Man loses 1L in voice cloning fraud

Kanpur: An elderly resident of Babupurwa was swindled out of Rs 1 lakh in an AI voice cloning scam. The fraudster succesfully extracted the money by posing as a relative of the victim- Kaleem Javed. Duplicating the relative's voice who lives in Saudi Arabia, the fraudster gave a call to Javed's father, Waseem, on June 24. The caller, using a WhatsApp Call, claimed to have sent Rs 8,00,000 to Waseem's account. The cybercriminal requested that 1,00,000 rupees be sent to one of his relatives, stating that the relative's mother was ill and needed heart surgery. Shortly later, Waseem received another call from one Usman who said that he had sent the account number, on which Wseem sent the money. Once the incident was discovered, a case was filed at the Babupurwa police station. ACP Babupurwa said, "A case has been booked against unidentified cyber crooks. We are expecting an early breakthrough."

Kanpur: A jeweller in Govind Nagar police jurisdiction was provided security by deploying two constables at his residence after he filed a complaint of receiving extortion calls. Earlier, he was also attacked by two assailants on Sunday. Anil Gupta, former president of the Bilhaur Trade Association, and resident of Govindnagar area operates his shop in Bilhaur, visiting his establishment on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. On Sunday night, while returning home after closing his shop, he received a call from an unidentified number but couldn't respond. Later, around 9:30pm two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on him outside his house, however the trader escaped unhurt. The assailants fled after the attack. He later received an extortion call for Rs 50 lakh. The criminals called on the following day also after which the trader approached the police. A complaint as filed on Monday and investigation was initiated. ACP Babupurwa Dilip Kumar Singh confirmed that investigators have apprehended additional suspects from Unnao for questioning.
