Ireland considering hosting global AI summit

The Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence is expected to hear today that the Government is giving consideration to Ireland hosting a Global AI Summit next year, similar to an event which was held in Paris in February. The AI Action Summit saw world leaders, tech CEOs and academics gathering to discuss how to safely embrace AI. The conference highlighted the divisions that exist between the EU and the US when it comes to the regulation of the technology. The AI Committee will today hear from the Minister of State for Trade Promotion, AI and Digital Transformation Niamh Smyth. "We look forward to engaging with the Minister about her plans for Ireland's EU Presidency and how Ireland can lead on AI innovation globally," said Cathaoirleach of the Committee Malcolm Byrne. Ms Smyth will also discuss Ireland's National AI Strategy "AI: Here For Good," which was published in 2021 and updated in November 2024. The EU Artificial Intelligence Act, and its implementation in Ireland, is also on the agenda. "The Committee looks forward to discussing the strategy and the EU AI Act in depth and the implementation of stringent conditions on AI systems for this revolutionary technology to work effectively in areas such as biometric identification, decision-making for public and private services and benefits and machinery," Mr Byrne said.

SFD Signs $30 Million Transport Deal, Launches School Project in Tajikistan

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has signed a $30 million development loan agreement with Tajikistan to finance the Kulob city ring road project. The agreement was signed by SFD CEO Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad and Tajik Minister of Finance Qahhorzoda Faiziddin Sattor, with Saudi Ambassador to Tajikistan Walid bin Abdulrahman Al-Rashidan in attendance. This signing reflects more than two decades of strong development cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Tajikistan. The Kulob ring road project will include the construction of a roadway and two bridges, aiming to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, and support international transport. Moreover, the route will serve as a key corridor linking Central Asia with China and Indian Ocean countries, facilitating safer and more efficient movement of goods and vehicles and driving regional economic and social development. In a parallel effort, Al-Marshad, along with Tajik Deputy Finance Minister Yusuf Majidi and Ambassador Al-Rashidan, laid the foundation stone for a new secondary school in the Danghara district. The school is part of the '$20 million Construction and Equipping of Secondary Schools – Phase V' initiative, which will build 11 schools with the capacity to serve over 7,000 students. Additionally, this project continues SFD's longstanding support of Tajikistan's education sector, following four previous phases that established 57 schools at a total cost of $75 million. Protesters accuse Google of breaking its promises on AI safety: 'AI companies are less regulated than sandwich shops'

A full-blown courtroom drama — complete with a gavel-wielding judge and an attentive jury, played out in London's King's Cross on Monday, mere steps away from Google DeepMind 's headquarters. Google was on trial for allegations of breaking its promises on AI safety. The participants of this faux-production were protesters from PauseAI, an activist group concerned that tech companies are racing into AI with little regard for safety. On Monday, the group congregated near King's Cross station to demand that Google be more transparent about the safety checks it's running on its most cutting-edge AI models. PauseAI argues that Google broke a promise it made during the 2024 AI Safety Summit in Seoul, Korea, when the company agreed to consider external evaluations of its models and publish details about how external parties, including governments, were involved in assessing the risks. When Google launched Gemini 2.5 Pro, its latest frontier model, in April, it did neither of those things. The company said it was because the model was still "experimental." A few weeks later, it released a "model card" with some safety details, which some experts criticized for being too thin on details, TechCrunch previously reported. While the safety report made reference to third-party testers, it did not specify who they were. For PauseAI, this isn't good enough. More importantly, the organization said, it's about not letting any lapse slip by and allowing Google to set a precedent. "If we let Google get away with breaking their word, it sends a signal to all other labs that safety promises aren't important and commitments to the public don't need to be kept," said PauseAI organizing director Ella Hughes, addressing the crowd, which had gradually swelled to around 60 people. "Right now, AI companies are less regulated than sandwich shops." There's a lot to worry about when it comes to AI. Economic disruption. Job displacement. Misinformation. Deepfakes. The annihilation of humanity as we know it. Focusing on the specific issue of the Google safety report is a way for PauseAI to push for a specific and attainable near-term change. About 30 minutes into the protest, several intrigued passers-by had joined the cause. After a rousing speech from Hughes, the group proceeded to Google DeepMind's offices, where the fake courtroom production played out. Some Google employees leaving for the day looked bemused as chants of "Stop the race, it's unsafe" and "Test, don't guess" rang out. "AI regulation on an international level is in a very bad place," PauseAI founder Joep Meindertsma told Business Insider, pointing to how US Vice President JD Vance warned against over-regulating AI at the AI Action Summit. Monday was the first time PauseAI had gathered over this specific issue, and it's not clear what comes next. The group is engaging with members of UK parliament who will run these concerns up the flagpole, but Meindertsma is reticent to say much about how Google is engaging with the group and their demands (a Google spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment for this story). Meindertsma hopes support will grow and references polls that suggest the public at large is concerned that AI is moving too fast. The group on Monday was made up of people from different backgrounds, including some who work in tech. Meindertsma himself runs a software development company and regularly uses AI tools from Google, OpenAI, and others. "Their tools are incredibly impressive," he said, "which is the thing that worries me so much."

ICAIRE, Microsoft Launch 2nd Phase of 'Elevate Initiative' to Train 5,000 Women in AI

The International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE), headquartered in Riyadh, has announced the launch of the second cohort of its Elevate Initiative , in collaboration with Microsoft and under the sponsorship of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA). This new phase aims to train 5,000 women worldwide in artificial intelligence, following the success of the first cohort, which equipped 1,000 women with foundational AI skills. The program forms part of ICAIRE's broader mission to build AI capacity among 25,000 women across the globe. The announcement was made by ICAIRE Acting Managing Director Dr. Abdulrahman Habib during a dialogue session at the third annual UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of AI, held this year in Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Habib also emphasized ICAIRE's leadership in ethical AI research, its role in shaping policy recommendations, and its commitment to fostering global dialogue around responsible AI development. He highlighted inclusivity as a critical factor in driving innovation and expanding the intellectual landscape in AI. Moreover, increasing female representation in the AI sector, he said, is essential—and the Elevate Initiative plays a key role in making that vision a reality. The program offers a six-week, 26-hour curriculum that combines interactive courses, hands-on workshops, and mentorship from certified experts. Additionally, participants will receive a certificate of attendance and a scholarship to take the Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-900) certification exam.
