Line of Duty Season 7: Release date speculation, cast and plot details – Everything we know so far
By Aman Shukla Published on July 20, 2025, 19:00 IST Last updated July 20, 2025, 16:22 IST If you're a Line of Duty fan, you're probably itching to know if AC-12 will be back for another round of catching bent coppers. Jed Mercurio's BBC masterpiece has had us glued to our screens since 2012, and after that jaw-dropping Season 6 finale in 2021, the buzz around Season 7 is louder than ever. So, what's the latest on a potential new season? Let's dive into the rumors, cast news, and possible storylines, based on everything floating around out there. Line of Duty Season 7 Potential Release Date Without a confirmed green light, pinning down a release date is tricky. If filming kicks off in early 2026, as some reports suggest, we might see Season 7 by mid-to-late 2026. Historically, the show tends to drop around spring—March or April—so that's a safe bet for now. A while back, there was a rumor about a three-episode Christmas special, but that fizzled out, so let's not get our hopes up for anything too soon. The show's massive draw—Season 6's finale pulled in 12.8 million viewers—means the BBC probably wants to bring it back. But getting everyone's calendars to line up? That's the real challenge. For now, early 2026 is the best guess, but don't hold your breath just yet. Line of Duty Season 7 Expected Cast If Season 7 happens, you can bet the AC-12 dream team will be front and center: Martin Compston as Steve Arnott, the scrappy detective who's been through the wringer but never backs down. Vicky McClure as Kate Fleming, the queen of undercover ops and AC-12's moral backbone. Adrian Dunbar as Ted Hastings, the gaffer himself, who had us all cheering when he dodged retirement in Season 6. We could also see Anna Maxwell Martin back as the icy DCS Patricia Carmichael, who's got her own agenda. Shalom Brune-Franklin's DC Chloe Bishop might return too, especially since her role grew in Season 6. And here's a juicy tidbit: Christina Chong (DI Nicola Rogerson) recently said she's been approached about being available for 2026 filming, so that's a strong hint she's in the mix. As for new faces, Line of Duty loves throwing in a big guest star each season—think Thandiwe Newton or Stephen Graham. Season 7 could bring someone new to stir the pot, but don't expect Kelly Macdonald's Jo Davidson to pop up, as her character's now tucked away in witness protection. Line of Duty Season 7 Potential Plot Season 6 wrapped with a bombshell: DCI Ian Buckells was 'H,' the corrupt mastermind tied to the OCG. But let's be real—some fans felt that reveal didn't quite tie up all the loose ends. So, what could Season 7 tackle? Here's what's on the table: AC-12's Fight for Survival : The unit got merged with others at the end of Season 6, and Chief Constable Osborne's out to bury anti-corruption efforts. Could Ted, Steve, and Kate push back against Carmichael's power grab? More Corruption Drama : The OCG's still out there, and Osborne's shady dealings could spark a fresh investigation. Maybe we'll dig into Carmichael's motives or uncover a new 'H'-level player. Personal Struggles: Steve's dealing with chronic pain and a sketchy drug test from last season, which could put his badge at risk. Kate's back with her old unit, and Ted's got his leadership role to protect. There's plenty of room for their stories to get messy. Jed Mercurio's teased that any new season would need a bold, fresh angle. He could either pick up the 'H' thread or dive into a whole new case. Either way, expect twists, tense interrogations, and at least one 'fella' from Ted. Ahmedabad Plane Crash Aman Shukla is a post-graduate in mass communication . Truth revealed after Line of Duty fans claim season 7 filming has been confirmed
Line of Duty fans believed they had found some fresh hope for a seventh series of the BBC police procedural – but all is not as it seems. The critically acclaimed crime thriller wrapped up with a 'final' series in 2021, but speculation has remained rife ever since that series creator Jed Mercurio and the show's stars could be back for more. Eagle-eyed viewers spotted what appeared to be an update on the show's filming schedule, suggesting the AC-12 are set to get back together for a new anti-corruption investigation. The update was posted to the Film & Television Industry Alliance website, which shares details of all major film and TV projects currently in pre-production or development. The listing includes details of the cast, with Vicky McClure, Martin Compston and Adrian Dunbar as the elite police taskforce, as well as Mercurio as writer and producer. It also states that the seventh series is currently in pre-production, with filming set to begin on December 1 this year. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The shooting locations listed are Belfast and Birmingham, which is in line with previous seasons. The show's first series was shot in Birmingham, before subsequent seasons moved to Northern Ireland. However, Metro understands that the post on the film and TV production website was actually in reference to season four, which aired in 2017. The post was shared to an ever-active Reddit thread dedicated to the show, where some fans were hopeful, while others already suspected it might not paint the whole picture. @Marcbeightsix wrote in response: 'It would very much surprise me that they film over the winter considering the amount of outdoor shoots they need to do.' Meanwhile, @SlapDatBassBro agreed that they were 'not too convinced', referring to the project summary as 'AI slop'. The summary on the website reads: 'Police drama about the investigations of anticorruption unit AC-12. More Trending 'When DCI Roz Huntley captures a serial killer, the chief forensic investigator alerts AC-12 to a possible miscarriage of justice.' @Winter_Machine5572, who shared the initial listing, wrote: 'This website also has production info for Season 6 listed, stating that it began filming in February 2020. This turned out to be correct, so gives the Season 7 shoot date some credibility.' Metro contacted Jed Mercurio and the BBC for comment. Line of Duty star admits she's not allowed to return to the BBC series
