MDU and ITC Hotels launch India's first apprenticeship embedded degree programme in hospitality and tourism
ITC Hotel Classic Golf and Country Club, and MDU Rohtak partner to launch first apprenticeship-integrated hospitality degree under UGC's AEDP guidelines ROHTAK: In a significant academic-industry collaboration, Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ITC Hotels' Classic Golf & Country Club, launching India's first Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP) in hospitality and tourism under the public university framework, aligned with the UGC Guidelines 2025. The MoU was formally exchanged between Dr. Krishan Kant Gupta, Registrar, MDU, and Pradeep Kumar, Executive Vice President, ITC Hotel Classic Golf Country Club in the august presence of Prof. Rajbir Singh, Vice Chancellor, MDU. Under this collaboration, two skill-integrated undergraduate programmes—BBA (Hospitality & Services Management) and BBA (Tourism, Travel & Events Management)—will be introduced, each with an annual intake of 30 students. These four-year programmes follow a hybrid model, with the first two years dedicated to academic coursework at MDU, and the latter two years structured as an industry apprenticeship at ITC's Classic Golf & Country Club. The curriculum will be co-designed with ITC professionals to ensure alignment with evolving industry standards. "This initiative marks a new era in skill-based education. Karnataka extends AEDP in BCom to 85 govt. colleges effective 2025-26
In response to increased demand from students, Karnataka has extended the Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programmes (AEDP) in BCom courses to 85 government first-grade colleges across the State for the 2025-26 academic year. In addition, the paid apprenticeship, which was limited to the 6th semester earlier for AEDP programmes, has been extended to the fifth semester as well. To provide job opportunities to students, the Higher Education Department had launched four new AEDPs in 45 government first grade colleges in 21 districts in the 2024-25 academic year. The four new degree programmes are BCom in retail, logistics, e-commerce, banking, finance, service, and insurance. How it works Under this programme, students will pursue a regular college education in the first and second year and undergo apprenticeship training with companies in their final year. The students will get a stipend from ₹8,000 to ₹18,000 depending upon capability. The curriculum is provided by the Centre for Research in Schemes and Policies (CRISP) and approved by the board of studies of universities. 'This time, there was a high demand from students for AEDP courses, and colleges were demanding enhancement of these courses. In this context, orders have been issued to start these courses in 85 colleges this year after discussing with the government. Around 50,000 students will benefit,' said Manjushree N., commissioner, Collegiate Education and Technical Education Department. Demand for Arts courses This time, there is a huge demand for degree courses in government first-grade colleges, and a total of 26,923 seats have been enhanced by the College Education Department. Out of this, there was a higher demand for Arts courses, and a total of 13,905 seats have been increased, officials said. As many as 4,856 seats were enhanced for BSc degree and 4,130 seats for 516 for BBA, 2,841 for BCA, 495 for BSW and 180 for other courses. The increase in seats for BBA and BCA courses has been allowed subject to approval from All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE). It has been suggested that teaching of BCA courses should be done on shift basis in colleges where there is a shortage of computers.

