Integrated ops on e-cigarettes, vapes to kick off on Aug 1, says Health Ministry

IPOH: An integrated enforcement operation on electronic cigarettes (e-cigarette) and vapes will be launched on Aug 1, says the Health Ministry. In a statement Tuesday, the ministry said 'Operation Safe Lungs (Ops Selamat PaPa)' will involve various agencies, including the police, Customs Department, the National Kenaf and Tobacco Board, local authorities and non-governmental organisations. "The operation is to ensure that the law is enforced effectively and the country's environment is safer and free from the threat of smoking products including e-cigarettes or vapes. "We call on all parties, whether government, enforcement agencies, NGOs or the community, to jointly support and strengthen this effort to protect the health of current and future generations in line with the aspirations of the values of Madani for sustainability, wellbeing and kindness," the statement read. "This is also an important step in the effort to realise the Malaysia Sihat National Agenda (ANMS)," the statement added. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad had, in a press conference in Parliament on Monday (July 28), said the government was committed in the implementation of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act. The Act, he noted, encompasses comprehensive controls covering product registration requirements, advertising, promotion and sponsorship bans, sales control, and smoking bans in restricted areas. Dr Dzulkefly also said the ministry would consider a nationwide ban on the use and sale of e-cigarettes or vapes. On the decision by the Johor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, Kedah and Pahang governments not to renew or issue licences to e-cigarette or vape sellers, the spokesman said the move was welcomed by the ministry. The spokesman said the decision by the six states was in line with aspirations of the country to protect the public from the threat of cigarettes. "The step taken is progressive and supports the efforts towards controlling the use of e-cigarettes or vape. "Existing measures are still limited to certain types of premises and yet do not cover all premises, including retail or convenience stores," the spokesman said. "For more comprehensive control, especially in the agenda towards a complete ban on the sale and use of e-cigarettes or vapes, it is still under the authority of the Federal Government," the spokesman added.

Health Ministry flags diabetes risk as screening hits nearly 889,000

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 888,626 individuals have undergone health screening under the National Health Screening Initiative (NHSI) as of July 11. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said individuals identified as being at risk of diabetes would be referred to health clinics for further diagnosis and treatment. He said the Health Ministry had rolled out several nationwide initiatives to ensure that high-risk groups have access to screening services. "The NHSI initiative is targeted at citizens aged 18 and above. The public can undergo this screening at any health facility through an appointment made via the MySejahtera app. "Individuals identified as at-risk for diabetes will be referred to a health clinic for diagnosis confirmation and further treatment. As of July 11, a total of 888,626 individuals have undergone health screening under this NHSI initiative this year. "Collaboration has also been established with private health clinics registered under the PeKa B40 scheme, a government initiative under the Health Ministry that provides free health screening services to the low-income group, focusing on early detection of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). "The expansion of health screening programmes is also carried out in collaboration with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Social Security Organisation through the Komuniti Sihat Pembina Negara (Kospen) Community and Kospen WOW (Wellness of Workers) programmes," he said in a written parliamentary reply. He added that as of July, a total of 192,862 individuals have been screened under the Kospen programmes. Dzulkefly was responding to a question from Mohd Misbahul Munir Masduki (PN-Parit Buntar), who had asked about strategies to address low awareness and late detection of diabetes, including early detection approaches at the community level. He was also asked about intervention measures to ensure that at-risk populations have systematic access to early screening, given the increasingly alarming prevalence of diabetes in several states. Dzulkefly said the government has planned and implemented various strategies to tackle the issue. This includes adopting a whole-of-nation approach under the Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat (ANMS) to strengthen health promotion and the control of NCDs, including diabetes. Among the initiatives under ANMS are the Kospen programmes, where the community health agent concept, MyChampion, trained by the Health Ministry, is used to deliver health messages encompassing behavioural change interventions to encourage early disease detection. This also includes providing health screening services via 16 mobile units, known as Wellness on Wheels (WOW), nationwide, and implementing weight management programmes at 33 wellness hubs to address NCD risk factors among targeted communities. Meanwhile, the ministry also promotes a sense of "ownership" of one's health among civil servants through the Putrajaya Sihat Sejahtera 2024-2030 initiative, which involves 26 ministries in Putrajaya and aims to strengthen self-healthcare practices. This includes the continuous implementation of health advocacy activities involving clinical experts, public health specialists, and influencers. "Health messages are disseminated through various communication channels, including mass media and digital platforms such as social media, to ensure wide coverage and effective delivery of information to all levels of society," he said.

MIRI (June 21): The Open Air Market in Bekenu is set for a major transformation, as the building undergoes upgrading works to become the new Wellness Hub Sibuti, a flagship community health initiative by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH). The project, which began on June 5, involves extensive repair and renovation works costing RM977,804, and is expected to be completed within 24 weeks, by Nov 20 this year. Once completed, the facility will provide integrated and comprehensive health and wellness services to the local community, read a press statement by the Miri Divisional Health Office today. This initiative aligns with MOH's shift from a traditional 'Sick Care' approach to a proactive 'Health Care' mode, aimed at empowering individuals to take ownership of their health, as well as that of their families and communities. The initiative also supports Thrust 2 of the National Agenda for a Healthy Malaysia (ANMS), focusing on the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and high cholesterol. The upgraded facility will be equipped with modern and eco-friendly features, including consultation rooms, a multimedia studio, meeting rooms, a wellness studio, gymnasium, gallery space, and administrative offices. Services to be offered include health risk assessments, stop-smoking programmes, weight management through the IFitEr (I Fit and Eat Right) programme, lifestyle counselling, and health education. The hub is designed to cater to a wide segment of the community, including teenagers, housewives, senior citizens, and the working population, promoting behavioural changes toward healthier living through skill-building and community engagement. The project is being carried out by Indah Suria Enterprise. Meanwhile, a project site visit and briefing session was recently held with the project contractor. The session was attended by Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia, Dato Lukanisman Awang Sauni; Miri Divisional Health Officer, Dr P Raviwharmman A/L Packierisamy and officers from the Ministry of Health Malaysia as well as the Miri Divisional Health Office. One of the top five infectious diseases for smokers in Penang

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Tuberculosis, or TB, remains among the top five most reported infectious diseases in Penang, with heavy smokers and the elderly, particularly men, identified as high-risk groups. State Health deputy director (Public Health Division) Dr Rozaini Mat Shah said they are more susceptible to the infection due to a weakened immune system and the harmful effects of smoking on the respiratory system. 'Based on last year's observations, most TB cases involved senior citizens (aged 60 and above), primarily men, particularly Malay men. 'Through the data obtained, we identified several high-risk groups, and public health efforts and interventions will be more focused on these groups,' she told reporters after officiating the state-level World TB Day celebration and the Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat (ANMS) Roadshow for Seberang Perai Tengah 2025, here today. Dr Rozaini said that according to last year's statistics, 1,273 new and recurring TB cases were reported in Penang, compared to 1,303 cases in 2023, with 125 deaths recorded, down from 156 the previous year. She said despite a 2.3 per cent decrease, TB remains the state's top five infectious diseases, which include dengue fever, food poisoning, and hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). According to her, the Penang State Health Department will consistently intensify TB-related health education programmes. Dr Rozaini urged the public to lead a healthy lifestyle as a preventive measure against diseases. She said World Tuberculosis Day, observed on March 24, aims to raise public awareness about tuberculosis and its prevention.
