Under-fire Marquez quits as India football head coach

Embattled India football head coach Manolo Marquez stepped down on Wednesday after reaching a 'mutual agreement' with the All India Football Federation (AIFF), which was under pressure to fix accountability for the recent downward spiral of the national team. The AIFF Executive Committee, in its meeting here, agreed to relieve the 56-year-old Marquez after he expressed his desire to do so despite one year still left in his contract. 'The AIFF and Manolo decided to mutually part ways without any financial implications to any of the two parties. So, he is relieved from being India coach. The AIFF will shortly advertise for the post of head coach,' AIFF Deputy Secretary General K Satyanarayana told PTI. The Spaniard was appointed as head coach in June 2024 for a two-year tenure. He worked in a dual role last year as he was also the head coach of Indian Super League side FC Goa in 2024-25 season. India lost 0-1 to lower-ranked Hong Kong in an away match of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers on June 10, which left the country in danger of missing out on qualifying for the continental showpiece in 2027. India logged just one win from their last eight matches under Marquez's tutelage, the lone victory coming against Maldives in March. This year, India have so far played four matches, out of which they have won one, drew another, and lost two. The poor results prompted the return of former skipper and iconic striker Sunil Chhetri to the squad but that has done little to improve the team's fortunes.

Manolo Marquez quits as India football head coach

Manolo Marquez's stint as the head coach of the Indian football team has come to an end after he and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) mutually agreed to part ways. The AIFF Executive Committee, in a meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday (July 2, 2025), agreed to relieve Manolo after he expressed his desire to step away. The development comes after India lost 0-2 to Thailand in a friendly on June 4 and followed it with a 0-1 loss against Hong Kong in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers on June 10. 'We are sad. The dressing room is like a funeral. I am very angry and disappointed with everyone. I do not have words for this poor performance. Maybe this is the reality of Indian football,' the Spaniard said after the defeat to Hong Kong. Manolo Marquez took charge in July 2024, replacing Igor Stimac, and has overseen eight matches so far, with three losses and four draws. India's only win in his tenure came in a friendly against Maldives (3-0) in March. The 56-year-old was at the helm of the Indian team while juggling a dual role as the coach of FC Goa in the Indian Super League. His stint with the Gaurs concluded on May 31 with the Super Cup win in Bhubaneswar. AIFF will now look to appoint a new coach before India, which dropped to 127th in the FIFA rankings from 99th in July 2023, takes on Singapore on October 9.

Beleaguered Manolo Marquez quits as India's football head coach after mutual agreement with AIFF

The poor results prompted the return of former skipper and iconic striker Sunil Chhetri to the squad but that has done little to improve the team's fortunes. India's next scheduled international match is an away fixture against Singapore in the third round of Asian Cup qualifiers. According to sources, Marquez, who took over from Croatian Igor Stimac, had informed the AIFF his desire to quit sometime back — even before the June 10 match against Hong Kong — but could not do so unilaterally as he needed an agreement with the AIFF. Marquez has been one of the longest serving foreign coaches in Indian football, having managed multiple Indian clubs. He has secured trophies, including the Super Cup and the ISL Cup. His tenure of one year is the shortest among Indian head coaches in the last decade — Stephen Constantine was India head coach from 2015–2019 before Igor Stimac (2019-2024).

'It's been disastrous': Bhaichung Bhutia slams AIFF chief Kalyan Chaubey, latter calls it 'baseless allegations'

Kalyan Chaubey has responded to Baichung Bhutia's comments, labelling them as baseless allegations (Image via X/@AllIndiaFtbl & IFTWC) Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia has launched a stinging attack on All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Kalyan Chaubey, accusing him of mismanagement and corruption that he says have pushed Indian football backwards both on and off the field. Speaking to PTI, Bhutia did not hold back in his assessment of Chaubey's tenure, saying ' I don't need to say much. I think the entire football fans in India are aware of what has happened in the last three years — it's been disastrous, not just on the field but off the field also. It's just been a disastrous and bad management of the football federation under Kalyan Chaubey ,' Bhutia said. The 48-year-old, however, ruled himself out and added that he hoped "somebody nice who can take the game forward would come and run the Football federation." Bhutia's comments come at a time when India's football scene has faced mounting criticism over inconsistent performances, administrative challenges, and concerns about accountability and transparency. Chaubey dismisses 'baseless allegations' In an official statement, AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey addressed the claims of corruption and poor governance. He also wrote, 'We live in a democratic country where every citizen has the constitutional right to freedom of speech. As a member of the AIFF Executive Committee, Mr. Bhaichung Bhutia has access to an appropriate and empowered platform to express his views, raise concerns, and contribute constructively towards the development and performance of Indian football in the various AIFF Executive Committee meetings. ' Poll Do you agree with Bhaichung Bhutia's criticism of AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey? Yes, I completely agree No, I disagree While Bhutia's blunt remarks have reignited debate about the direction and governance of Indian football, Chaubey appealed for unity and a collective push forward. He also stressed that Bhutia has ' consistently and deliberately made baseless allegations and presented a distorted image of the AIFF ." The President exclaimed that such actions not only tarnish the reputation of the Federation, but also throw Indian football in a negative light on international platforms. Moreover, the AIFF President has also 'welcomed' Bhutia to contest in the upcoming AIFF Executive Committee Meeting scheduled for July 2, 2025, and that 'he is encouraged to present any constructive proposals during the meeting, which will duly be deliberated upon by the entire executive board'.
