Red-hot Arellano, Perpetual rout foes to keep playoffs hopes alive
On-fire Arellano University and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA dominated their respective opponents to stay on course in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Saturday. The Chiefs rolled to their fourth straight win via a 92-76 win against the winless San Sebastian College-Recoletos while the ALTAs crushed the struggling Lyceum of the Philippines University, 94-79. Arellano, still on a high following three consecutive victories over defending champion Mapua, San Beda, and LPU, flexed its depth and might with King Vinoya leading the charge with 21 points, three steals, two rebounds, and an assist as they improved to 5-3. Second-generation baller Dre Miller, meanwhile, chipped in 10 markers to help the Chiefs momentarily take the fourth spot. The rebuilding Stags ended their campaign with a tough 0-9 card as new head coach Rob Labagala continued to revive San Sebastian's basketball program. In the second game, Perpetual has turned its fortunes around in the preseason showcase after earning its third win in a row to hike its record to 4-4 while the Pirates slipped to 1-6. Guard Shawn Orgo showed the way with 14 points laced with four assists, two rebounds, and two steals while transferee Josh Alcantara and veteran John Abis chipped in 11 and 10 markers apiece. Perpetual star KC Andrade joins powerhouse Cignal in Spikers' Turf
KC Andrade is taking his winning attitude to the next level as he joined a star-studded Cignal HD Spikers team in the 2025 Spikers' Turf competition. The former University of Perpetual Help System DALTA middle blocker is the latest addition to the HD Spikers alongside other recruits in opposite spiker Jayrack Dela Noche, outside hitter Vince Maglinao, and Filipino-Canadian libero Lhexen Rabit. Andrade is a proven winner in college, helping the ALTAs clinch a historic four-peat title run in NCAA Season 99, where he was named Best Middle Blocker together with Letran's Vince Himzon. In the previous Season 100, Andrade and the ALTAs finished joint fifth with an identical 10-8 record with San Beda University. 'We're looking to continue to build on the Cignal HD brand of excellence for men's volleyball,' said HD Spikers head coach Dexter Clamor. Andrade, Dela Noche, Maglinao, and Rabit will bolster an already-stacked Cignal roster that features the likes of Bryan Bagunas, JP Bugaoan, Lloyd Josafat, Joshua Retamar, and Joshua Umandal. Perpetual outlasts JRU to remain in Final Four race
NCAA The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA outlasted Jose Rizal University, 24-26, 25-18, 27-29, 25-22, 15-12, in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball tournament on Friday at the Filoil Centre in San Juan. With the victory, the ALTAs remained in the hunt for a Final Four slot as they improved to 9-7, while the gritty Heavy Bombers moved to 3-14. As both teams tried to claim the win, the fifth set happened to also be a tight one with JRU and Perpetual tied at 12 before the ALTAs made the late rally. Blocks were crucial in the final stretch as it eventually sealed the victory for Perpetual. Kobe Brian Taguba and Jeff Marapoc led the Las Piñas crew with the former having 26 points from 19 attacks, six blocks, and an ace, while the latter had 22 points from 21 attacks and an ace, to go with 17 receptions and 11 digs. Kirth Patrick Rosos added 14 points, while John Lituania had 19 excellent sets. Paolo Barrientos had 22 points anchored built on 19 attacks, two blocks, and an ace, while Harry Ocay had 21 points for JRU. Klause Dais had 23 excellent sets as Matthew Malilin and Jake Fernandez chipped in 16 and 10 points, respectively. Perpetual's next games are crucial for their five-peat hopes as they will take on contenders De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde on Sunday and San Beda University on Wednesday.
