With VP Polls On Horizon, How One Vote Blocked KR Narayanan's Unopposed Win In 1992

Narayanan and Joginder Singh were the only candidates for the 1992 Vice Presidential election Out of the 16 Vice Presidential elections held in India so far, four were uncontested—1952, 1957, 1979, and 1987. The 1992 election might have joined that list if not for Kaka Joginder Singh, a perennial candidate famed for contesting and losing over 300 polls. Singh, famously dubbed 'Dharti Pakad" for his habit of filing nominations across the country only to lose, contested the 1992 Vice Presidential polls and secured a solitary vote. As a result, KR Narayanan, the candidate of the ruling Congress party, was technically not elected unopposed, even though he won 700 of the 701 valid votes. The Election of 1992 Narayanan and Joginder Singh were the only candidates for the 1992 Vice Presidential election. Out of 790 electors, 711 (90.00%) voted. With ten votes found to be invalid, there were 701 valid votes. Narayanan secured 700 out of 701 valid votes—more than double the quota of 351—while Singh got just one. Though there's no official count, Joginder Singh is believed to have contested around 310 elections in India—from the presidency to the Lok Sabha. He lost every single one before passing away in 1998. 2025 Election The Election Commission of India on Tuesday issued a booklet titled 'Election to the Office of Vice-President of India, 2025", which elucidates all notable aspects of this election in a simple and accessible format. Aimed at enhancing public awareness about the upcoming 2025 Vice Presidential Election—necessitated by the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar last week—the booklet lays out the key constitutional and procedural elements. The poll body is mandated to conduct the election to the office of the Vice President of India 'as soon as possible" after the vacancy arises. The ECI explained that the newly elected Vice President will be entitled to hold the post for a full five-year term from the date of assuming office. 'The Vice-Presidential Election significantly differs from the more commonly known elections to the House of People and State Legislative Assemblies in terms of the electorate involved, eligibility of candidates, the system of voting, the counting of votes and the legal provisions that govern the election, to name a few," the ECI stated. The booklet broadly covers the constitutional provisions relating to the Vice Presidential election, the composition of the electoral college, candidate eligibility, nomination rules, framing of the election schedule, appointment of the returning officer and assistant returning officers, poll venue, system of voting, counting method, and procedures for resolving disputes. It also includes brief notes on all 16 Vice Presidential elections held between 1952 and 2022. The Journey of 16 elections The upcoming 2025 election will be the seventeenth. Earlier elections to this office were held in 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007, 2012, 2017, and 2022. Details shared in the 28-page booklet show that only four of the 16 elections for the post of Vice President have been won without a contest. Two-time Vice President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was elected unopposed in 1952 and 1957. In 1952, Janab Shaik Khadir Hussain from Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh filed a nomination, but his papers were rejected—leaving Radhakrishnan as the sole candidate. The first contested election for the post occurred in 1962 when Dr Zakir Hussain faced NC Samantsinhar. Hussain secured 568 votes—276 more than the required quota. Samantsinhar received only 14 votes. With a victory margin of 554, this is the second VP election with the highest margin after 1992. In 1967, VV Giri was elected with 483 votes. He resigned in 1969 to contest the Presidential election. That year's Vice Presidential election saw the highest number of candidates—six. GS Pathak won with 400 first-preference votes. The 1979 election also saw Mohammad Hidayatullah declared elected unopposed. The 1987 election also saw a Vice President elected unopposed. According to the ECI document, 27 candidates filed nominations, but on scrutiny, the returning officer found only one valid nomination—Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma, then governor of Maharashtra. It was the last time a Vice President was elected unopposed. top videos View all Since 2012, three Vice Presidential elections have been held—each with two candidates in the fray. As India heads into its 17th Vice Presidential election, the ECI's new booklet not only demystifies the process but also recalls how even a single candidate—be it a front-runner or a footnote—can shape the narrative of Indian democracy. Ranking the 25 best Oregon Ducks since 2000: No. 7 — De'Anthony Thomas

