Malaysia boosts AIPA 2025 leadership through Thailand parliamentary talks
BANGKOK: Malaysia has reinforced its leadership role in ASEAN parliamentary diplomacy as Dewan Rakyat Speaker and AIPA 2025 President Tan Sri Johari Abdul met Thai Parliament Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha. The discussions focused on enhancing regional legislative cooperation ahead of Malaysia's AIPA chairmanship next year. Johari described the meeting as a strategic move toward a more inclusive and resilient ASEAN. Wan Muhamad Noor pledged Thailand's full support for Malaysia's AIPA leadership and commended its successful hosting of key AIPA meetings, including the Women Parliamentarians' Meeting in Sarawak and the Young Parliamentarians' Meeting in Selangor. The Thai Speaker also emphasized the importance of the AIPA General Assembly as a platform for addressing global challenges, including the Palestine conflict and Iran's geopolitical tensions. He highlighted Thailand's readiness to celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations with Malaysia in 2027 and proposed deeper tourism cooperation. Wan Muhamad Noor welcomed the idea of inviting Malaysian MPs to Thailand to strengthen cross-cultural ties and parliamentary relations. This aligns with efforts to foster progressive regional leadership through legislative diplomacy.

Brunei's anti-drug efforts shared at regional parliamentary meeting

The Legislative Council (LegCo) was represented by Datuk Seri Setia Awang Suyoi Osman and Safiah Sheikh Abdul Salam, members of the LegCo. The meeting was officiated by Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Malaysia and President of AIPA Tan Sri Johari Abdul and was attended by over 50 delegates from the parliaments of Asean member states. The 8th AIPACODD meeting discussed the role of parliaments in shaping effective policies and emphasised collective cooperation among Asean member parliaments in combating the persistent threat of drugs, which continues to pose challenges to regional security, public health and well-being in realising the shared aspiration of a drug-free Asean. The delegation from Brunei Darussalam shared a report on the drug situation in the country and efforts in addressing drug abuse issues. The delegation also had the opportunity to exchange views on regional challenges, which were presented by representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Asean Senior Officials on Drug Matters (ASOD), as well as Malaysian enforcement and health agencies. The 8th AIPACODD meeting considered a draft resolution themed 'Uniting Parliaments for an Inclusive and Sustainable Asean in Addressing Contemporary Drug Challenges', which was agreed to be tabled at the 46th AIPA General Assembly scheduled to take place in September. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN

Pahang Offers Rich Cultural Experience To AIPA Delegation
GENERAL PEKAN, June 11 (Bernama) -- Pahang's unique culture, handicrafts and culinary offerings emerged as key highlights for the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) delegation during their four-day visit here. Sharing her experience at the Tunku Azizah Royal Craft Village in Pulau Keladi, AIPA Secretary-General Siti Rozaimeriyanty Abdul Rahman said the intricate art of Tenun Pahang Diraja stood out for its uniqueness compared to weaving traditions in other countries in the region. 'We can see a variety of handicrafts here, and as for the weaving, I noticed distinct differences in the patterns compared to those in other ASEAN countries,' she told reporters here. The visit was organised by the Malaysian Parliament in collaboration with the Pahang government, in conjunction with the 8th Meeting of the AIPA Advisory Council on Dangerous Drugs (AIPACODD) 2025, held in Kuantan from June 9 to 12. Meanwhile, Siti Rozaimeriyanty also expressed her appreciation to the Malaysian Parliament and the Pahang government for holding the AIPACODD meeting outside the federal capital, which allowed delegates to gain exposure to the local culture. 'For many of us, this was our first time visiting areas outside of Kuala Lumpur, and for some, their first visit to Kuantan. ASEAN is about cultural understanding and exchange,' she said. Commenting on the AIPACODD meeting, Siti Rozaimeriyanty said it was successfully held and concluded with two draft consensus papers to be presented at the upcoming AIPA General Assembly scheduled for September. She said the meeting played a key role in supporting ASEAN's efforts to become a drug-free region and in achieving its aspiration of becoming the world's fourth-largest economy. --BERNAMA

Over 70 delegates expected for Asean council meeting on drug menace next week
KUANTAN: Over 70 delegates from 10 Asean countries are expected to attend the 2025 Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Advisory Council on Dangerous Drugs Meeting in Pahang from Monday to Thursday (June 9 to 12). Pahang assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin said the meeting will be chaired by Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor. Sharkar said the meeting, themed "Uniting Parliaments for an Inclusive and Sustainable Asean in Addressing Contemporary Drug Challenges", would discuss member countries' commitment to collectively and inclusively tackling current dangerous drug-related challenges. ALSO READ: Cops beefing up security for Asean council meet "Our discussions will revolve around efforts to find solutions to ... drug trafficking as well as regional collaboration so that this issue does not worsen and we can curb or reduce related crimes,' he said when contacted on Friday (June 6). He also said the resolutions achieved at the meeting would be raised at the AIPA General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 17-22. On Tuesday (June 3), Pahang police chief Comm Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman was quoted as saying that police would step up security control to ensure the meeting proceeds smoothly. – Bernama
