NBA team signs ex-HBCU star after NBA Draft

Steve Settle III, a former standout at HBCU Howard University, has signed a deal with the Miami Heat following the 2025 NBA Draft. It's reportedly an Exhibit-10 deal. The move marks a major step forward for Settle, who began his career at one of the most prominent HBCUs in the country and now has a chance to make his mark in the NBA. Settle's journey to the NBA began at Howard, where he redshirted his first season before emerging as one of the most versatile forwards in the MEAC. Over three seasons with the Bison, he developed into a consistent two-way contributor. In 2022–23, he helped lead Howard to both the MEAC regular season and tournament titles, averaging 11.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. His performance in the NCAA Tournament against Kansas - where he scored 13 points - showed he could compete on the national stage. After his success at the HBCU level, Settle transferred to Temple University for his final two seasons and elevated his game. During the 2024–25 campaign, he started all 31 games for the Owls, averaging 12.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and shooting an impressive 41.6 percent from beyond the arc. He recorded four double-doubles and finished the season with 12 straight games of at least 11 points, capping his career with a 22-point performance in the AAC Tournament. Settle's signing with the Miami Heat is a significant moment for HBCU basketball, as it continues to produce NBA-caliber talent. His progression from an HBCU program to one of the NBA's most respected franchises demonstrates the depth of skill found across all levels of college basketball. He joins a growing list of HBCU products making their way to the professional ranks, further reinforcing the talent pipeline that HBCUs provide to the NBA. With his length, shooting ability, and defensive versatility, Settle has the tools to carve out a role in the Heat's system. As training camp approaches, he'll aim to prove that his game - sharpened at Howard and Temple - belongs at the next level. His journey is not just a personal milestone but also another step forward for HBCUs on the NBA stage. The post NBA team signs ex-HBCU star after NBA Draft appeared first on HBCU Gameday. Five inmates still on run from Orleans Parish jailbreak; U.S. Marshals says possible help could be involved

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It's been six days since 10 inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish jail. Five are already back in custody, but law enforcement is searching for the remaining five escapees. 'Everyone should continue to stay alert. If you see something, you should say something,' said Attorney General Liz Murrill. Murrill and state agencies are vowing the search for the remaining escapees of Orleans Parish Jail remain a top priority. Attorney General Murrill and District Attorney Jason Williams tour Orleans Parish Jail Over the last few days, numerous law enforcement agencies have been seen actively searching throughout the city to bring them back into custody. 'We're not going to stop looking. We want them to know that,' said U.S. Marshal Deputy Chief Brian Fair. Fair says this has been a tedious investigation, as normally they are searching for one or two fugitives at once, never 10. 'It does make process and all the information, a little harder, but to say the least, because there's just such a volume of information on each of these people that went on the run,' said Fair. He is also not ruling out that some of the escapees could now be out of state. 'They could be in the area; they could be out of the area. We have to investigate all the leads we're given, but they do have ties to family and friends in the New Orleans area. So, it's a good possibility they're here. Although some of those ties may have helped them leave town or leave the state,' said Fair. Man claims to be selling NOLA prison escapee's orange slippers on Facebook Marketplace While the search for the remaining inmates continues, three others have been arrested for helping them escape, and officials say more arrests could follow. 'It's very possible, yes, additional people could be arrested along the way. We're fairly confident that the individuals on the run are getting some assistance,' said Fair. 'If you help them, you will be prosecuted. You shouldn't help them. It is perpetuating the threat to public safety. By doing that, the longer that you know, the more help that they get, the more charges they're going to be,' said Murrill. As the search narrows, law enforcement is confident they will be captured. 'We only have to be good one time, whereas they have to look over their shoulder every day, 24 hours a day,' said Fair. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the remaining five inmates. Clemson lands former UAB guard Efrem Johnson in the transfer portal

