City traders call for boycotting Turkish apples, dry fruits

1 2 3 Guwahati: In response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Guwahati's trading community has urged local merchants and buyers to avoid Turkish products, specifically apples and dry fruits. The traders emphasise that this decision stems from patriotic sentiments rather than concerns about cost or product quality. The boycott movement has gained momentum following Turkey's support for Pakistan and its criticism of India's military action against terror installations in the neighbouring nation. Turkish apples have traditionally maintained a significant presence in city markets, particularly when domestic produce is scarce or not fresh. According to Prantosh Roy, general secretary of All Assam Traders Association (AATA), these imports reach Assam through Kolkata after passing through Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. "We've been appealing to traders to stop selling these bright red Turkish apples, as well as the dry fruits that have grown popular over the years. Yes, there is business in them, but nationalism comes first. This is not a decision driven by commerce or profit, but by our love for the country," Roy said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Supporting this stance, Kailash Kabre, vice-president of Kamrup Chamber of Commerce, stated that business activities and terrorism cannot coexist, emphasising that this boycott sends a strong message to Turkey regarding India's stance against support for hostile activities. Local fruit vendors appear committed to this national cause, prioritising patriotism over commercial gains. "We are unfazed by that as we can rely on our state's own produce, which are from Kashmir and Shimla. Internationally, there is a plan to procure from the United States, but given the steep tariffs, we are looking for alternate options," said Varun Kumar, a city-based fruit seller. Kumar said apple sales typically conclude this month, as these fruits are predominantly winter favourites, with current prices ranging between Rs 100-120 per kg, varying across retailers. "Summer season is arriving, so its general that consumers are going to shift their focus more on the summer fruits like mango and watermelon," he said.

Call for govt support to Covid-hit traders

1 2 Guwahati: The All Assam Traders' Association (AATA) on Friday sought immediate govt intervention to support traders severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Numerous traders, forced to cease operations during lockdown measures, continue to grapple with substantial economic losses incurred during the health emergency. Prantosh Roy, serving as the association's general secretary, emphasised the crucial need for dedicated support, encompassing financial assistance and business recovery initiatives . "Many of the traders have faced an unprecedented challenge due to the pandemic, and without proper assistance, it is extremely difficult for them to restart their businesses. We have been assisting them in every way possible, but we now request the help of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma," Roy stated during a press briefing. Furthermore, the AATA requested the state govt to implement systematic allocation for street vendors in Fancy Bazar, a prominent commercial district. The organisation pointed out that uncontrolled street vending activities are adversely affecting established businesses. Shop owners face difficulties attracting customers as vendors occupy crucial street and pavement spaces. "While we understand the livelihood concerns of street vendors, the current situation is not sustainable for established businesses. We are not asking the administration to throw them out, we demand for the need of a clear framework that ensures street vendors are operating in a way that does not harm the interests of the shopkeepers and businesses in the area," Roy further stated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo The association has called upon the state govt to promptly address these concerns, as traders confront uncertainties stemming from both the pandemic's lingering impact and ongoing complications related to street vendor positioning.