Line of Duty star Anna Maxwell Martin has opened up about the BBC drama's return - and revealed that character Patricia Carmichael won't be back in any future series Line of Duty star Anna Maxwell Martin has ruled out the possibility of her returning for any future series of the hit BBC police drama. Since fans found out the identity of crime boss H in the highly-anticipated 2021 finale, they've been crying out for AC-12 to make their return to BBC One. Earlier this year, star Christina Chong revealed that the cast had been asked about their availability for later in the year - seemingly confirming that the show will return after four years away. However, there's one particular star who won't be reprising their role. Anna Maxwell Martin took on the role of hard-nosed anti-corruption officer Patricia Carmichael for series five and six, with the character becoming the interim leader of AC-12 when Superintendent Ted Hastings is suspended. At the BAFTA TV Awards last night, Anna revealed that there's no chance of her coming back to the show for a reason that is set to disappoint fans. "Sometimes you're not allowed to revise certain roles due to contracts with other streamers," she explained to the BBC. Earlier this year, Line of Duty's Martin Compston spoke out about the show returning for a seventh series. He told The Sun 's TV Mag: "We're always talking about possibilities and schedules and whatnot. "Everybody's got stuff going on at the minute, so I think anything, unfortunately, would be a way off. "Because we're all so close and we all want the best for the show, we wouldn't do it again just for the sake of it. If it was just about doing it for the sake of it, we'd have probably done another three series by now. "We really care about the quality of it. So if we come back, it would be for the right reasons." While last month, it was reported that filming on the show will begin in January 2026 after the cast were finally able to clear space in their calendars to commit to make the show. "The BBC almost immediately requested more episodes to continue the story, but the success of the show meant Vicky, Martin and Adrian were instantly snapped up for other projects," a source told The Sun. Line of Duty's sixth series followed anti-corruption team Kate Fleming, Steve Arnott and Ted Hastings as they finally tracked down H - with the bent copper controversially being revealed as bumbling cop Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle).

BBC's biggest drama ‘to return' after final episode left fans ‘deflated'
Mother of God – the BBC is set to bring back Line of Duty for a brand new series. It's been reported, months after the alleged return of the corporation's most underrated series, that the central trio have signed a deal to make six new episodes of the crime show as early as this year. Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar played the roles of Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming and Ted Hastings in the much-loved drama, which depicted the lives of the team working in a unit tasked with rooting out corruption within the police. Jed Mercurio's crime procedural, which started in 2012, last aired in 2021. It drew to an apparent end after finally revealing the identity of 'H' – the name given to a corrupt officer working within the upper echelons of the police. But there were still threads left unanswered. In the episode's final shot, the statement that 'AC-12's powers to curb wrongdoing in public office have never been weaker' suggests an element of unfinished business. Viewers widely panned the finale, which was watched by a staggering 12.8 million, as 'disappointing'. Dunbar previously suggested a new series could take the form of a film or as few as two episodes. But Compston said in April 2024 that there were 'no immediate plans' for another series. 'It's just getting us all together and stuff. We'd like to but, yeah, these things are a bit complicated. But there are no immediate plans,' he told The Mirror. In a statement after the end of series six, outgoing BBC Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore said: 'I'm looking forward to having a conversation with the team about where we go next and what the future of the series might be.' Moore added: 'Addictive event television, Line of Duty has kept the nation guessing for the last seven weeks, so it's no surprise that last night's jaw-dropping finale set a ratings record.' She hailed Mercurio as 'a master of his craft', continuing: 'I would like to congratulate him and the entire cast and crew for delivering such an incredible drama series.' According to The Sun, Mercurio has written most of the storyline for the new episodes, which will start production later this year and could air by autumn 2026. A source said: 'This is the news Line of Duty fans have been waiting for since the sixth season left them deflated when it aired back in 2021. 'The BBC almost immediately requested more episodes to continue the story, but the success of the show meant Vicky, Martin and Adrian were instantly snapped up for other projects. 'But after several meetings with Jed [Mercurio, creator and writer] and the production team, they've finally managed to clear space in their calendars next year to commit to making the show.'
