French Expression of the Day: Affection longue durée
Why do I need to know affection longue durée? Well, you don't want to get the wrong end of the stick if your GP mentions it. What does it mean? Affection longue durée – pronounced affec-syon long dyour-ray - might sound like it's a long-lasting friendship or a romantic entanglement that goes on for a long time. But in fact in French affection is a tricky word - it can be used in the same way as in English to mean feeling warm, friendly or loving towards a person. Un sentiment d'affection or un sens d'affection would describe the feeling. But une affection means an ailment or a medical condition. But the phrase affection longue durée - literally translating as a long-lasting illness - has a very specific meaning. Often referred to by the initialisation ALD, it is the umbrella term for a range of long-term or chronic conditions that require prolonged treatment - ranging from diabetes and asthma to stroke and heart disease, taking in illnesses such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's, and paraplegia. It also takes in infertility treatments for women, celiac disease and help for deaf children. The definition is important because a nyone with a recognised ALD may be entitled to up to 100 percent of the cost of related care covered by the healthcare system. In fact, there's a list – known as the ALD 30 – of conditions that qualify for this level of reimbursement. It's a non-exhaustive list, as today additional conditions are recognised as requiring care lasting more than six months. Having an ALD may also entitle you to certain benefits or financial aid, so if you have an illness that you think qualifies you, it's well worth talking to your doctor about getting the official ALD designation. GHIAL acquires 70% stake in ESR GMR Logistics Park
GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Airports Limited, has acquired a 70% stake in ESR GMR Logistics Park Private Limited (EGLPPL), thereby assuming full ownership of the company. The remaining 30% stake in EGLPPL was already held by GMR Hyderabad Aerotropolis Limited. (GHAL), a wholly owned subsidiary of GHIAL. With this acquisition, GHIAL, directly and through GHAL, now holds 100% equity in EGLPPL, converting it into a wholly owned subsidiary. EGLPPL was originally established on January 8, 2020, with the objective of developing warehousing and logistics parks in Hyderabad. The company has since developed approximately 1.7 million square feet of industrial and logistics infrastructure, said a release. GHIAL stated that this acquisition aligns with its long-term Airport Land Development (ALD) strategy, aimed at expanding the airport's role beyond aviation to drive broader economic activity through the creation of an Aerotropolis. 'Hyderabad Airport was envisioned not just as an aviation gateway, but as the catalyst for a thriving Aerotropolis, a future-forward ecosystem designed to enhance connectivity, boost economic activity, and drive holistic regional development. Who qualifies for free-at-point-of-delivery healthcare in France?
Yes, it is not actually free. It is paid for in taxes and social charges, and most of us will contribute via deductions from earnings. But while most medical care in France is done via a reimbursement model, sometimes there is 'free at the point of delivery' care. This is known as tiers payant (third-party payment) and it means the medical costs are paid directly via national insurance system - rather than the more common model of the patient paying the doctor or pharmacist upfront and then being reimbursed some or all of the cost later via the state Assurance maladie model. Because it's France, this is complicated, but essentially there are some groups of people covered by the tiers payant system for all of their medical costs, then there are certain treatments that come under tiers payant , for everyone.