Over the last 25 years, the Oregon Ducks have been one of the single best teams in all of college football, sitting near the top of the sport for the better part of a quarter-century. Since 2000, Oregon has compiled an overall record of 239-83 (.742), with just two losing seasons during that span. They've been to 24 bowl games, won three Rose Bowls, been to a pair of College Football Playoffs, and appeared in two National Championships. They've seen a Heisman Trophy winner in Marcus Mariota and had 99 players selected in the NFL Draft. It's safe to say that when looking at the nation's best in this millennium, Oregon belongs in the conversation. But who are the players who helped get Nike University into that conversation? That's a different question entirely. To celebrate the quarter-century mark, we're going to dive into that question over the next month as we approach the start of the 2025 season. The Ducks have had hundreds of memorable and beloved players over the years, many of whom will live on forever in some way. But who is the best of the best? That answer, of course, is subjective. When reviewing the numbers and conducting our research, we took several factors into account: career statistics, overall impact and success, legacy, fan adoration, and NFL success. Boiling 25 years of Oregon football down to 25 players is no easy task, and not one that we took lightly. Dozens of players were left on the cutting room floor who deserve a spot in the top 25, and at some point, subtracting names off the list started to feel like pulling teeth. But in the end, we were left with 25 players, whom we will honor over the next few weeks. If you want to catch up, let's take a look at how we've gotten to where we're at in the rankings: Today, let's continue with No. 7 — The Black Mamba, De'Anthony Thomas. Player Overview When De'Anthony Thomas dropped his commitment to USC and came to Oregon, it signified the first recruiting battle the Ducks won over the Trojans on this magnitude. It was major news when he flipped on signing day. The Trojans envisioned DAT as the next Reggie Bush and it was a major blow to their program when he came to Eugene. As it turned out, he was the perfect player for Chip Kelly's offense. It could be said DAT was the most electrifying player in Oregon history. Every time he touched the ball, whether it was as a running back, a receiver, or a kick returner, there was always a good chance he would take it to the house. DAT was a video game in real life and it was a blast to watch. De'Anthony Thomas' Career Stats 2011-13: 243 rushes, 1,890 yards (7.8 ypc), 26 TD, 113 catches, 1,296 yards (11.5 ypc), 15 TD, 25.8 yards per KO return, 4 TD, 17.1 yards per punt return, 1 TD De'Anthony Thomas' Single Best Season 2012 — 13 Games, 92 carries, 701 yards (7.6 ypc), 11 TD, 45 catches, 445 yards, 5 TD, 24.3 yards per kick return, 1 TD, 13 punt returns, 222 yards, 17.1 ypr DAT became more of a fixture in the Oregon offense his sophomore season and the production shows. He was more of a plug-and-play type guy his freshman season as the Ducks were still trying to figure out how to maximize his talents. However, in 2012, everything came together, including a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the Fiesta Bowl, which set the tone for the entire game in a 35-17 win over Kansas State. De'Anthony Thomas' Historical Records De'Anthony Thomas NFL Draft Thomas was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. De'Anthony Thomas' NFL Success DAT played six seasons in the NFL, mostly with the Chiefs. He ended the 2019 season with the Baltimore Ravens. However, he never really made the type of impact in the NFL as he did in Eugene. Injuries also slowed him down some and speed was a major factor in his game. In total, he played in 69 games and scored four touchdowns in his career. De'Anthony Thomas' Lasting Legacy Thomas was a product of his time and was exactly what Chip Kelly needed for his offense —a do-everything hybrid player who was just emerging on the scene in college football. If Thomas was playing now, college football teams would be lining up with the NIL money waiting to throw his way. Oregon and USC had often fought over recruits in the Southern California area, but Thomas shocked the world when he flipped. It was a huge off-the-field win for the Ducks, a trend that keeps on going to this day. Oil and gas consultant loses RM2.7m in investment scam

IPOH: An oil and gas consultant lost over RM2.7 million after falling victim to a non-existent investment scheme advertised on a website. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 37-year-old man lodged a police report on June 29 at the Ipoh district police headquarters, claiming he had been scammed through an online investment platform known as 'Nova 88.' Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim registered an account on the website in April 2023 through a contact, now the main suspect, whom he had met via WhatsApp. Convinced by the suspect, the victim made an initial deposit of RM30,000 into a provided account number and was then given a user ID and password to monitor the supposed investment. 'Between Jan 5, 2024, and May 20, 2025, the victim made 136 fund transfers to seven different accounts, totalling RM2,701,687. The funds came from his savings and contributions from family members,' Noor Hisam said in a statement on Tuesday (July 1). He said the victim realised he had been duped when each attempt to withdraw his purported profits required additional payments. To date, he has been unable to access any returns, with the suspect offering numerous excuses before eventually becoming unreachable. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Noor Hisam advised the public to avoid any form of investment offered through unlicensed, unregistered, or unregulated websites. 'Such investments carry high risks and can lead to significant financial losses. Always verify the background of any investment company with recognised authorities such as Bank Negara Malaysia or the Securities Commission,' he said.

Oil and gas consultant scammed of RM2.7 million in fake investment scheme

IPOH: An oil and gas consultant lost over RM2.7 million to a fraudulent online investment scheme through a website to which he was introduced. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 37-year-old victim lodged a report on June 29 after realising he had been deceived over a period spanning more than a year. He said that in April 2023, the victim was introduced to the investment platform via a contact he met on WhatsApp. "Trusting the individual, he registered an account on the website and began depositing funds with the expectation of high returns. "The victim initially deposited RM30,000 and was given login credentials to monitor his investments. "Between Jan 5, 2024, and May 20, 2025, he proceeded to make 136 transactions to seven different bank accounts, totalling RM2,701,687," he said in a statement. Noor Hisam added that the funds were sourced from both the victim's personal savings and family contributions. "However, red flags began to emerge when the victim was repeatedly asked to make additional payments each time he attempted to withdraw his so-called profits. "To date, he has been unable to retrieve any of the promised returns, and the suspect (who introduced the victim to the scheme) has become unreachable," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Noor Hisam warned the public to remain cautious of unregulated online investment platforms, especially those promoted through social media or messaging apps. "These schemes are often not regulated by recognised authorities and pose a high risk of financial loss," he said. He said potential investors should verify the legitimacy of any investment company with relevant bodies, such as Bank Negara Malaysia or the Securities Commission Malaysia, before parting with their money.
