Chiefs open training camp focused on Super Bowl redemption following humbling loss to Philadelphia

Andy Reid addressed his players before training camp, emphasizing urgency to the reigning AFC champions. Patrick Mahomes, however, felt no need to reiterate this message, especially after their Super Bowl loss to the Eagles. 'I think enough was spoken after that game,' the two-time MVP quarterback said. 'But I think when you go back to OTAs and back to minicamp and stuff like that, the guys had that mindset. You could tell by the pep in their step and just in the little talks that guys have throughout the team. I don't think anything really needs to be said when you get beat like that. Everybody knows,' Mahomes said, 'that we've got to be better.' This reflects the high expectations in Kansas City. Despite finishing 15-2, tied with the Lions for the best NFL record, and winning their ninth consecutive AFC West title, the Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia stung. The Eagles led 7-0 after the first quarter, extended their lead to 24-0 by halftime, and won 40-22, avenging their previous loss to Mahomes and Co. 'Obviously, we didn't play the way we wanted to play on a national stage, a worldwide stage,' said Mahomes, who was sacked six times and threw two interceptions. 'You want to go out there and be better.' Chiefs general manager Brett Veach spent the offseason addressing these shortcomings. He signed Jaylon Moore and drafted Josh Simmons to protect Mahomes, added Kristian Fulton to the cornerback position, brought in Jerry Tillery to improve the pass rush, and signed Elijah Mitchell to support Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt. Veach also extended contracts for Trey Smith (four-year, $94 million deal) and George Karlaftis (four-year, $93 million extension). Cornerback Trent McDuffie may be next for a significant contract. Every season Karlaftis and McDuffie have played in the NFL has ended in the Super Bowl, resulting in two rings. However, the Super Bowl loss has overshadowed these successes. 'We wanted to finish better,' Karlaftis said. 'We just want to finish our season better.' The work toward that goal began amid heat and humidity at Missouri Western State University. 'The Super Bowl loss kind of helps you out on some of those extra workouts that you don't want to do or some of the different stuff in order to get better for next season and kind of keeps that in your mind,' Mahomes said. 'Now we're here. We're here to start over. How can I get better for my teammates? How can I get better for the guys beside me? And then go out there and attack so that we can find a way to win that last game and not lose it.'

Chiefs' Rashee Rice Making 'Good' Progress In Injury Return

Chiefs' Rashee Rice Making 'Good' Progress In Injury Return originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice is making his way back from a knee injury that saw his 2024 season end after just four games, and the good-news progress he's making will surely put a smile on the faces of fans and the coaching staff. Advertisement With the defending AFC champs beginning OTAs, this is the time of year when, if a player is nursing an injury or, in Rice's case, making a return from a significant one, it is steady as she goes. But in what is somewhat of a surprise, yet a great one at that, per Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star, Rashee wasn't just on the field doing bits and pieces, he was doing everything. "Rashee Rice, a full participant, had a good day," McDowell posted on X. Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice (4) kneels on Medley-Imagn Images Given how the offense struggled at times last season with Rice out, Marquise "Hollywood" Brown not being sighted until Week 16, and the up-and-down form of Travis Kelce, there is a lot of upside for the offense. Advertisement For Rice, it is a great sign that he is a full participant at OTAs, but no doubt the Chiefs will take a cautious approach with their No. 1 weapon. Training camp is a long, arduous grind for players, and we imagine that Rice will be managed through it, much like he is at OTAs. Still, having him on the grass now is a good sign that, come the beginning of the season, the Chiefs will have their No. 1 weapon fully fit and ready to pick up where he left off last season. Joe Thuney agrees to two-year extension with Bears

The Bears are planning on having Joe Thuney around for the next few years. Agent Mike McCartney announced on Tuesday morning that Chicago and Thuney have agreed to a two-year contract extension. Thuney was entering the last year of his contract, which is part of why the Chiefs traded him earlier this offseason. Multiple reports indicate Thuney is now set to make $51 million over the next three years, with $33.5 million fully guaranteed at signing. An All-Pro guard, Thuney moved over to left tackle last season to stabilize the position for the eventual AFC Champions. Now he's set to be a key piece in protecting Caleb Williams for Chicago. The Patriots selected Thuney in the third round of the 2016 draft. He's started 146 games in his nine years, never missing more than two games in a season. He won two Super Bowls with New England before winning another two with Kansas City.

Kansas City Chiefs release unique social media videos to reveal their 2025 schedule

The Kansas City Chiefs, along with the rest of the league, celebrated the unveiling of the 2025 NFL schedule earlier in the week. The defending AFC Champions released not one but two creative videos to reveal the new season's matchups that everyone can enjoy. This year, the kids got into the act with a special version of 'Pictionary', revealing the upcoming season's opponents. The mascot, K.C. Wolf, hilariously assisted the children, making fun guesses at each team with unique clues. The 'Kingdom Crew' didn't hold back with their thoughts on each week of the schedule. The other reveal involved trivia and Chiefs players, cheerleaders, and legends. Fans answered questions in a cab on the way to Arrowhead Stadium. The grand prize for fans who answered correctly was tickets to a game this season, and the clues for each question centered around the opposing franchise. The annual NFL schedule release challenges each team's social media group's creativity, and it appears the Chiefs understood the assignment well.