Karnal: KUK inks pact with board of apprenticeship training Kanpur
Jun 21, 2025 07:12 AM IST Kurukshetra University on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Board of Apprenticeship Training (Northern Region), Kanpur under the chairmanship of vice chancellor, Som Nath Sachdeva. Under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS), students are offered apprenticeship training. Sachdeva said that as a part of this agreement, Kurukshetra University and the Board of Apprenticeship Training (Northern Region), Kanpur have agreed in principle to implement the apprenticeship component of the AEDP (Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme) for undergraduate programmes such as BCA, BCom (Professional), Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), and BSc LLT, in accordance with UGC guidelines. He also highlighted the vital role of KU Technology Incubation Centre and Centre For Entrepreneurship and further said that internship programmes aligned with NEP-2020 have been launched to empower learners with real-world skills, making them self-reliant. AICTE guidelines for apprenticeship training in engineering and diploma courses
With an aim to integrate apprenticeship training into engineering degree and diploma programmes, to ensure students gain practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has released Apprenticeship Embedded Degree/Diploma Programme (AEDP) guidelines. According to the guidelines, the permissible embedded apprenticeship is a minimum of two semesters for engineering degree and one semester for diploma. The maximum duration of apprenticeship should be as per the decision taken by the institute or university, but a maximum of four semesters for engineering and three semesters for diploma. Earlier, it was six months apprenticeship for engineering courses, and three months for diploma courses. Why this initiative Technical industries such as information technology (IT), automotive, power, manufacturing and construction are at the forefront of innovation and technological advancements. Apprenticeships in these sectors expose individuals to cutting-edge technologies and practices, preparing them for careers in rapidly evolving industries. 'According to a survey by NASSCOM in 2019, India produces 15 lakh engineering graduates every year, but only 2.5 lakh of them succeed in getting jobs in the core engineering industry. In another survey by Aspiring Minds, 80% of Indian engineers were unemployed in 2019'AEDP guidelines Further, it states that a major reason for employability challenges is that many graduates are not skilled enough to work in the engineering sector after completing their graduation. 'To make students industry-ready, degree apprenticeships combine learning and on-the-job training, with the potential to earn while one learns. As per the evaluation studies conducted by NITI Aayog, 79% of the apprentices got employment after successful completion of one year of apprenticeship training,' the guidelines state. Additional credits Implementation of AEDP is aimed at enhancing employability avenues of students, promote active linkage between the higher educational institutions and industries, while allowing students to get stipend. Students get an additional credits from this programme. As per the National Credit Framework (NCF), 30 hours of training correspond to one credit. Apprenticeship training for a duration of one year (1,200 hours) would correspond to 40 credits, and a 6-month (600 hours) apprenticeship corresponds to 20 credit. S. Vidyashankar, Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), told The Hindu, 'AEDP guidelines are important for the skill development of students. The engineering courses curriculum for the year 2025-26 is being revised. All the aspects of the guidelines will be implemented.'

New apprenticeship policy to link degrees, raise stipends

Key measures include an inflation-linked hike in stipend rates, from the current Rs 5,000-9,000 to Rs 6,800-12,300, to reduce dropout rates and attract diverse talent. The reforms also formalise Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programmes (AEDP), enabling apprentices to earn recognised degrees alongside practical training. Additionally, the policy aims to enable global deployment of apprentices at overseas client sites and expand training delivery through digital and virtual platforms. These proposals come amid persistent structural challenges within the apprenticeship framework. An official from ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship (MSDE) said, "The proposed stipend increase is essential to curb dropouts and make apprenticeships viable, especially in sectors like technology, manufacturing, and services where living and commuting costs can be prohibitive." Regional disparities persist, with only 1.2% of apprentices from the North-East despite targeted benefits. Female participation, while improving, continues to lag behind overall workforce levels. Fragmentation between ministry of education and MSDE - which run National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) and Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS), respectively - has caused duplication and inefficiencies. "We are developing a unified apprenticeship portal to integrate certification, data sharing, and employer outreach. This will simplify processes, reduce compliance friction, and improve access for both apprentices and employers," the official added. The 38th meeting of Central Apprenticeship Council, chaired by Jayant Chaudhary, minister of state (independent charge), MSDE, recently discussed these proposals and charted a forward-looking policy roadmap. The reforms include targeted inclusion measures for women, persons with disabilities (PwDs), and youth from the northeastern region (NER). The official noted: "Expanding participation from under-represented groups, particularly from the North-East and PwDs, is a key priority. The pilot project launched in Mizoram, providing an additional Rs 1,500 monthly stipend to over 26,000 apprentices, highlights our commitment." Formal regulation of AEDPs will allow apprentices to earn recognised degrees alongside hands-on training, strengthening the link between education and industry needs. "Only 0.27% of India's workforce are apprentices, compared to 3% in the UK and Germany. Attrition rates remain high. Inflation-linked stipends and degree-linked apprenticeships will help reduce attrition and sustain a steady talent supply," said Nipun Sharma, CEO, degree apprenticeship, Team Lease. He also pointed out the low female participation, despite sectors like electronics manufacturing and smartphone assembly preferring female workers. On global deployment plan, the official said, "Allowing apprentices to gain experience at overseas client sites will expose them to international standards and prepare them for a competitive global workforce."
