AP CM orders swift action on outsourcing staff issues, stresses urban hygiene

Vijayawada:Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday directed officials of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) department to immediately resolve issues related to outsourcing employees. He sought complete details after reports emerged that several areas in Visakhapatnam were affected by water supply disruptions due to a strike by outsourcing staff. Officials informed the Chief Minister that the issue in Visakhapatnam had been resolved with the active involvement of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) officials. Naidu instructed MA&UD Minister P Narayana to convene a cabinet sub-committee meeting to focus on resolving the matter at the earliest. He emphasised the importance of ensuring uninterrupted services, especially during a season when the spread of infectious diseases is more likely. The chief minister advised prioritising cleanliness in urban areas and taking immediate preventive measures against infectious diseases. He highlighted the need to combat the mosquito menace and ensure the availability of safe drinking water. He directed officials to identify vulnerable areas where water contamination could occur and take action to prevent any outbreaks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Profit Trick - Read More vividtrendlab Click Here Undo Naidu also stressed the need to improve air quality in urban areas. He asked officials to ensure that roads are cleaned daily using mechanized sweeping machines to curb dust pollution. He emphasized proper disposal of poultry waste and maintaining high standards of hygiene at Anna Canteens. He urged urban local bodies to become self-reliant in generating power, including for streetlighting. Additionally, Naidu instructed officials to secure maximum funds under various centrally-sponsored schemes in the municipal sector. He criticised the previous government for failing to provide the state's share in many schemes, which led to the loss of central funds. He called for the revival of all centrally sponsored schemes and the expedited implementation of projects funded by Rs 5,800 crore from the Asian Infrastructure and Investment Bank (AIIB) and Rs 3,000 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission. He stressed there should be no delays in executing projects under AMRUT, AMRUT 2.0, AIIB, and the Urban Infrastructure Development Fund (UIDF).

Misal urges PMC to address property tax disparity in newly merged villages

Praising the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for collecting Rs 950 crore in property tax, Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal on Thursday urged the civic body to revise its tax system to address the disparity between rates in the newly merged 34 villages and the city's old limits. 'Property owners in the 34 merged villages have demanded a revision in tax rates, which are much more than the amount they used to pay earlier. The disparity in tax rates has led to opposition to PMC's tax system by property owners in the newly merged villages. I have asked the PMC to revise the system to address the disparity and send a proposal to the state government for approval,' said Misal. During a review meeting on civic issues, Misal said, 'The PMC is not able to collect expected revenue from property tax from the newly merged villages as owners there are opposed to tax rates and feel it has increased the financial burden on them.' The minister also reviewed civic projects and said the PMC is implementing two disaster management initiatives with funds from the Centre. Under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, the civic body is carrying out several sewage treatment and water supply projects. She said the PMC is also working to develop 4,500 affordable houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and is exploring land availability for them. In addition, the PMC is preparing to set up a 50-MW solar power plant to meet its electricity needs, and has proposed the purchase of 200 new electric buses for PMPML. Several projects under the National Clean Air Programme have also been initiated, Misal added.

Building Pune: PMC to enhance sewage treatment capacity to ensure clean water discharge into Mula-Mutha river

