as Black Sabbath bandmates mourned the death of their legendary frontman and tearful fans laid flowers in his hometown Birmingham, just weeks after he played an epic reunion concert there. Osbourne, nicknamed the 'Prince of Darkness' who famously once bit off the head of a bat while on stage, died on Tuesday at the age of 76, his family said. The heavy metal star, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019, passed away just over a fortnight after playing the final gig before a sold-out crowd in his home city of Birmingham, England. Fans there laid floral tributes in memory of the singer at a mural honoring the band. 'There are no words, truly. Thank you for everything, for all the music,' read one. 'Even recently at your last gig you brought us so much happiness, it's unreal,' added another. Bandmates' tributes Original bandmates led the tributes on social media, with guitarist Tony Iommi saying, 'there won't be another like him'. Bassist Geezer Butler added: 'So glad we got to do it one last time, back in Aston. Love you.' And drummer Bill Ward said Osbourne would forever be in his heart, signing off his post with 'Never goodbye. Thank you forever.' Band co-founder Iommi said Osbourne's death so soon after the well-received musical reunion - their first in 20 years - had been a 'terrible shock'. The concert had been 'brilliant for Ozzy because he really wanted to do that, you know, he felt at home there (in Birmingham) and it was really good for him', he told BBC radio. 'It was good for all of us... we didn't realize it was going to be this final,' he added. 'So much more than metal' US rocker Alice Cooper hailed Osbourne on Instagram as 'an unmatched showman and cultural icon'. Music icon Elton John praised him as 'a huge trailblazer who secured his place in the pantheon of rock gods - a true legend'. 'He was also one of the funniest people I've ever met. I will miss him dearly,' John wrote on Instagram. Osbourne was instrumental in pioneering heavy metal - an offshoot of hard rock - as Black Sabbath enjoyed huge commercial success in the 1970s and 80s after forming in Birmingham in 1968. Black Sabbath's eponymous 1970 debut album made the UK top 10 and paved the way for a string of hit records, including their most famous song 'Paranoid'. Black Sabbath went on to sell more than 75 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Osbourne was added for a second time last year as a solo artist. Rabies shots He gained huge notoriety along the way for his outlandish stunts, many of them fueled by his hard-living style, which included the lavish use of drugs and alcohol. His live performances at the height of his hedonism have gone down in rock folklore, particularly a 1982 gig in Des Moines, Iowa, when he bit the head off a bat on stage. Osbourne said he thought a fan had thrown a fake rubber bat onstage, and it was not until he took a bite that he realized it was real. 'I can assure you the rabies shots I went through afterwards aren't fun,' he told US TV host David Letterman in 1982. His public persona took a new turn with the reality television series 'The Osbournes' in the 2000s, which followed the ups and downs of his family life alongside wife Sharon, whom he married in 1982, and their three children. Osbourne, who had been battling ill health for over 20 years, went public with his Parkinson's diagnosis in 2020. He reportedly died at his mansion in Buckinghamshire, northwest of London. Caroline Rassell, chief executive of the charity Parkinson's UK, said by 'speaking openly' about his diagnosis he and his family had helped many in the same situation. 'They normalized tough conversations and made others feel less alone with a condition that's on the rise,' she said. Osbourne brought the curtain down on a wild career on July 5, when Black Sabbath rattled through their most iconic songs in front of 40,000 adoring fans at Villa Park, home of Premier League football club Aston Villa. AP Less than two weeks before his death, Ozzy announced an upcoming memoir about his life scheduled to be released Oct. 7 by Hachette Book Group. The book's synopsis says it includes stories about Ozzy's time in Black Sabbath, his marriage to Sharon, his health issues and more. 'Look, if it ends tomorrow, I can't complain. I've been all around the world. Seen a lot of things. I've done good … and I've done bad,' he said in a press release about the book. 'But right now,' Ozzy added, 'I'm not ready to go anywhere.'

Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath's bat-biting frontman, dies aged 76

A 2020 photo shows musician and reality TV star Ozzy Osbourne and daughter Kelly Osbourne arriving for the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. LONDON - Ozzy Osbourne, frontman of 1970s heavy metal band Black Sabbath, earned his infamy biting the head off a bat on stage and pursuing a drug-fuelled lifestyle before reinventing himself as a loveable if often foul-mouthed reality TV star. Known to fans as 'The Prince of Darkness' and the 'Godfather of Heavy Metal,' Osbourne has died at the age of 76, the BBC reported, citing a family statement. 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,' read the family's statement. 'He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.' The hell-raising singer, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019, passed away just over two weeks after playing a farewell concert in his home city of Birmingham, England. Osbourne kicked off his career blaring out Black Sabbath's hits, from Paranoid to War Pigs to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Those, plus a string of solo releases, saw him sell more than 100 million records worldwide. The hard riffs and dark subject matter - from depression and war to apocalypse - combined with an instinct for Halloween theatrics. As a performer, Osbourne sprinkled audiences with raw meat and, in 1982, had his encounter with a bat thrown on stage by a fan. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. He later sold branded bat soft toys with a removable head. Osbourne was a regular target for conservative and religious groups concerned about the negative impact of rock music on young people. He always acknowledged the excesses of his lifestyle and lyrics - but poured scorn on the wilder reports that he was an actual devil-worshipper. 'I've done some bad things in my time. But I ain't the devil. I'm just John Osbourne: a working class kid from Aston who quit his job in the factory and went looking for a good time,' he said in a 2010 biography. John Michael Osbourne was the fourth of six children, growing up in Aston, in the city of Birmingham in central England. He struggled with dyslexia, left school at age 15, did a series of menial jobs, and at one point served a brief prison sentence for burglary. Then came Black Sabbath. 'When I was growing up, if you'd have put me up against a wall with the other kids from my street and asked me which one of us was gonna make it to the age of 60, with five kids and four grandkids and houses in Buckinghamshire and California, I wouldn't have put money on me, no f***ing way.' Ozzy Osbourne was the frontman of 1970s heavy metal band Black Sabbath. PHOTO: REUTERS It was those latter stages of his life that provided the setting for his reinvention in 2002 as the star of US TV show The Osbournes. Cameras followed the ageing rock god ambling round his huge house, pronouncing on events in his heavy Birmingham accent and looking on bemused at the antics of his family - a format that won them all legions of new fans. Osbourne's family included wife and manager Sharon, five children including Jack, Kelly and Aimee, and several grandchildren. He brought the curtain down on a wild career earlier this month when Black Sabbath rattled through their most iconic songs in front of an adoring crowd at Villa Park, home of Premier League football club Aston Villa. 'It's the last song ever. Your support has enabled us to live an amazing lifestyle... Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,' Osbourne told the crowd, after finishing the set with Paranoid – the band's most famous song. REUTERS, AFP

Under British law, police cannot name suspects before charges are filed. The Sun, which first reported the story, said producer Abe Diaw told them Sunday that he was hospitalized after Brown beat him in an unprovoked attack at the Tape nightclub in the swanky Mayfair neighborhood in London in February 2023. The tabloid said it became aware Brown was in the U.K. on Wednesday and called police to find out if he was under arrest. The newspaper said Met officers then traveled to Manchester and made the arrest. Brown's representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press. Diaw said Brown cracked him on the head with a bottle and punched and kicked him on the floor. The producer has filed a 12 million pound ($16 million) lawsuit against the singer. Brown was on a U.K. tour at the time of the incident. He is scheduled to tour the U.K. in June and July. Toronto Maple Leafs Toronto Maple Leafs World Columnists Editorial Cartoons
