Filipino seafarers repatriated after surviving Houthi attack in Red Sea

The Department of Migrant Workers said six Filipino seafarers who were aboard a cargo ship attacked by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea have safely returned to the Philippines on Friday. Three of the crew members from the MV Magic Seas arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 around 4:30 p.m., while the other three landed at Clark International Airport at approximately 4 p.m. The DMW, along with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), extended immediate support to the returning seafarers. Each was granted ₱75,000 in financial assistance through the DMW's AKSYON Fund and OWWA's Emergency Repatriation Fund. An additional ₱10,000 was provided by the DSWD. The MV Magic Seas, a Liberia-flagged bulk carrier manned by 17 Filipinos and two foreign nationals, a Romanian and a Vietnamese , was attacked while sailing in the Red Sea. The DMW assured the public that the government remains committed to supporting the reintegration of the affected seafarers and providing further assistance as needed.

6 Magic Seas crew members back in PH

Six of the 17 Filipino crew members of the ill-fated MV Magic Seas returned to the Philippines on Friday, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said. The ship's chief officer, 2nd officer, and 3rd officer arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1, while the rest landed at Clark International Airport. The seafarers received financial assistance worth P75,000 each from DMW's AKSYON Fund and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration's Emergency Repatriation Fund and P10,000 each from the Department of Social Welfare and Development. They were also given hotel accommodation and transportation assistance to ensure their safe return to their families and communities. DMW earlier reported that the Filipino seafarers, along with two other crew members, escaped the Liberian-flagged vessel they were boarding, which was under attack by alleged Houthi rebels last Saturday. Magic Seas was about 51 nautical miles southwest of Hodeidah, Yemen, when it was attacked by men carrying rocket-propelled grenades and automatic firearms. —VBL, GMA Integrated News

25 more OFWs from Israel back in Philippines — DMW

Twenty-five overseas Filipino caregivers from Israel have returned safely to the Philippines and reunited with their families after availing of the government's voluntary repatriation program. According to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), they arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 on July 6. The repatriation was part of the ongoing effort of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to ensure the safety and welfare of Filipinos abroad, especially amid the continuing Iran-Israel conflict. The returning OFWs were welcomed by a whole-of-government team led by Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac. "Nag-aalala ang Pangulo sa kalagayan ninyo, pero masaya na siya na nakauwi na kayo. At bilin niya ay mahalagang makarating ang tulong ng gobyerno sa inyo. Kaya ang hiling namin ay gamitin ng wasto ang financial assistance," Cacdac was quoted in a statement as saying. (The President is worried about your situation, but he's happy now that you're home. He instructed us to make sure government aid reaches you. So we ask that you use the financial assistance wisely.) The DMW, together with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) headed by Administrator PY Caunan, provided financial aid to the returnees through key programs such as the AKSYON Fund and the Emergency Repatriation Fund. In addition, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) extended separate cash assistance. The repatriated workers also received TESDA training vouchers for skills upgrading, medical checkups, and health referrals from the Department of Health (DOH). Medical teams from the DOH and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) provided immediate health screenings upon arrival. "Mabuti na lang po may financial assistance na binigay sa amin, magagamit namin ito sa pagtatayo ng maliit na negosyo," said OFW Nelizza Baldrias from Calaca, Batangas. (It's a good thing we were given financial assistance; we can use it to start a small business.) The 25 caregivers are part of the 39th batch of OFWs repatriated from Israel under the Marcos administration's voluntary repatriation initiative. A total of 72 Filipinos have returned from Israel since tensions flared in the region. Since October 2023, a total of 1,405 Filipino migrant workers have been repatriated under President Marcos Jr.'s directive, as the government continues to prioritize the protection and reintegration of overseas Filipinos. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

13 OFWs from Israel safely return to the Philippines

Thirteen overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), composed of caregivers and a hotel worker, safely returned to the Philippines from Israel on July 4, 2025. They arrived at NAIA Terminal 1 in Pasay City, part of the government's ongoing repatriation program for distressed OFWs in the Middle East. Following the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the returning workers are receiving reintegration support that includes livelihood aid, health and welfare assistance, and TESDA training vouchers to help them start anew in the country. The OFWs were welcomed by a team representing several government agencies, led by DMW Undersecretary Dominique Rubia-Tutay and Assistant Secretary Maria Angela Galias. They were joined by officials from OWWA, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the MIAA Medical Team. Undersecretary Tutay acknowledged the challenges these workers endured in the conflict-affected areas of Israel and emphasized the government's commitment to providing full support during their reintegration. Upon arrival, the OFWs underwent health checks and were given financial assistance through various government funds and programs including DMW's AKSYON Fund, OWWA's Emergency Repatriation Fund, and DSWD aid. One of the repatriates, 51-year-old caregiver Josephine Sanglitan Sandoi from Davao City, recounted her traumatic experience of surviving a missile strike that injured some of her colleagues. This group is part of Batch 38-B, bringing the total number of recently repatriated OFWs from Israel to 21 under the DMW-led voluntary repatriation initiative. 'Your safety is our President's top concern. Welcome back, dear Kababayan!' said Undersecretary Tutay.