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which is struggling to treat the sewage generated within its jurisdiction and ensure clean water is released into the Mula-Mutha River, is set to enhance the sewage treatment facilities. The initiative that is aimed at meeting the projected demand of 1,092 million litres per day (MLD) for sewage treatment by 2027 will be developed through a Rs 842 crore fund, including Rs 506 crore approved by the Centre under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. Currently, around 92 per cent of Pune city is covered through a sewerage network that spans 2,200 kilometres, which includes six intermediate pumping stations and 10 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). The cumulative treatment capacity of these plants is 567 MLD. However, the old STP at Naidu Hospital with a capacity of 90 MLD is demolished for the reconstruction of a 127 MLD plant. Hence, the effective treatment capacity is 477 MLD. This capacity will be increased by 396 MLD after the ongoing new STP projects funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are completed by 2027. 'The PMC plans to increase the capacity further with 10 MLD in the old city area, 12 MLD in the newly merged 11 villages, and 82 MLD in 23 merged villages. This will increase the sewage treatment capacity to 977 MLD by 2027 as against the estimated generation of 1,092 MLD to meet the requirement of the 70 lakh population of the city,' said Manisha Shekatkar, Chief Engineer of the PMC. Under the AMRUT scheme, the State and Central Governments are to bear 50 per cent of the expenses. With the population expected to rise to 92 lakh in 2037, the sewage treatment capacity for the city is estimated to be 1,450 MLD. By 2047, the capacity should be 1,072 MLD to cater to a population of 1.1 crores. As part of the plans under AMRUT 2.0, he said the existing STP of 130 MLD at Bhairoba, constructed in 2003, will be demolished to develop a new STP of 200 MLD capacity. The STP at Tanajiwadi will be demolished to make way for a new 26 MLD STP and enhancement of 18 MLD STP to 28 MLD STP at Bopodi. Upgrades will also be carried out at 115 MLD STP at New Naidu, 50 MLD STP at Erandwane, and 32 MLD STP at Vithalwadi. 'The objective is to ensure that the treated wastewater is able to meet the discharge parameters, extend the life of existing STPs, and improves the quality of treated wastewater for reuse and implement green initiatives by developing a compressed biogas system for large capacity STPs,' she said. Civic activist Vivek Velankar said there are new standards set for treated sewage water, which has to be maintained by the civic body. He expressed concern over the lack of capacity to treat the entire sewage generated, as the untreated water goes into the river. 'The city consumes around 1,800 MLD of water. So sewage generated will be at least 1,500 MLD, but the PMC estimate is well below the actual consumption of domestic water in the city. Moreover, the PMC is somehow approaching its estimated wastewater generation in 2027, which means some amount of untreated water will continue to be released into the river and pollute the water body. In reality, water consumption is going to increase with the rise in population. Hence, the PMC should plan for the next 20 years from now rather than for just two years,' he said. Rs 8,000 crore plan in works to clean Yamuna, fix drainage: Delhi CM

The Delhi government is currently working on more than 300 projects, allocated an outlay of Rs 8,000 crore, to clean Yamuna River and solve the city's sewage woes, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Friday. Gupta held a meeting with Water Minister Parvesh Verma and top Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials to review the work underway to fix the drainage and sewer system in the city. "The Delhi government is implementing a multi-pronged and phased plan for Yamuna rejuvenation, which includes drain treatment, sewerage network expansion and setting up of modern Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs)," the chief minister said in a statement. In the meeting, according to the statement, she reviewed a 45-point action plan, which included capacity enhancement and upgradation work at existing STPs located in Yamuna Vihar, Okhla, Keshopur, Vasant Kunj, Ghitorni, Mehrauli, and Molarbandh under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme and one each in Nilothi and Pappan Kalan. Gupta directed officials to replace old pipelines in phases. "Many parts of Delhi are still operating on decades-old water and sewer pipelines, which are no longer sustainable due to rapid urban growth and increasing demand. Officials have been instructed to undertake phase-wise planning and use modern technology to replace old infrastructure," she said. According to officials, the 303 drainage projects involve redevelopment of major drains, permanent solutions for waterlogging, installation of modern pumps, de-silting of drains, expansion of stormwater systems, and scientific drainage network management. Gupta said she will personally visit the Yamuna every month to check the progress in its cleaning. She also claimed that Delhi will soon become a 'model' city in terms of equitable water distribution under the Centre's Har Ghar Nal Se Jal initiative. Verma stated that strict directions have been issued for immediate action against the illegal discharge of untreated sewage and industrial waste in the city. "This is a crisis that can no longer be ignored. Delhi cannot afford to let untreated sewage flow into its lifelines. No polluter will be spared. We will act and act fast," he said.
