Mathieu Darche adroitly avoided sentiment in important first Islanders draft

It's just unfortunate that Jeff Gorton didn't want Noah Dobson this badly seven years ago — or even at all — when, as the Rangers general manager, he could have selected the righty defenseman at ninth overall in the first round instead of choosing Vitali Kravtsov at the 2018 draft in Dallas. But no. But, fast-forwarding to Friday in his current position as Montreal's executive VP of hockey operations, Gorton oversaw the trade for Dobson by sending the Islanders the 16th and 17th selections in the first round plus winger Emil Heineman after the defenseman agreed to an eight-year extension at a $9.5 million AAV. On the latest DFO Rundown, NHL insider Frank Seravalli hinted that the Florida Panthers star defenseman 'could end up in Columbus. ' The idea has fans talking and raises big questions about Ekblad's next move. Aaron Ekblad linked to Columbus by Frank Seravalli On June 26, 2025, Frank Seravalli spoke during the Daily Faceoff Rundown that Aaron Ekblad 'could end up in Columbus.' Ekblad, 29, is a top‑four right‑shot defenseman and as a two‑time Stanley Cup winner, he remains a hot prospect. With Ekblad's contract likely to expire July 1, Seravalli said multiple teams are watching him closely, including the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Jackets currently have around $40 million in cap space, which gives them room to make a major signing or trade in free agency . Ekblad spent his entire NHL career with the Florida Panthers since being the first overall pick in 2014. Last season he scored 33 points in 56 games and helped lead Florida to back‑to‑back Stanley Cup wins in 2024 and 2025 (). He missed 20 games recently due to a PED suspension, but remains highly regarded for his size, skill, and experience . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like After Losing Weight Kevin James Looks Like A Model 33 Bridges Undo Aaron Ekblad deal talk sparks debate over long term fit Talk of Ekblad possibly ending up in Columbus has stirred conversation among fans and experts. Dobson deal could be template for Oilers D Evan Bouchard extension

Article content That $9.5-million AAV deal that Noah Dobson signed in Montreal after his New York Islanders' trade might be a template for Evan Bouchard's Edmonton Oilers ' contract negotiation. Not sure Bouchard wants to sign here for eight years as Dobson did with the Habs — the feeling is he might want shorter, say, four years, to see where the salary cap goes — but these are similar, offensive-minded defencemen. Same right-shot, same age, 25, same draft year in 2018. Bouchard went 10th, Dobson 12th.

Noah Dobson trade grades: Who won the Islanders and Canadiens deal?

We have a big pre-NHL draft trade that was discussed a bunch on Friday as we get ready for the 2025 edition of the draft: the New York Islanders sent defenseman Noah Dobson (a homegrown stud who was the 12th overall pick in 2018) to the Montreal Canadiens, who are getting another good D-man to add to their blue line that has Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson. This made sense for the Islanders if they weren't giving Dobson a long-term deal given that he was a pending restricted free agent. For the Canadiens? They're taking steps in the right direction for their rebuild. Advertisement As we do around here, let's hand out some grades to each team for this one: Canadiens and Islanders trade details: CANADIENS GET: D Noah Dobson (who got an 8-year contract with an AAV of $9.5 million) ISLANDERS GET: F Emil Heineman, the 16th and 17th overall picks in the 2025 NHL draft Islanders trade grade Dobson is seriously talented, even if his points dipped last season. But if the Islanders weren't re-signing him to a long-term deal, it made sense to deal him. And this haul? It's pretty darn good: TWO first-rounders and Heineman, who was a 2020 second-rounder. He scored 10 goals in his first full-time season last year, and maybe there's more untapped potential here for a 23-year-old with that draft pedigree. Advertisement If you have to deal a top-tier defenseman, this is the kind of return you should get back. It's just a bummer for a team that could use him as they try to get back to the postseason. GRADE: B+ Canadiens trade grade Montreal is on the rise, with their first stop in the playoffs since 2021. And Dobson will anchor the blue line with Hutson for years, which is a formidable pairing. That said, giving up two first-rounders and a former second-round forward is A LOT, plus the giant extension. But that's the price you pay for a talent like Dobson and for moving toward contention.
