In October 2024, the city was conducting a code enforcement at the Tewa Lodge. APD was there to assist when they came across Garcia, who was living at the motel. Police handcuffed him and placed him in the back of a police car. Officers claimed they didn't search Garcia because he was hitting his head on the car. They then discovered he was armed. when one officer tried to grab the gun, other officers opened fire, killing Garcia. [2] Investigation underway after inmate attacked at MDC – –An investigation is underway after a Metropolitan Detention Center inmate attacked another inmate with a pen. An MDC spokesperson said a 24-year-old woman attacked a 49-year-old woman sitting next to her during court proceedings. The woman was seriously injured. Officials said the attacked seemed unprovoked. The investigation is ongoing. [3] Clearer weather with hottest temperatures of the season ahead – Drier and hotter weather will continue to move into New Mexico. Afternoon rain and storm chances will continue to become more hit-or-miss along and east of the central mountain chain and into eastern New Mexico. High pressure will eventually move overhead this weekend, bringing us the hottest weather so far this year. High temperatures will climb into the triple-digits all across southern New Mexico, and will get close to 100° in the Albuquerque Metro by Sunday afternoon. [4] Albuquerque City Council votes down 'RENT' ordinance – Albuquerque city councilors have voted against a proposed set of regulations aimed at addressing poor housing conditions and unfair rental practices. The Renters Empowerment and Neighborhood Transparency ordinance would protect tenants from hidden fees, housing instability, and unresponsive landlords. Landlords showed up in numbers to Wednesday night's zoning meetings saying the ordinance unfairly punishes landlords. [5] Pickleball craze grows in ABQ and Rio Rancho with new courts opening soon – Pickleball is taking off across Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, with both city governments and private businesses investing millions into the sport. The city has 45 pickleball-only courts and more than 50 courts striped for multiple sports across 14 parks. The interest is also booming in Rio Rancho, where they have nearly 20 courts for pickleball. Defined Fitness is getting ready to open an indoor pickleball facility near Intel. It is still unclear whether the child suffocated or overdosed, but meth and fentanyl were in the infant's system at birth. Both parents are now facing charges. Investigators said the child was on a CYFD safety plan due to being drug-exposed. [2] Illegal fishing and dead animals reported at nature preserve ponds near Tingley Beach – Just a few feet off Paseo del Bosque Trial, near Tingley Beach, sit two wildlife ponds filled with fish, turtles and passing geese. For the past three years an anonymous citizen says she has seen people fishing in the ponds, despite the multiple signs that clearly state 'No Fishing.' The woman says she reported what she's seen to the city and APD's open space patrol. The City's Open Space Division said they are looking for volunteers to help patrol the area [3] Less storms with hotter & drier air around New Mexico – A pattern of hotter and drier weather will start Wednesday. Isolated showers and storms will still pop up over the mountains and surrounding areas Wednesday afternoon, but the rain totals will be much lighter. Temperatures will be hotter Wednesday afternoon and even drier air will move into the state Thursday. Temperatures continue to heat up into this weekend. The hottest day will be Sunday and Monday next week. Parts of Albuquerque may hit 100° for the first time this year, with a stretch of triple-digit heat in southern New Mexico. [4] Free drive-in movie experience coming to Balloon Fiesta Park – A free drive-in movie experience is coming to Balloon Fiesta Park thanks to a collaboration between the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' will be shown on June 11 at Balloon Fiesta Park's east parking lot in Albuquerque. The event is part of the Summer of Nonviolence initiative to provide youth with fun and safe activities throughout the summer to keep them engaged and active. Gates open at 7 p.m., and the movie will start at 8:30 p.m. [5] Military working dog is officially retired from Kirtland Air Force Base – Kirtland Air Force Base is sharing the moment one of its military working dog retired from service. KAFB says Hugo, a nine-year-old German Shepherd, has officially completed his tour of duty after serving seven years at the base. Hugo was a narcotics detection and patrol certified dog who completed more than 9,000 hours of work during his career. Albuquerque native injured in machete attack in downtown Los Angeles