Brad Brownell and the Clemson men's basketball program continued to reshape their roster with the addition of UAB transfer Efrem 'Butta' Johnson, who announced his commitment to the Tigers on Sunday. Johnson becomes the first guard Clemson has landed from the portal this offseason and brings a veteran presence to a backcourt that's short on experience. The 6-foot-4 guard has one year of eligibility remaining and is coming off a strong junior season in which he averaged 11.2 points, 1.7 assists and shot 35.9% from three-point range. He made 25 starts in 34 games and hit a team-high 56 threes for the Blazers. Johnson also scored 17 points in UAB's matchup against Clemson earlier this season and added a career-high 21 points in the AAC Tournament. Clemson has now added four players through the transfer portal, with Johnson joining frontcourt newcomers RJ Godfrey, Nick Davidson and Carter Welling. With several scholarship players departing, including starting guards Chase Hunter and Ian Schieffelin, Johnson provides much-needed experience. Dillon Hunter is the only returning guard with real minutes from last season, and the Tigers will also welcome four-star freshman Zac Foster and redshirt freshman Ace Buckner to the mix. Penny Hardaway growing as a head coach in his Memphis Tigers' latest March Madness trip

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis coach Penny Hardaway thrilled fans as an NBA player and showed his chops as a college recruiter in the early days of the transfer portal and name, image and likeness compensation for players. His credentials as a basketball coach? Not among Hardaway's best qualities to be mentioned first for the rare coach still with his own shoe line. This March Madness, that may finally be changing in his seventh year at his alma mater. Credit last season's disaster of a season. 'That fall that I took actually made me better,' Hardaway said. 'It made the team better because I got better.' As a result, Hardaway is the American Athletic Conference coach of the year. It's the latest and maybe biggest answer to critics questioning whether he could actually coach games as well as he draws in talent. His Tigers mobbed him at practice when told of Hardaway's win and joined the celebration with a big grin. The team followed it up by adding the AAC Tournament title on Sunday. The Tigers go into the NCAA Tournament as the No. 5 seed in the West Region, playing 12 seed Colorado State on Friday in Seattle. It's the program's highest NCAA Tournament seeding since 2009, right before John Calipari bolted for Kentucky and a year after the Tigers lost in the national championship game. 'Growth as a coach, growth as a person, my faith, again, like I say,' Hardaway said after the tournament title win. 'Through the storm, that was a huge storm last year, you know, losing this game, the first round at the tournament, my mother having throat cancer and just really just going through it. To be here now, happy, winning a regular season and the conference championship, man, I feel blessed and grateful.' Hardaway hoisted the AAC regular-season hardware with Memphis — a team almost totally rebuilt from a disappointing season -– and cut down the nets on their home floor to celebrate. 'It means a lot because I've grown a lot,' Hardaway said winning that league title. 'I didn't feel like I had it all together at one point.' When hired in March 2018, Hardaway was seen as the favorite son and savior of a program that had languished under predecessor Tubby Smith. Hardaway has won the NIT, been to the NCAA Tournament twice and finally has a conference championship. The accomplishments so far are more significant given what happendd a year ago. Preseason promise and hopes of dominating the American Athletic Conference came crashing down. The Tigers finished tied for fifth, dealt with internal problems and were eliminated in a first-round loss to Wichita State in the conference tournament. That left Memphis not playing somewhere in the postseason for the first time in four years. 'The bottom fell out,' Hardaway said, 'and there was nothing I could do about it.' So, Hardaway changed everything. Coaching staff, the roster, his own approach to coaching. He acknowledged that he was 'relying on too many people.' 'I had to learn a lot, and that growth this year was what I needed,' Hardaway said. 'It's just a great feeling.' He loaded up Memphis' non-conference schedule and recorded early victories over defending national champion UConn and then-No. 7 Michigan State. The Tigers beat then-No. 21 Missouri and No. 10 Clemson before going 16-2 in the American. In some circles, Hardaway was considered a good AAU coach who won high school titles. There was question of whether Hardaway could transform from a great player to leading a team and take the Tigers back to the program's former glory, which features a trio of Final Four appearances. 'Penny's a laid-back coach,' said senior guard Tyrese Hunter, who suffered a left foot injury in the conference tournament semifinal against Tulane. 'I think him kind of stepping out of that, getting on us more, helped us throughout this whole season.' Whether it was the growing experience or the shocks of last season, Hardaway seems to have grasped some of the nuances of the job. Center Moussa Cisse agreed with Hunter that Hardaway holds players more accountable now. 'He holds me to a higher standard, so I got to match that,' Cisse said. 'So I would say that's the difference. He really coaches everybody, like, the same and then he gives us, like -- what do you call it? Energy. So that's probably the difference.'
