Perak dengue cases drop to 1,213 with one death as of July 26

IPOH: The Perak Health Department reported 1,213 dengue fever cases and one fatality as of July 26 this year, marking a sharp decrease compared to the same period in 2024. State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs, and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan confirmed the figures, noting a significant reduction from last year's 5,058 cases and nine deaths. The sole fatality involved a 68-year-old man from the Tasek Industrial Area in Kinta district, who passed away on June 23. Sivanesan shared the details during a press conference following the pre-launch of the cloud-based clinical management system (CCMS) at Buntong Health Clinic. In a parallel development, 16 health clinics across Perak have been selected for CCMS implementation this year. Key locations include Buntong, Jelapang, and Greentown in Kinta, alongside Simpang and Taiping clinics in Larut, Matang, and Selama district. Sivanesan confirmed that all 16 clinics have received the necessary ICT infrastructure to support the new system. - Bernama

Perak offers RM5,000 aid for trade union formation to empower workers

IPOH: The Perak government aims to encourage about 10 per cent of public and private sector workers to form trade unions in the state within the next three years as part of efforts to empower workers' rights and safeguard their welfare. State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said Perak is the first state to provide a special allocation of RM5,000 to help workers set up their unions. 'In Perak, out of 1.25 million workers, only a small number have joined unions. The membership rate in this state is lower than the national average of eight per cent. 'Unions are established in workplaces to ensure industrial harmony. If there is a union, workers can negotiate for salary adjustments every two years, as well as for health benefits and leave-related matters,' he told a press conference here today. He said union formation should now be easier following the 2023 amendments to the Trade Unions Act 1959, but many employers remain fearful and are reluctant to allow their workers to form unions. To facilitate union formation, Sivanesan said the state Trade Union Affairs Department has been instructed to represent the state government and assist the workers. 'When a pro-tem committee is formed but has yet to be registered with the Trade Union Affairs Department, it requires funding to carry out its activities, as it is not permitted to collect money. That's why the Perak state government will provide the funds. 'The funds will be used to help workers establish unions. I hope this will benefit at least 1.1 million workers who are currently not union members or have no union at their workplaces,' he said. He said that union formation is crucial as Perak is expected to have around 30,000 new workers in the future due to upcoming industrial projects in Proton City, Lumut Maritime Industrial City (LUMIC), Bagan Datuk, Chemor, and Kinta Industrial Park. - Bernama

Perak backs union drive for private sector workers

IPOH: Perak has become the first state in the country to support private sector workers in forming unions at their workplaces. State Health, Human Resources, National Integration, and Indian Community Affairs Committee Chairman A. Sivanesan said the state government is also allocating a special provision of RM5,000 to assist workers in establishing unions. He said the initiative aims to promote industrial harmony, particularly with the development of at least five new industrial zones expected to generate over 30,000 job opportunities. "Unions are formed in workplaces to ensure industrial harmony. Through unions, workers can negotiate for salary adjustments every two years, as well as address issues related to health and leave entitlements. "Many employers still fear the presence of unions. I have instructed the Perak Union Affairs Department to represent the state government in assisting workers throughout the union formation process. "Any matters concerning union formation or legal issues under the Trade Unions Act 1959 will be handled directly by my office," he told reporters here today. Sivanesan said there are currently about 1.25 million workers in Perak, including civil servants. However, he said fewer than eight percent of private sector employees are union members. He added that the state government aims to increase this figure to at least 10 percent over the next three years. "With the influx of approximately 30,000 new workers expected from upcoming industrial projects in Proton City, Lumut Maritime Industrial City, and the Kinta Industrial Park, the importance of forming unions cannot be overstated," he said. Sivanesan also reassured employers that concerns about strikes are largely unfounded. "Strikes are extremely difficult to carry out due to the strict procedures outlined in the Industrial Relations Act 1967. "In fact, there have been no major strikes in the past 45 years," he added.