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – An Albuquerque native was one of the victims of a violent machete attack in downtown Los Angeles that left another man dead. Although the 35-year-old chef survived this attack, he has a long road to recovery ahead. But the walk home quickly turned violent. As Levitt went to grab his keys to unlock the doorhe heard footsteps running towards him, 'As soon as I went to look up to see the reflection in our lobby door, that's when I had noticed the reflection of a man, and that the running noise had come from him…then that's when the attack started.' recalled Kyle Levitt. Levitt later learned, he was the second person to be attacked that night. A few blocks away, police say the same suspect attacked a 60-year-old man with the same machete and killed him. The attacker hit Levitt from behind, slashing his neck, ear, head, and body. Levitt called for the man to stop and turned around, the man then knocking him to the ground slashing his wrist with the machete then running away, 'That's when I noticed half of my hand had been cut through. So I, both of my tendons leading to my thumb were severed, my Artery was severed in my wrist, the cut went down to the joint of my wrist,' emphasized Levitt. The attack left Levitt with a skull fracture and staples on his head and neck. But worst of all, it left him without the full functionality of both of his hands. As a chef, he's left unable to work, saying it could take months to regain mobility. Levitt was born in raised in New Mexico, but has lived in LA for the last 11 years. He hopes to be back in the kitchen soon, where he hopes to achieve his goal of bringing New Mexican cuisine to Los Angeles. 2 Albuquerque teens accused of killing homeless man face murder charges
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Yet two more teens in Albuquerque face murder charges after police said they shot and killed a homeless man last month. This wasn't the teens' first run-in with the law, one was already on probation for taking a gun to school. The district attorney said this is more evidence that the juvenile justice system isn't working. The frustration level, quite frankly, is at a boiling point. This will be, I believe, the 47th juvenile that we've charged with murder in this office since I've been district attorney,' said Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman. On May 1, Albuquerque police were called to an apartment complex at Carlisle near Montgomery for a homicide. When they arrived that morning, they found 23-year-old Christopher Sturluson dead inside the tent he was living in behind the building. According to a police report, the Albuquerque Police Department arrived the night before due to reports of shots being fired nearby, which were picked up by ShotSpotter. Police interviewed Sturluson at that time. He said there were three males shooting in his direction, and he told them to stop. The next day, Albuquerque Community Safety found Sturluson dead inside the tent with a gunshot wound. Investigators believe 17-year-old Adrian Brown and 18-year-old Joshua Curtis shot and killed Sturluson. Police said the two teens can be seen in surveillance footage from that night walking near the tent moments before shots were fired. Investigators linked casings from the scene to a gun they believe was used in the crime. The DA said Brown has a criminal history involving firearms and was already on juvenile probation at the time of the murder for taking a gun to Sandia High School in 2022. Bregman reiterated his calls in recent months to overhaul the juvenile justice system and said minors need more consequences. 'If we don't start doing something, we will continue to see this kind of result. We're not teaching our kids anything when we're not giving them consequences,' said Bregman. The District Attorney's office said they plan on charging Adrian Brown as an adult for murder. Joshua Curtis is also facing murder and other charges. NM Supreme Court finds error in sentencing of Ruidoso man convicted of murder, armed robbery
RUIRUIDOSO, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Supreme Court found that a district court made an error by imposing a three-year firearm enhancement on a man who was sentenced for a deadly shooting in Ruidoso in 2019. Travis Nolan was convicted of first-degree murder, armed robbery, and tampering with evidence for the death of Christopher Williams. Nolan was sentenced to life in prison plus fifteen years, including a three-year sentence enhancement for using a firearm in the commission of the armed robbery. State law requires a one-year firearm enhancement if the offense is the defendant's first felony. The New Mexico Supreme Court did, however, still affirm Nolan's convictions.
