Mumbai civic body rolls out Rs 71cr Powai Lake clean-up tender work

Mumbai: Mumbai: Following repeated demands from concerned citizens and environmentalists, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) allotted the civil work on diverting the sewer water flow from Powai Lake and floated a tender for setting up a treatment plant near the site at a cost of over Rs 71 crore. Members of the BMC-appointed Advanced Locality Management Committee and NatConnect Foundation launched a joint campaign focusing attention on the deterioration of Powai Lake due to the direct inflow of untreated waste of 18 million litres a day. "The BMC officials have now met the Powai residents and informed us that the tender process of diverting the sewer line has been launched. This is good news for the lake,"said Pamela Cheema of the Save Powai Lake group. The lake, with abundant biodiversity has been covered with hyacinth, which the BMC failed to check despite a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order, following which the public awareness campaign was launched addressing the chief minister and BMC commissioner. "We are happy that commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has directed his team led by additional commissioner Abhijit Bangar, and the process of tender work to divert the sewer away from the lake has started," said NatConnect director B N Kumar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure your family's future! ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo The work on laying sewer pipelines was allotted to Swastik Constructions following an e-tender, papers given to ALM members at a meeting at S Ward on Friday. Stating that better late than never, ALM Chairperson Pamela Cheema remarked that the people of Powai are anxiously awaiting the speedy execution of the lake clean-up. The work is slated to start on July 21 with an 18-month deadline. In a related development, the civic body floated an e-tender for Rs 68.88 crore STP at Powai. The bids were to be opened on June 30, and details are awaited, said Milan Bhatt, an ALM member. BMC, meanwhile, commissioned harvester machines to clear the hyacinth following public pressure. But this measure proved to be grossly inadequate as the vegetation grew rapidly due to the continuous draining of sewer, NatConnect said. The end-to-end hyacinth sheet over the lake prevents the sun rays from penetrating the lake, thus badly impacting aquatic life. Meanwhile, NatConnect has taken up the dire state of Powai Lake with the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), which in turn asked the state environment director to take necessary action.

Aloisi to continue as Western United coach

Socceroos legend John Aloisi has signed a two-year contract extension to remain as coach of embattled A-League Men outfit Western United. The fresh deal comes amid the ongoing saga surrounding United's future, with parent company Western Melbourne Group seeking to finalise a sale of the financially-stricken club to American investors. United are also looking to replace leading scorer Noah Botic, who earnt a move to Austrian Bundesliga outfit Austria Vienna through his dazzling ALM form last season. Aloisi led United to a semi-final appearance last season, when they were knocked out by eventual champions Melbourne City. The 49-year-old first took the reins at United in 2021 and steered the club to the ALM championship the following year. Now entering his fifth season in charge, he is the longest-serving coach in the club's short history. "I still see so much growth left on and off the pitch and I can't wait to continue this journey together as a club, with the support of our fans who have stuck by us through the highs and the lows," Aloisi said. "First season at Ironbark last season, and we already started to make it our fortress. "It was so special to play there in front of our home fans and I'm eager to see them all there again cheering our boys on. "I am super excited to continue working with this group of players. "We played some great attacking football last season and I know this group is still hungry to keep learning and improving." United, drawn to host Sydney FC in the Australia Cup round of 32 on July 29, are the last ALM club to appoint a head coach for the 2025-26 season. The make-up of Aloisi's coaching staff remains unclear, following the departure of assistant coach Andrew Durante last week. Durante has joined cross-town rivals Melbourne Victory as an assistant to Arthur Diles.

For improved patient care, city docs form lab med group

Kolkata: Doctors specialising in different streams of laboratory diagnosis and treatment came together in Kolkata to launch the Association of Laboratory Medicine (ALM) on Wednesday to enhance patient care in the city. While biochemistry, pathology, microbiology and transfusion medicine come under laboratory medicine, an umbrella body was the need of the hour as these specialists need collaboration for better patient care. The newly launched umbrella organisation includes doctors Tamal Kanti Ghosh, Pradip Mitra, Sankar Sengupta, Susutra Sen, SM Nadeem, Debasish Bhattacharya and Ashvini Sengupta among others, to outline ALM's academic and research work. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata During the launch, doctors said the Covid pandemic taught them the importance of working cohesively and the need to share knowledge for better patient services. They also mentioned that during a public health crisis, an umbrella body of laboratory medicine can help bring up specific guidelines. ALM will also work towards setting up reference standards specific to the population here, as most of these at present are international standards.
