Two cops among five killed in horrific accident along N3 in Durban

Two police officers were among five people killed on Friday after a minibus taxi plunged down a 50m embankment on the N3, near Shongweni West, Durban. KwaZulu-Natal's Transport and Human Settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma, said Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officials established that a 'reckless Polo driver caused the horrific accident' on the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg just after 17:00. According to the RTI, a minibus taxi carrying 17 passengers was travelling to Ixopo when it veered off the road and rolled down the embankment. Duma said truck drivers who witnessed the accident said the taxi driver was allegedly trying to avoid a reckless Polo driver when he lost control of the taxi. The RTI team, Durban metro police, the Road Traffic Management Corporation and the South African police are reconstructing the accident as part of the investigation. 'At this stage, we are trying to locate the families of the deceased. Three passengers are in a serious condition, and nine others sustained minor injuries. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,' said Duma. Garrith Jamieson, of ALS Paramedics, said the incident occurred just before 17:00 on Friday. 'First responders arrived on the scene to find chaos and carnage as they found the taxi and a light motor vehicle had collided before the taxi lost control and rolled down the embankment,' said Jamieson. He said paramedics made their way down to the taxi and began setting up a triage station. 'Unfortunately, five people had sustained major injuries and there was nothing paramedics could do for them and they were declared deceased on the scene. 'Thirteen other passengers had sustained various injuries, ranging from moderate to critical, and while paramedics worked to stabilise them, the rescue teams made up of Durban Metro Police Search and Rescue, the eThekwini Fire Department and Mobiclaw began setting up a complicated roping system to bring the injured up to awaiting ambulances,' said Jamieson. He said those injured had been transported to various Durban hospitals for further care.

Five dead including 2 policemen after taxi plunges down 50m embankment

Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics said responders made their way down the embankment to the taxi and found five people had sustained major injuries and were declared dead at the scene. He said they set up a triage station and treated 13 other passengers who sustained various injuries ranging from moderate to critical. In the interim rescue teams made up of Durban Metro Police search and rescue, Ethekweni fire department and Mobiclaw members set up a roping system to bring the injured up to awaiting ambulances. 'After three hours all of the injured were rescued and transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required. The scene then turned into a recovery operation.' Duma said the accident happened shortly after the launch of the Durban July and Winter Holiday Road Safety Campaign. 'I have mandated the RTI team to sustain the 'No Nonsense, Zero Tolerance, and Alufakwa Campaign. We remain worried about reports that show that most road accidents happen in winter and at night.' The Road Traffic Management Corporation published the following national fatalities for the previous years: June 2021 — 902 road fatalities. June 2022 — 873 road fatalities. June 2023 — 833 road fatalities. June 2024 -923 road fatalities. TimesLIVE

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the crash occurred just after 5pm and first responders arrived on the scene to find chaos and carnage. 'Paramedics made their way down to the taxi and began setting up a triage station. It took rescuers three hours to rescue all the injured people and transport them to various Durban hospitals for additional care that they required, he stated. Jamieson said the scene then turned into a recovery operation. At 11pm, MEC Duma said he received a final accident report from a team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI). The recovery of five bodies has been completed, according to Duma, and one of them is a female police officer in full uniform. 'A few hours after our successful multidisciplinary roadblock, a reckless Polo driver has caused a horrific accident,' he said. Duma said, according to the RTI team, the minibus taxi was carrying 17 passengers travelling to Ixopo. Truck drivers who witnessed the accident reported that the taxi driver lost control while attempting to avoid the reckless Polo driver, he stated. The MEC said the RTI team, working with Durban Metro Police, Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), and the South African Police Service, will reconstruct the accident as part of the investigation. At this stage, Duma said authorities are trying to locate the families of the deceased. 'Three passengers are in a serious condition, and nine others sustained minor injuries. They have been taken to R.K. Khan Hospital,' he said. Duma added that the department remains concerned about reports indicating that most road accidents occur in winter and at night. Duma said national fatalities published by the RTMC showed that there were 902 fatalities in June 2021, 873 in June 2022, 833 in June 2023, and 923 in June 2024. Duma offered condolences to the families of the victims and wished those in hospital a speedy recovery. 'We salute the emergency personnel, RTI, eThekwini metro police, and rescue teams for their dedication,' he stated.

Security guard shot in patron fight at Durban pub

A security guard was shot and wounded in an attempt to disarm a patron at a popular Durban pub on Friday night. Pinto's Hillcrest said the shooting occurred at 10.30pm after an argument broke out among customers. 'A middle-aged patron was asked to leave by security after an argument broke out between customers. He left the property as instructed by security. Security assumed he had left, [but] he went to his vehicle and returned with a firearm. 'Security noticed the man returning and intercepted the patron, at which time they attempted to grab the firearm in defence. A single shot was discharged, hitting and wounding one security officer. The patron immediately exited the building and left the premises, and all necessary personnel were contacted.' ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the man was in a critical condition when emergency services arrived on the scene. 'Just before 11pm ALS Paramedics responded to multiple calls for assistance. Paramedics arrived on the scene to find multiple security personnel as well as the police in attendance and were shown to the wounded patient. 'The male, believed to be in his 30s, had allegedly been shot in the abdomen after an altercation with a patron. The man was in a critical condition and he was stabilised on the scene by advanced life support paramedics before he was taken to hospital for urgent care.' TimesLIVE
